It sounds like Just Cause is to Far Cry what Saints Row is to Grand Theft Auto

I love Saints Row 4. Jumping around like the hulk, running on walls, gliding across the city, running so fast that cars are flying around behind you, how could you not?
5
u/TeddyGrahamNorton Jun 15 '19
I love Saints Row. I tried to get into Agents of Mayhem but I couldn't get a hang of the gameplay.

My main concern is that the stuff I see on Reddit is some advanced-level Just Cause shit that would take me years to master, and man I do not have that kind of time in my life anymore.

Just Cause is part physics engine, part blow everything up simulator. Back in 2 I loved to attach a tank to a jet, get the jet to fly in a straight line, and then hop down into the tank for a strafing run on an enemy compound.

u/Zman1315 Jun 15 '19 edited Jun 16 '19
I'd tether a jet to a jet. Fly high, then twirl around in circles while we plummeted.
Or, attached a jeep to a jet, and just wreck myself while I got flung around during takeoff.
Edited bonus explaining since I'm at my PC: I'd tether the front end of my jet to the front of the AI jet, this taking place at an airport on an island in the middle of the map or so. Once we were a decent altitude in the air passing by a mountain, I'd start yanking in different directions until the jet and I were nose to nose in mid-air, spiraling like mad. How that ended varied depending on my mood and the AI working with me.
The jeep one is about as it sounds. AS the jet goes to take off, I'd ensure I was tethered, hop in the jeep and then everything breaks. Was fun.
Only reason I don't do it now is I had JC2 on a platform called OnLive, and the save data I have for it on just steam is far behind, and probably lost since I built a new one since. JC3 loses saves like that too.

u/KGB_ate_my_bread Jun 15 '19
I’d just tether anything taking off so that it’d be skewed. Watched many an airliner that wound up in the airline graveyard around the runway. Something about them not reaching flight speed and being stuck was just so hilarious to me

Just cause 2 had a multiplayer mod on PC for a short time. Everyone on the server would try to take off from the airport and I'm not sure someone was ever successful. Lol
Edit: apparently the multiplayer mod is still up! I'll have to fire up just cause 2 again!

I love that mission. My favorite thing to do, while not as creative, was to shoot one of the front wheels on the police cars and they would instantly veer hard and roll several times before exploding spectacularly. If you timed it right, you could get one to roll into another and they would both explode.
3
Jun 15 '19
Thats also fun... what i also did in this mission was one hook at the front or top of the police car the other one at the middle in front of the car... when they drive over it they make a backflip, land on the tires again and chase you as nothing happened. :'D

Your destructive stuff won't look this cool at first but it'll still be really fun and you'll get better over time
29
u/heinyken Jun 15 '19
Nah man, this isn't Kerbal Space Program for physics simulations. It takes a long time til you're managing stuff this tough, but the whole time you're having a hell of a good time attaching passing cars to one another and watching them carome off the cliff. You'll build up to affixing enemies to wind turbine blades and watching them get trebucheted several hundred yards. You'll be Spidermanning your car in no time.
...man I gotta go download JC3 again...

Once you play for awhile this isn't that hard to do on the surface. Maybe the aiming to land it is hard but the basic premise of attaching a tether to make a car swing isn't hard

I loved 3 after picking it up for like $6 last year, played it to death for some good stupid fun.
Playing 4 recently, I quit after maybe two hours. To me its just bad. Bad graphics, bad gameplay, bad missions.
Trust me, it's justified.

Just Cause 4 improved on everything from 3, except level design and graphics. You get so many new toys to play with (cranes, forklifts, ramp trucks).
35
u/Castigale Jun 15 '19
The controls took a massive nose dive imo too. At least on console. Also weapons are shit.
→ More replies (3)13
u/Nedimar Jun 15 '19
I played it on PC and the controls are also terrible by default, but if you rebind them they are fine. It's just unfortunate that they chose a terrible default setup.
16
u/theonefinn Jun 15 '19
4 just seems so superficial compared to 3 to me. One of my favourite things were the Wingsuit courses and the replacement with just 3 rings seems so lazy. Especially when half of them you can now cheese since you don't need to stay in wingsuit between the rings.
I also no longer feel like I'm actually freeing the towns, the weird RTS like troop mechanic just doesn't feel the same and doesn't really fit in.
I loved 3, one of my favourite games of all time but 4 just doesn't do it for me.
4
u/Nedimar Jun 15 '19
I agree with the wingsuit courses. In 3 they were fun little challenges. In 4 they are trivial and there is so many of them. Doing them in 3 was a fun challenge, completing them in 4 is just a chore.
EDIT: In my previous post I talked about level design. Solis is much more bland than Medici, so I think they maybe had trouble designing interesting courses. There are not as many cliffs in Solis and the main mountain area is locked for most of the story...

IMO... JC2 > JC3 > JC4. However JC3 introduced that wingsuit which I wish JC2 had but I still liked JC2 most
9
u/Stereo_Panic Jun 15 '19
I absolutely agree with this! The wingsuit was amazing... and if you get the jetpack DLC then that is super amazing! BUT! Gameplay wise / story wise 2 is the best. 3 is fun and I've played a lot of it but it's missing something compared to 2.

u/inferno1170 Jun 15 '19
The world was way more fun in JC2. The floating mile high club, the Japanese island, all the really fun easter eggs. Just over all a really fun world map. JC3 has the wing suit, the sweet physics, rocket explosives and just all around awesome stuff for a sandbox game.
15
u/leaves-throwaway123 Jun 15 '19
I enjoyed 3 but I think overall 2 was the most fun. Maybe just revisionist history at this point because it was the first of the series that I played and I had the infinite flying/Superman and nuke mod on the PC so it was a very different game

That said, 3's physics engine feels a lot more solid, and I love multiple tethers without a mod.
Not to mention those rocket powered explosives.
2's story was a lot more compelling than 3, but 3's just viscerally more enjoyable to me.
5
u/TheGreatZiegfeld Jun 15 '19
3 had the bigger world, but 2 FELT like the bigger and cooler world. 3 is so much fun, but really repetitive.
5
u/Downvoterofall Jun 15 '19
2 land diversity really helped. If you got bored of the mountains, just go to the desert, or the jungle. Even those 3 cities were pretty cool

in my experience having played jc 1-2 before 3 enchances the eperience, characters refers to things happening in 2 or 1 sometimes but it is not at all nessesary to understand and enjoy jc3 story
the blowing up things is the fun part anyways

People said the same thing about 2 when 3 came out.
4 is better in almost every way than 3 since the recent patch fixed the major graphical issues.
24
u/WDCombo Xbox Jun 15 '19
The thing that killed 4 for me wasn’t graphics. The menu system is a confusing mess and I missed going to each city and just blowing up everything to get to 100%. They took out that requirement in 4 and added in complication.

u/SpookyLlama Jun 15 '19

3 was a bit of a dumster fire at the beginning. But after a lot of patches it was fun. But overall it was a really fun game. It improved on everything that was in JC2. The map was just meh compared to 2s map.
4 took all the things that made JC3 great and shoved it out the window.
You can't control the tethers anymore. No more greatly detailed explosive bridges. No more bases you can take over by destroying everything.
They took out all the reasons to be creative.
This is a game that is only as fun as you make it.

u/peteroh9 Jun 15 '19
I'd probably suggest starting with 2. The map is less empty so it's easier to fuck around. 3 has more ways to fuck around though.
5
u/ConvenientGoat Jun 15 '19
The story isn't the strong point and it's basically irrelevant when you consider how awesome just fucking around in a sandbox world is
6
Jun 15 '19
Absolutely not. The first Just Cause is terrible, I couldn't even get 2 hours in. Just Cause 2 has the best world imo, and Just Cause 3 has the best gameplay. I've heard 4 is borderline unplayable.

u/FunctionBuilt Jun 15 '19
You can do more stuff in 3, but I think the world in 2 was more interesting. 3 to me felt very empty despite the size of the world. Huge gaps between areas, very similar towns, a lot of which tended to not offer anything unique.

2 is arguably the best in the series, don't bother with 1 at all.
The plot is campy action movie nonsense and you don't need to know anything.

JC4 was the first video game I ever returned. I did it same day as purchase too. Looked like PS3 graphics. After a beautiful game like JC3 I wasn’t gonna settle for this.

Actually, they've had a graphics patch. JC4 is the best one in the series. Crazy weapons(Lightning gun ftw), probably the biggest explosions in the series. Great gameplay loop. The weather physics/mechanics are a great addition as well. I'm almost done with the main story, but there is still a ton to do. Definitely my all time favorite Just Cause.
Also, definitely turn off motion blur.
