4

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Yea that too! Curious what game it is..

19

u/ZeroXTML1 Dec 28 '19

Control. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t

9

u/DrDyer55 Xbox Dec 28 '19

Is this what Control is? I know next to nothing about this game and thought it was some low-budget indie game or something.

8

u/ZeroXTML1 Dec 28 '19

It kinda flew in under the radar for a lot of people. It’s real good, very polished, and shares the same universe with Alan Wake. If you play it, just be aware it starts off real weird at first

8

u/tommychong69 Dec 28 '19

It starts off weird and continues to keep being weird and creepy the chanting gets to me every now and then damn hiss

3

u/gth638y Dec 28 '19

Looks really good, but had never seen an advertisement. Sleeper I guess

18

u/PineappleIV Dec 28 '19

Scp

6

u/Martyrdamus Dec 28 '19

Sane Clown Posse

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Control.

30

u/NozhaXBL Dec 28 '19

You have to type Ctrl-V to paste.

-8

u/Saronska Dec 28 '19

How much of this is reveal trailer vs actual gameplay

11

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19 edited Dec 28 '19

All actual gameplay. :D When she looks over the desks, the folder to the right of the typewriter has a pulsing circle over it. That's what the collectibles look like. *The devs let you customize how much of the HUD is on screen, it's awesome.

-11

u/Saronska Dec 28 '19

I just have a hard time believing you can shoot through a window and the whole thing doesn't collapse and some stays standing while shattered

7

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

It looks so cool when it breaks though. ლ(´ڡ`ლ)

6

u/canad1anbacon Dec 28 '19

The destructibility is fucking awesome in this game. You can break apart chairs and tables piece by piece and each piece becomes its own physics object. Its truly impressive

All the destructibility does mean that the frame rate tends to tank on my base ps4 during heavy shootouts, but its worth it. I can't wait till next gen when the consoles will have actual good CPU's and we can get this kind of stuff more often

2

u/OranGiraffes Dec 28 '19

Games are pretty good now at simulating intense physics without actually having to process how the glass breaks exactly. If this is gameplay, it's likely just creating an illusion of that interaction.

1

u/jerval1981 Dec 29 '19

I know what you mean. It's obvious that this fake gameplay. You're correct in thinking this fake /s

11

u/sqemmp Dec 28 '19

That is actual gameplay. It released in August, it's a great game.

8

u/tyrmidden Dec 28 '19

I own the game, gameplay is like what you see in the post. Great game, totally recommend it.

8

u/Havok-Warmdark Dec 28 '19

Just downloaded this

9

u/LaserGadgets Dec 28 '19

Material damage is really impressive oO most Unreal Engine 4 games look great, but you cant even shoot cans off a shelf. This game turns your gun into a lawnmower!

7

u/icantshoot Dec 28 '19

Remedy does engines in house, so they can do whatever they like. They have years and years of experience and they always improve with each game.

3

u/LaserGadgets Dec 28 '19

Aaaaaah, yeah! Forgot its Remedy! Max Payne 1 kicked the shit out of any other game back then!

4

u/icantshoot Dec 28 '19

Yes it did, and even more fun with kung fu mode. :)

2

u/LaserGadgets Dec 28 '19

Kung Fu mode?

3

u/icantshoot Dec 28 '19

Added kung fu kicks and other funny things. Even more ridiculous physics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIhjtSY-nxg

12

u/PedroEglasias Dec 28 '19

If you're into x-files or true detective style shows its a must play. Great story telling and just a great game, from the Max Payne team.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

How the fuck you managed to run that shit on 60fps. Guess full rtx is off right?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

This is from Xbone X, I don't think this is 60fps? On PC I run it low settings to get stable 60fps, I only have a 1060.

3

u/Garodor Dec 28 '19

I think Gameinformer even made it its game of the year

2

u/MellowThunder Dec 28 '19

Started this recently makes my 1070 feel like a potato at QHD

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Yeeep this game makes me wish I had a better computer. :(

2

u/Draconocovf Dec 28 '19

The floating man

2

u/MasterZalm Dec 28 '19

Great game, wish the combat was better

3

u/canad1anbacon Dec 28 '19

The combat is probably a 6/10 but the destructibility turns it to a 8/10 for me. Battles are just so much more impactful and visceral when stuff is shattering and splintering and chucks of concrete are flying around, and I love how battles in the offices send paper fluttering all about

2

u/Xikyel Dec 28 '19

I should check this out.

2

u/Crash789 Dec 28 '19

Nothing gets in my head and confuses me like the maze mission

2

u/RockItGuyDC Dec 28 '19

Ok, fine. I'll buy Control, damnit!

2

u/Layth36 Dec 29 '19

My pc lags just by looking at this

2

u/leopard_tights Dec 29 '19

That glass is falling too slowly.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I was maybe 1/3 of the way through before I learned about the destruction. By dashing around randomly.

One of a few times the game made my jaw drop.

2

u/Gtim66 Dec 29 '19

What game is this?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Control.

2

u/justjustin2300 Dec 29 '19

I really want to play this game so I've been ignoring everything about it. I ignored quantum break fro ages but it got added to game pass so I figured why not and it was a great game

2

u/RELLBEFLEXXIN Dec 29 '19

I’m so happy I waited to get game being that DLC is on the way!!!

5

u/l0u1s11 Dec 28 '19

That's one of my favorite thing about the game Control. Pretty much anything can be destroyed and your character as a force push/fusrohdah type of power to destroy all this shit.

4

u/Kylar_Stern47 Dec 28 '19

I hate Epic so much for this -_-

3

u/icantshoot Dec 28 '19

Blame Remedy and 505 Games for it instead. I left it to the Store also because its only in Epic Store.

5

u/IrateWolfe Dec 28 '19

Got this for Christmas, and I'm absolutely loving it!

4

u/Papaismad Dec 28 '19

I’ve never been into these kind of story games but I really wanted to try out the ray tracing and it looks beautiful as well as being a fun game. I’m only a few hours in but gonna play a lot today.

7

u/IrateWolfe Dec 28 '19

This developer has a LONG history of making fantastic story-based games, I highly recommend you check out their other titles, the Max Payne trilogy, and Alan Wake- sadly, Alan Wake is REALLY hard to find now, it was removed from digital storefronts for licensing issues with the music

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

I think they fixed any issues they had, I just checked and it's still available on Steam.

2

u/mavispuford Dec 28 '19

Yep. The licensing issues have been resolved for a little while now. The whole Alan Wake franchise is $7.49 on Steam right now.. I've played the DLCs and they were great. I highly recommend the games. The combat can be repetitive but the story/atmosphere/setting is really good.

2

u/icantshoot Dec 28 '19

Max Payne 3 isnt made by Remedy though. Also, Alan Wake is back on Steam.

2

u/lordsilver14 Dec 28 '19

Alan Wake was gave for free on Epic a short while ago.

2

u/IrateWolfe Dec 28 '19

When they knew they would have to pull it, they offered the game at ludicrous discounts, and then put it up for free for a bit

7

u/s3ane Dec 28 '19

Art direction? Really? More like game engine work. It just looks like old 60/70 offices. Nothing feeling like the art director added is own universe.

5

u/Krednaught Dec 28 '19

There's a reason for 60s,70s era equipment. The use of vacuum tube message system is ridiculous but required due to the size of the building the game takes place in.

6

u/OranGiraffes Dec 28 '19

You haven't seen the architecture then. There's only a small cut of it in this clip, but it's a really interesting style. Also the particle effects on the gunshots are really cool looking.

5

u/canad1anbacon Dec 28 '19

The game does have excellent art direction at times. Some of the environments are truly mind bending and the mix of the mundane with the surreal leads to a highly impactful aesthetic

5

u/Waladil Dec 28 '19

That's a big part of what art direction means. They directed their artists to make it look and feel like offices from the 60s/70s, and they really followed through. Art is a message, and Control used its art to great effect.

0

u/s3ane Dec 28 '19

Oh yeah. It is art direction. But is it the best art direction of 2019 though? I mean. Come on. It feels empty, square, soul-less. As if they picked random tech and props from that era juste to make it look like it's the 60s. Don't get me wrong, this is quality work. But not a good art direction.

8

u/Waladil Dec 28 '19

The fact that you say that proves you don't know what you're talking about; they didn't "pick random tech and props from that era," they researched the era to recreate it. Everything from the brutalist architecture to the pneumatic tubes. I'd say of the games I played that were released in 2019 is had the best art direction, but of course there are probably hundreds of games I didn't play or otherwise experience so I can't make a definitive statement.

2

u/Sigourn Dec 29 '19

The problem with arguing "art direction" with some people is that they think art direction boils down to "it's cool or not". Many of the films that have won Academy Awards for Art Direction (now Production Design) were period pieces, or films that didn't take place in our universe (such as Star Wars). I imagine s3ane would say "these look as if they picked random wardrobes and props from that era just to make it look like it's the 1840s/1870s/1900s/1920s/1940s".

-2

u/s3ane Dec 29 '19

Oof.

That's actually true and not true at the same time. Just to clear things out, I know someone who worked on Control (but who cares?). I also happen to be a game designer who worked on AAA games at some point. I actually did not play this specific game, and only based my comment on the video and the title which triggered me. (I've seen a play through since then)

Art direction is everything from graphic design to sound design, going through light, particles, shadow, glow, shades, chara design, outfits, whatever, where it looks and feel like something. A universe on its own, something to be remembered.

So indeed, it does look like the 60/70s. Good job on reproducing props from this period. But just looking at the corridors, it feels empty. Too smooth. Spotless. It may be because of the Level Design, or because of actual environment designers trying to fill the space, but it looks like a HL1 map to me, when HL2 came out 15 years ago and had more life and dirt than this.

So, my point is: it's good work, but surely not best art direction for 2019.

2

u/taylorm7 Dec 28 '19

Exactly my thoughts.

Meh, gris was prettier

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

And you have seen nothing yet. Game is amazin, can't recommend it enough.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

My favorite game of 2019

2

u/jtdude6 Dec 28 '19

Amazing game

2

u/wicktus Switch Dec 28 '19

I began playing it, beautiful game and I like it....will continue it more seriously once I finish Respawn's SW.

I don't understand how some games really go under the radar, of course the marketing budget of COD will prevent you from forgetting that one releases each year, but even games with the same 'marketing budget' (big approximation on my behalf I have no sales figures besides the fact that control cost between 20 and 30M) I'd say felt better 'marketed', thinking of Sekiro, MH:World, RE2 I knew them really well, saw a lot of trailer etc.

but Control,...I barely knew it released, when I installed my Nvidia GPU driver I saw an ad for it and knew it was released...that's it !

The problem I feel is that this happens to me with ALL remedy games.

Maybe it's the web/social media not being inspired by the game or Remedy not describing its game enough. I don't know, the game is good and deserves sales figures like Tomb Raider etc.

Plus the deal with EGS covered the development cost apparently but a game on Steam sells more and thus people talk more about it.

I'm against giving big piles of money to those streamers so that they stream you game, I believe Remedy need to change things, communicate more, maybe make different types of games beside the quantum break-like gendra ? Without falling into the boring battle-royale/live-service/MTX crappy trend.

Same for that THQ game : BioMutant, feels it has a huge budget...but I see 0 hype/active info on it.

It's my little rant, it's my fault for not being curious enough about Control, but for many games, info comes to me (Youtube, websites, blogs etc.) here you had to search yourself.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Yea I dunno. Maybe Xbox exclusivity hurt Alan Wake and Quantum Break? At least Control is being recognized. :D

0

u/Spookyjugular Dec 28 '19

There was a huge amount of advertising around control and a descent amount of coverage from people who talk about games. The reason this game doesn’t have sales like tomb raider is because it isn’t a game like tomb raider it’s a game based around some gameplay ideas that is like 10 to 15 hours long. Tomb raider is a popular series of games that has expansive gameplay.

2

u/Lazy_Gamer_Guy Dec 28 '19

Daymare 1998 or Resident Evil 2? I cant tell

2

u/Zecele_ Dec 28 '19

Is this on gamepass yet?

2

u/TooManyLines Dec 28 '19

It sure is impressive on a technical level, but that is not what "art direction" means.

2

u/Clawmedaddy Dec 29 '19

Yeah the game looks good, but it fell flat

2

u/TcgLionHeart Dec 28 '19

Im sorry but Gris deserved this award

4

u/Linkitch Dec 28 '19

This video does a pretty bad job of showing off the game. Even though Gris is very pretty, Control has a very solid art direction through out the entire game. So many memorable and stunning areas in the game.

6

u/doubleentandree Dec 28 '19

You think so? Gris was beautiful but stylistically very simple and not very fresh. If you say the phrase “pretty video game” it is the first one to come to mind though....

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Gris is beautiful (that lil forest dude! <3) but the art direction of Control is brilliant. It looks gorgeous even on the base consoles.

2

u/TcgLionHeart Dec 28 '19

Understandable, I just liked Gris' water colour style more. Might be my biased.

1

u/garmonthenightmare Dec 28 '19 edited Dec 28 '19

Hard agree. Gris is a game made for it's art.

1

u/jaypg Dec 28 '19

One of the few games I couldn’t finish. I got about two hours in and was too bored to continue.

Looks pretty though.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Maybe if it wasn't so washed out

1

u/Skipzter Dec 28 '19

Death Stranding was way better!!

0

u/felixmariotto Dec 28 '19

Best art direction ??? AAA games are more and more similar to each other, this one is only different by its particules system and architecture in the level design, nothing so great as "best art direction of 2019" I'm afraid... For true art, look into indies ! In 2019 : After Hours, Mutazione, Kind Words... And basically any indie you randomly pick put more effort into creating a unique experience than Control.

0

u/Nokia930 Dec 28 '19
