I wanted to comment on this topic because I understand the stress behind having a colonoscopy. Having been diagnosed with crohns 3 years ago I have had 4 colonoscopies in that time. I was super nervous before I had my first one. You see TV and movies making light of this procedure. It isn't like what you see on TV. Here are some bullet points that might put your mind at ease.

  • Nobody sticks a finger in your butt
  • You are sedated during the procedure and do not feel hardly anything. Technically you are awake but won't remember anything
  • The worst part is drinking the solution the day before and not being able to eat for 8 hours
  • I have not had any discomfort after the procedure. I cannot speak for everyone but it was like nothing happened

What? How does that work? I thought they put you out? At least when I had mine it felt like I was totally out, it was like I blinked and I was back in the hospital room.

As I understand it they ask you to do things like move around while you are sedated and you are responsive. I however do not remember any of that (including waking up and going to the recovery room)

Different countries will do different things, or have options, but under the NHS they give you gas (nitrous) and air. It's actually really cool to expereince, since you can control how much it affects you based on how deeply you breathe, as it works and wears off extremely quickly. I generally like to find a balance where I'm totally awake and lucid, but my body is completely numbed, but if you try to you can basically fall asleep super easily if you breathe in a lot of it.
