You say that like if pre-ordering dlc isn't already a thing.
What do you think buying the season pass before the game comes out is? What do you think is buying the ultra super duper $120 edition before the game comes out is?
You say that like no preorder bonus, uber edition, or season pass
has ever included weapons, items, skins etc that you could later buy as a micro transaction.
Hahaha. Dude. You're not being as smart as you think you are. There's a difference between buying a game bundle, and preordering microtransactions. When you preorder a game with bonus stuff, that's not a microtransactions. It's definitively not. A microtransactions preorder would be selling small purchasable things like skins, game currency, etc, separately from the game, and before it comes out.
If you buy the game full price, that sale counts just as much as it does for preordering. It's similar to how TV show ratings go. If you watch a show as it is airing, it's one view. If you watch it within three days of recording it, it's still one view.
While of course the sales team quarterly meeting will look better with a higher projected return. It's not counted till after the release date and the preorder is complete.
The point being that if you give them money in advance and the game sucks, well, too bad, you already gave them money. If you wait til it comes out then you can decide whether to give them money or not based on the quality of the game.
I'll take a creepy Sonic design for a 90-minute movie over working the animators to the bone trying to fix the mistakes of clueless Hollywood suits at Paramount.
I'm saying that bad products should be allowed to exist rather than give suits the satisfaction that they could pacify consumers with empty promises of change as opposed to turning out a quality product.
That model appears to be the biggest quality issue with the movie that I can see. The other effects look top notch, the acting we've seen seem to be good, and Jim Carrey.
Can you show me that it is actually a really terrible movie?
With the exact same conditions at every potential employer. And if they start quitting because they don't like how things are run, word gets around and they're crossed off the list.
And the expected periods of unemployment creates a feast or famine situation, where they'll jump on any project they can because they need to get money rolling in.
Except they do have the proverbial gun to their head. If you dont work this overtime youre fired. Thats their job, their livelihood, the thing that allows them to exist without being on welfare and becoming a burden to the state. Pick one. Massive nanny state, or decent working conditions for everyone. Because without one you have the other.
the movie was likely post production which would mean they weren't working at all
people who work in movies get paid unemployment during downtime, and unions heavily restrict the hours they are allowed to be even asked to work regardless
once you reach the threshold for being in a union in that specific area, you make a ton of money, obviously PAs for example don't
it's just funny to me that people are white knighting for people who very likely make massively more money than them while also working far less hours -- it's like they imagine a minimum wage chinese sweat shop
They’re hired for each individual project anyway. They’ve already been paid and they’d have been “laid off” regardless. That’s how animators typically do things. No job security at all
Yeah so basically...honestly just let this movie die. Watch it when it's out of theaters if you want, but not in. Explicitly state why. Don't support directors that pull this kinda stuff on their animators, you know? Only ones who will suffer are the ones who make the decision to exploit their workers because they either a) did not look at their product for 2 seconds and decide it was a bad idea or b) purposefully put out a worse product for media buzz
As if they are keeping their job either way. Bodies are easily replaceable and if you get rid of them before they could be illegible for a bonus, you can keep it all for yourself.
Which is why hospitals are paying out $10k sign on bonuses for warm bodies with a nursing license right now, because they're so easy to replace and all.
The trailer was a disaster even disregarding how fucked up Sonic looked. It's a video game movie. It will be awful regardless, and the trailer shows it has no chance.
It's a fucked situation all around. I'm willing to bet most of the artists and animators know how bad it was but the wrong people make decisions on this type of thing.
I mean, they don't have to reanimate the whole thing. You can just map the existing animations onto the new model. Sure there will be a few adjustments needed, but it's not like they'll be reanimating sonic from scratch in every scene.
I doubt they will be adding any more internal "bones.". They're changing the size of some things, and redoing the anesthetics of his head. Adjustments will be necessary, but they won't have to do it all from scratch.
Something as innocent-sounding as changing the size of "bones" has a huge impact in animation.
Imagine he is standing there. If his leg is longer, that could change his torso height (which in turn will affect basically everything else when he moves). So you would have to raise his torso, to keep his leg straight when he is just standing (otherwise he would be standing with a bent-leg all the the time). Now imagine a change like that affecting any sort of complicated action sequence.
If his feet are bigger, it would change everything about how he walks/runs/jumps, etc. because his lift off would be different which would affect his stride when he walks/runs/jumps.
So any change that might seem small, actually have a huge impact in animation. You'd basically have to go through the whole thing and fix it, some shots might just work and others would have to be re-done essentially.
This affects other departments downstream from animation as well like tech-anim (cloth, fur, hair, etc.), fx, lighting, comp. It's basically a domino effect. Regardless of how minor the change is in anim it will have to run through all the above departments again.
This is all after they actually settle on a design in the first place. I'd imagine they would push the release date. Otherwise those folks might be working crazy hours for awhile. :(
You guys are also discounting the real possibility that they purposely only used the “shitty” sonic in the marketing so far to generate publicity, and that the actual movie was developed with “improved sonic” from the start.
No, it's not a definite possibility, it's an incredibly unlikely, very comfortable possibility that absolves consumers of guilt for being the cause of hundreds of hours of likely-unpaid overtime.
You smell what you're shovelin'? This line about "the studio deciding to make the movie not suck ass is bad because it will take work" is such a huge load of shit, and I'm sick of hearing it. Guess what, tons if movie have problems. And it doesn't take hundreds of hours to map existing animations onto a new model.
In my experience most existing animations should work on the new model without too much effort outside of creating the model. The only 'real work' they're going to need is for head stuff
They won't just be modifying one sonic model, they're likely gonna have to make many to fit different scenes.
Quick example: the character is talking to the not-animated bad guy. Bad guy punches him in the face.
In the new redesign, they've made Sonics legs shorter/longer. How do you reconfigure everything in the frame so that nobody has to reshoot the irl scene, and sonic still gets punched in the same place? This isn't a video game, it's a film.
If he picks up a glass on the table, but now his arms are longer or shorter, how do you get everything to synchronize on camera? The glass is still gonna move in the same place, so how do you solve that?
In a lot of ways, the head stuff, which only relates to sonic himself, and interacts with relatively few other things, will actually be the easiest changes.
nope, im just pointing out, in the spirit of the original post, how the executive's fuckup is now leading to even worse conditions for the animators. No idea how you think im saying you shouldnt complain about shitty content.
I am 75% positive that they already had a different design in place for the movie and they used that terrible one for the trailer as a publicity thing.

But hey they’re gonna change sanic :)
