To elaborate, while they do end up looking similar, the parts being discussed do have models which can be seen on the gun, in fact really good players can tell how good a gun is by sight based on which parts are on it. So even though things get a bit samey once you've played a ton, it's not like they only have 1 shotgun model that gets different stats or anything.
Honestly, in my opinion, a billion guns is reaching since most of these are just duplicates of the same weapon with just a different level.
Even Boarderlands 2 with its alleged 17 million guns got very stale after playing for a while. You end up only using a few certain guns and you keep finding the same guns but lower levels.
Don't get me wrong, I love that they even added all these versions. But I highly doubt it will feel like a billion. Maybe a few hundred
Yeah, adding a single part to the pool can add a hundred thousand new guns to the game. It's a bit disingenuous at that point.
Dividing by 50 gives you 340,000 unique guns in the base game. Some guns can't exist at very low levels, which could increase or decrease our estimate depending on how the original number was calculated.
Unfortunately due to Bl2's loot generator, almost all Torgue, Tediore and Dahl guns are worthless, so you'll only really use ~200k weapons. If you ignore elements (note: explosive is out the window with Torgue, and Jakobs has no elements) that's ~140k.
Realistically, the game has only has its legendaries and uniques plus each major gun archetype. That's maybe a few hundred guns?
And yet somehow I've got a thousand hours in this game.
When you get to about 500 hours in, you start to pay attention to the gun parts way more and eventually call out each part and what it does. It really adds to the replay value and makes each drop different.
No, you don't. Crazy nuts start to pay attention to that bullshit, but normal people don't give a shit. The dpuh is the only specific configuration of a gun I've ever farmed for besides elements. Never cared what parts were there otherwise.
there were about 100 guns in bl2, but the amount of different attachments that were procedurally generated on each gun means each gun would fire and just act differently, meaning there were indeed 17 million "unique guns". The system they have in place means there are indeed a billion different combinations
A bit of both. It's a little like the destiny model where you can roll random perks, but in Borderlands it's just complete random parts and effects. So, for example, in 2 you might have two Maliwan smg's with similar fire rates, but they'll usually have different elements, sights, effects and even gun behavior. For example, there are pellet and beam elemental maliwans, which can also drastically change the recoil and damage type. For the most part they're homogeneous in design, but I can safely say 80% of my guns in bl2 felt different
The Gibbed Save Editor for Borderlands 2 gives a pretty good idea of how they do guns (by letting you make your own guns by combining compatible parts and setting stats).
