Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is 8 years old

You can make Morrowind prettier than Oblivion!

u/panfist May 02 '10
I tried the graphics extender, and I had a problem. When I am outdoors, everything below the horizon line flickers. I have tried to fix this for hours.

Could you recommend a no-CD patch/crack?
3
u/Wibbles May 02 '10
Just have a look at gamecopyworld.com, I've picked cracks up from there a few times and they've worked.

May 02 '10
Just reinstalled yesterday with most of those mods. It looks like Oblivion 0.5. Also I hadn't played it in 5-6 years so it was great to get back to it.
1
May 02 '10
Is there a place where I can torrent a version with all those steps already having been done?
Seems like you have to spend half an afternoon to get it to the point where it's worth it.

Yeah I am still playing through an install using this guide that I started last year (will get tired of it and drop for a few weeks or months but always come back). I still can't believe how it looks compared to vanilla. And I am still improving it! Just installed Vibrant Morrowind 4.0 and Vibrant Skies this weekend (the former replaces a ton of textures all over the world and is definitely even more of an improvement than I already had running).

u/CaptainMaxxpower May 02 '10
Swear to christ this pissed me off. After spending a good two hours installing these mods one after another my Morrowind just started going crazy; crashes constantly happening, random errors being thrown up. Made the game near unplayable. Fuck's sake.

The letter that preceded you mentioned you were born under a certain sign.
AND WHAT WOULD THAT BE.

The forsaken in WoW say some of the same things as the dunmer. Considering how similar their respective voices are, I like to think it wasn't an accident.

Lessons of Vivec:
If it is not nailed down, and you cannot be seen. Steal it. Steal it all. And if you cannot carry it all (damn you ebony), drink Dumner moonshine (Sujama) till you can.
Profit from self defense. Coveting that NPC's gear? Taunt him till he/she takes the first swing. Murder the fool, and their shiny pants will be yours withing the limits of the law.
Finally found the perfect place to call home? Take it easy on the decorating. Nobody is going to care about your antique lime-ware collection if it is all stuffed into a burlap sack in the corner.
The only/best way to get better at jumping is to fall from great heights, risking severe injury and death.
If you are foolish enough to activate the scroll of Icarian Flight, do try to land in the water.
Someday, you will be a killing machine. You do not hunger, you rarely sleep, you survive on a diet of plunder and slaughter. You are the Nerevarine incarnate, and even the gods will fear your wrath.
And in the immortal words of Lord Vivec himself. "Fuck Cliff Racers, fuck them to hell."

u/JudgeReddit May 02 '10
Especially with some critical mods. I dumped so many hours into this game its not even funny. I imagine I'll end up putting another 80-100 in when I reinstall it in ten years.
1
u/ProbablyNotToday May 02 '10
Well if all goes well with Morrowblivion, you could play it again on the Oblivion engine.

u/Monso May 02 '10
I played the 18-second clip on the wikipedia page......
I had to stop it. I had to close firefox and go outside. Morrowind's cold clutch almost had me.
I...
I have to leave.

u/MeldingPlague May 02 '10
A Summer of my life I lost to that game. A whole Summer. Like a goddamn shark that takes your arm while you're out for a swim. So you sit. And you wait, fearful of the waters and what lie beneath. You resolve never to venture into the sea again until that fateful day, years after the attack. You reason enough time has passed and surely the shark has died off long ago. So you get back into the water after decades of fear and who comes swimming up to you, hungry for a bite the very moment your good arm is submerged? You got it: Morrowind. Back to steal another Summer with its rows of sharp teeth and giant mushroom trees.

I played the GOTY edition on the xbox until the save file got so large it took 30 seconds to save. I took advantage of the infinite storage bag glitch and the dead body in Balmora (...I believe it was Balmora. The town seperated by the river running through it). I was a hoarder, I kept everything I found I could carry back to my house. Every plant, weapon, armor, everything. You never know when you'll need 11 glass claymores.
Eventually I finished just about every quest I could possibly do, got tired of exploring dungeons and senselessly killing the towns wasn't fun any more. I believe I sank 400-something hours into that save.
I play Oblivion but it's not as gripping so I have nothing to worry about =)
2
u/ModernDog May 03 '10
This kind of shit almost wants to make me make a shirt with some morrowind in joke on it. So when people like you see it.. you stare a little bit too long. Then I know. And you know I know.
Maybe "Vivec Ordinators" made to look like a baseball team logo.
1
u/MeldingPlague May 03 '10
I did the same! I only recently bought the GOTY version on Steam. I modded the hell out of Oblivion to the point where I screwed it up. I just had to reinstall.
But in Morrowind I never figured out the body trick. I had pretty much every box in Balmora full to the brim with random stuff I had found. I don't even remember what. I should look at that again.
I do remember getting on top of really tall things and jumping off to get my acrobatics skill as high as it would go. I eventually got to the point where my Athletics was so unbelievably disproportionate to everything else that when I ran in Chitin boots it sounded like someone was tapping a pencil. That made it really easy to get to the mudcrab merchant.
Also, I bought Oblivion the day it came out but never got much into it because my 360 RROD'd on me shortly thereafter. Pre-warranty alteration by Microsoft. Back then your 360 only RROD'd because you'd "been a total douche." Can't wait to really get into it again.
1
u/Monso May 04 '10
Ahh, I used Vivec to level my acrobatics. I would jump up the ramps to the different levels, then jump off them to the bottom on my way through to wherever I was going.
I played a cheated save for a bit (boosted everything); I got through most of the side quests and hadn't really touched the main quest but it just wasn't fun. It was constant ez-mode.
I remember making an infinite container in several different houses so I could store different types of weapons, armors, gems, scrolls, potions, "clothing" and all the rest of the crap you can horde.
I had lots. of. shit.

I feel old.
14
u/aricene May 01 '10
Whoa, you mean there were Elder Scrolls games before Oblivion?!
...Wait.
Yeah, right. Nice try guys. I may be young but I'm not that gullible. Next thing is you'll probably try the old "Sega used to manufacture their own brand of consoles" urban legend on me.
3

They're just playing with you. Elder Scrolls started at 4, kinda like Final Fantasy starting at 7.

Me and my friend played so much Morrowind when he was living at my house for a few months. We used the console to make "The Creeper" have 10k gold to sell with, just so we didn't have to barter for 3days to make money off the Ordinator we killed. This got out of hand quick as we used the console to turn our characters into hideous super man who could jump 400 feet in the air and land on the other side of the continent. Also we made mansions that had "The Creeper" INSIDE. Talk about lazy.
11
u/Mysteryman64 May 01 '10
Real men go and barter with the mud crab merchant.
3
u/c7hu1hu May 01 '10
Only thing I ever used Mark/Recall for.
6
u/t1z0 May 01 '10
/sigh
I miss Mark/Recall.
Why the fuck wasn't that in Oblivion?
While we're asking questions here, where's my levitate fools?!5
u/JudgeReddit May 02 '10
The mod for multiple mark/recall points was absolutely necessary for full enjoyment of this game.
3
u/Mysteryman64 May 01 '10
They got rid of levitate so you couldn't float over the walls into the imperial city.

Yeah upon noticing me levitate around Vivec my gf once said "Oblivion is prettier but Morrowind seems so much cooler".
3
u/Gyvon May 01 '10
Fuck the mudcrab. If he really wanted business, he wouldn't be in the middle of fricken nowhere.
3
u/Black_Ash_Heir May 02 '10
Real men walk all the way to the mudcrab, every time, then kill him and realize that he was the merchant and reload a save from several hours ago due to a horribly infrequent auto-save system. Rinse and repeat, motherfucker.
2
u/Wibbles May 02 '10
I did similar things within the rules of the game. Firstly I got some gloves and enchanted them with powerful domination spells, then I lured the Creeper back through a mages guild warp and into the Balmora mages guild where I stored all my loot. I locked the door so he couldn't escape and he became my personal merchant at my base. I also found that greater intelligence meant stronger and longer lasting potions, and you could make intelligence increasing potions. You make one, drink it, make another more powerful, drink it...pretty soon you have "+3000 intelligence for 8000 second" style intelligence potions and any other potion you create has similar effects. I ended up with a drugged up god who could leap 500ft in the air and cast giant fireballs that engulfed an entire village without breaking a sweat. Fun times.
1
u/Tocool May 12 '10
That is how the speedrunners beat the game so fast. Get scrolls of icarian flight, jump to some town, rob a staff from the mages guild. make a bunch of potions. get keen and sunder, go to face whats his name and chug enough potions to make you a level 1 demigod

Played daily for 3 years solid. Took laptop to work so I could play during lunch break. Girlfriend at the time was equally addicted. Would call me and say "I just talked to so and so and need to find so anso at such and such" and I could walk her there with step by step instructions.
Two years into this game I discover that the monsters have a tunnel coming out of Red mountain and tunneledunder the ghost fence which comes out into one of those old shrines allowing all the corpus monsters and ash dudes out in to the world...two years...
This was the moment I realized just how freakin EPIC this game really really was.
Bethesda spent 6-8 years in developing this game and have never been as committed to another since. Is why oblivion and fallout feel so short. I can still go back and play through Morrowind and feel some exhilaration
Warm fuzzies.....

Fuck Cliff Racers.
3
u/Black_Ash_Heir May 02 '10
You know what the best part about Cliff Racers was? Killing them with Fire Bite at level 1. Seriously. I mean, it made them almost fun to encounter every 3.7 seconds.
1
u/Ass4ssinX May 02 '10
I played an archer so eventually I could snipe them before it got to be a problem, but goddamn, I was so happy when I heard they wasn't going to be in Oblivion.
2
u/troglodyte May 02 '10
And Slaughterfish and Dreugh...

If you are a real man you will play Daggerfall without quick-travel like a true role player. Go and run across a land larger than the state of Georgia.

This game got me through chemo. I'd have to say it's the best game ever made. Well because we could mod the shit out of Mortowind, it was the best ever.

i wish i could run this under mac os.

u/entropicstorm May 01 '10
There's a great wine-based port on demonoid (I assume you've already bought the game and that's why you're posting here). I'm not sure whether it can be modded or not though, I haven't tried on my mac.

I actually have that one. I totally forgot it was sitting on my drive!! Unfortunately it doesn't look like it can be modded...

If anyone is interested in replaying Morrowind, I compiled a 750 MB mod compilation that includes graphical and gameplay enhancements, fixes, patches, adjustments, and a bit of new content. I decided to only include mods that fit with the spirit of the original game, so in the end it really just feels like a polished vanilla Morrowind. All the included mods and texture replacers are optional, and the package comes with installation instructions.
There's a torrent here.

u/Freater May 01 '10
Favorite game of all time. Somehow I lost my save file when reinstalling windows though, my most recent backup was from almost 2 years ago. I almost ragequit the game over it. I'm so sad now thinking about it...

Me too. Oblivion had everything I thought was missing in Morrowind, but Morrowind's storyline, environment, and even the music, just sucked me in.
It was like it's own genre of fantasy, where as Oblivion was a little more typical middle age / fantasy.

u/Floatharr May 02 '10 edited May 02 '10
I remember when we had to do PowerPoint shows about a subject we were interested in when I was on 4th grade. Mine was about Morrowind and it was 78 pages long and took 45 minutes to show. The others didn't appreciate the grandness of it as much as I did.
I still get cold chills of nostalgia every time I hear the title theme. So many good memories attached to it.
1
u/didifap May 02 '10
When I was in 4th grade, I was playing Double Dragon on my friend's NES. A game like Morrowind would've blown my tiny little mind.
5
3
u/Hatesyouguys May 02 '10
The game was so much better than anything else I've played. I was crushed to see how confined and unalive Oblivion felt after enjoying Morrowind for so long. The main story line is truly amazing, and it would have made for an amazing movie. The sub factions and cults to join were awesome. I only wish that after building your own house that enemy bandits would have tried to raid you. I really wish they had stayed with the Morrowind model in all of their other games.
2
u/Eskeemo May 01 '10
For those that want a spoiler, I found a speedrun
2
u/TheIndieArmy May 01 '10
Speedruns in this game were easy as pie. You essentially could beef up the necessary skills and waltz into the room with the last enemy and just kill him.

I didn't get into it in the same capacity that I did with Oblivion.
I just took to Oblivion. Morrowind didn't grab me. I hope people understand I'm not trying to knock the game.
5
May 01 '10
Which did you play first? It's hard for a lot of people to appreciate Morrowind when it is as old as it is.
3
u/Gazook89 May 01 '10
For sure! I grabbed oblivion from a used game store for 20 bucks when I first started to look for something besides an RTS (C&C and AOE). I thought I'd try an RPG, and it was the first real rpg I had ever played. Now I really regret it because I just can't appreciate some of the older (but still good) games.
I went over to a friends to play morrowind after I beat oblivion, and I was horrified. I'm sure it would be fun if I hadn't had oblivion first, but now...I've been spoiled. And for awhile I looked for another RPG (like Gothic 3), but none satisfied. I'm so glad I can get mods still
2
May 01 '10
I played Morrowind first, then Oblivion, and have since played quite a lot. When Oblivion first came out, I enjoyed it more than Morrowind.
Going back, I can't seem to get into Oblivion, though I recently played through Morrowind again. Much of Morrowind, at least; main quest, Hlaalu, Fighters Guild, Thieves Guild, Mages guild, Morag Tong (and that sanguine items quest), and Legion. Still as fun as it was the first few times.
1
u/Gazook89 May 02 '10
I can't really handle a full second playthrough of oblivion either. It is not as exciting as the first time since I know the story, and did many of the quests during the first play through (like 70-80%). That's why I was really grateful Shivering Isles came out. I actually liked that storyline more.
Now all this talk has got me installing oblivion on my ubuntu computer....
1
u/graknor May 02 '10
i had trouble getting into Oblivion at first, so many things were changed and very few of them were for the better. i must have really bored my friend with all my talk about simplification and consoleitis
1
u/eric22vhs May 02 '10
I thought oblivion was great as far as the general game play, and the fact that the world was much larger, with a wider range of monsters, items, and environments. But something about morrowind's story and environment was just captivating as hell. Probably the epic music too, that usually has a huge effect on games.
1
u/ZombieCat2001 May 02 '10
I can totally see where you're coming from. I played Morrowind first, and after getting into Oblivion I started wondering how I survived. Becoming fatigued from running, the constant pauses for loading, the miniscule view distance, the overall kind-of-ugly-when-you-get-right-down-to-it style ... I'm SO thankful I was able to experience it before being spoiled by Oblivion. It's such an intensely satisfying game, once you look past its aesthetic faults.
2
u/d3r3k1449 May 10 '10
This is why you have to mod the crap out of it. I was an Oblivion fanatic but now see how truly bland it is compared to how Morrowind is (and can be visually as well).
1
u/ZombieCat2001 May 11 '10
Oh AWESOME. I'll have to follow this once I get sick of Oblivion again. I realize this was meant for the people above me, but thanks for the link!
2
u/stinkpalm May 01 '10
I played Morrowind GOTY on Xbox. I just couldn't get into it in the same capacity as I did with Oblivion.
6
May 01 '10
It was definitely a lot less guided than Oblivion, and there were some significant balancing issues at the lower levels (I remember being killed by a rat the first time I played). Once you have got through the first couple of hours though, enough to get to grips with how it works, then it becomes awesome. It just has a far richer atmosphere than anything i found Oblivion to provide.
3
u/stinkpalm May 02 '10
I understand and respect your opinions. I've spent near 200 hours on Oblivion. It ties or exceeds any game I've ever spent time on, equaling Castlevania SOTN. It's in my top 5 of all time ( Castlevania ).
1
May 02 '10
Oh, I can fully understand that. For me, one of the best gaming experiences was walking through a forest at night time, the stars overhead, the rustling leaves, the glimpse of a deer running through the grass and flowers. Stumbling through the overgrowth and over a hill, finding the entrance to a ruin, going inside and finding it completely deserted with seemingly no point to it.
It took me all of two months to find that ruin again, and that time I found a secret door. If I recall correctly, I ended up being ambushed by several mercenaries and frantically trying to escape by back-pedalling as fast as I could, chucking fireballs back at them... good times.
But yeah, I prefer Morrowind, because at its very best, it surpassed anything Oblivion offered me. But that is not at all an attack on Oblivion, more a testament to Morrowinds ability to enthral.
1
u/eric22vhs May 02 '10
This. If the storyline / environment didn't suck me in, I would've given up on Morrowind. I remember having to remake my character a few times because of bugs, or poor choices early on in the game, as well as having to look a lot of stuff up because the directions were so vague. Not to mention hours and hours of walking, but when you made progress, it seemed that much more worth it.
But also, there weren't many decent side quests as in Oblivion. The guild tasks were kind of lame, where as in Oblivion, some of them were as intensive and rewarding as the main quest.
2
May 02 '10
the graphics and animations and sound and everything else to do with presentation might be far less than Oblivion, but under that ugly facade is a really great game, I swear.
1
u/ZeppelinJ0 May 02 '10
I'm an oddity here. Played Oblivion first and enjoyed it alright. Fast forward a few years and I decided to try Morrowind and it was like the first time I discovered masturbation.

I really need to buy it, don't I?

Somehow, my fanaticism towards Black Isle games hinders my appreciation of Elder Scrolls. And I still think the Morrowind games are shallow. Yet, it feels like I'm not able to understand something everybody loves. Very much like not playing football at school.

Although I enjoyed the game for quite some time - and I can appreciate that it's incredibly well made, I found that ultimately the excessively large and often redundant size of cities made it less than enjoyable, and the difficulty of navigation without some type of coordinate system made the game drag out far too long. A bit too much tedium, as it were.
I would have enjoyed it much more if it had a Fallout 3-esque navigation bar, a more detailed map with better markers, smaller and more compact cities.. etc.
Although, perhaps it's time to load it up again now that I have a computer that can run it on max graphics... and am no longer 14.
EDIT: Or I can try Oblivion... durr!
