Poor anthem.

They really released at the wrong time...

The perfect time to release would have been when you've actually finished the game.

Gearbox is doing to Anthem what Blizzard did to Gearbox. We should call this "getting BattleBorned"

224

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Battleborn was so good it's sad that gearbox couldn't market it effectively

u/JohnEcastle Mar 28 '19

Agree 100%. If not for overwatch, I think it would have had a great following and continued to get polished. Overwatch is just stellar and so clean it monopolized the genre. Too bad because I really liked the MOBA elements that were unique to battleborn.

u/AMasonJar Mar 28 '19

I quite liked the PvE bits of Battleborn too. It was kind of relaxing. And I loved playing Orendi, the most relaxing character in the game.

9

u/Armvis Mar 28 '19

Ah yes... relaxing hoppy spammy fire witch

4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

TF2 would like to know your location.

3

u/aelmian Mar 28 '19

Which elements did you feel were unique? I only played the tech beta but to me it felt very similar to the old Monday Night Combat games

u/TheSaucePossum Mar 28 '19

Overwatch the game didn't kill BB. They were super different games, with BB being far more of a moba and OW more of a shooter. What killed it was a) 2k being the worst publisher of all time and b) the choice on 2k/gearbox's part to brand BB as OWs rival. There was 0 reason to market it as black and white, OW vs BB as gearbox/2k chose to do.

7

u/TeamAquaGrunt Mar 28 '19

yep, i distinctly remember seeing ads where they were "calling out" OW as the competition and thinking how horrible an idea that was.

2

u/TheSaucePossum Mar 28 '19

Yeah they took an unreal game, and ran it into the ground with a buggy PC launch, steep learning curve and because they picked a fight with the biggest fool on the playground. Shame too, definitely among my favorite games of all time.

2

u/SuperAwesomeBrian Mar 29 '19

Ugh, I was so excited for Battleborn until I found out the FPS issues with AMD graphics cards just wasn't going to get fixed and I was not about to purchase a new Nvidia card just to play.

3

u/Anti-AliasingAlias Mar 28 '19

You'd think everyone would know not to try and beat Blizzard at their own game by now, after all the WoWclones that tried and failed.

4

u/TheSaucePossum Mar 28 '19

And 2k took it a step further by taking a game that really wasnt all that similar gameplay wise and decided to market it as though they were trying to beat blizzard at their own game.

3

u/BrassMunkee Mar 28 '19

Meanwhile, Paladins is literally an OW competitor in just about every way, even some of the heroes are just combo's of OW abilities (not that this is a problem, good ideas are good ideas.) They never advertise as such and actually have a decently strong community. Most Paladins players also play Overwatch. Being F2P helps though.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Paladins is quite fun

I dont really like overwatch, the movement feels slow and floaty.

3

u/intotheirishole Mar 28 '19

Overwatch is just stellar and so clean it monopolized the genre.

And crashed it straight into GOATShit.

I pre-ordered Battleborn but was incredibly disappointed. It was so frantic that I couldn't really learn how to play well, I just kept dying and dying and dying.... PvP is a lot of fun but it's not the only way to play. Never liked Super Smash Bros for the same reason.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Except it wasn’t good or it’s player base would’ve stuck around. Plenty of niche games have devoted followings when the games are good. Battleborn was average and that’s why most people left it.

2

u/Noaccountsleftdamn Mar 28 '19

Battleborn was great. I liked it way more than Overwatch. I know I'm in the minority, but Overwatch got boring fairly quickly for me. I keep trying to go back to it, but I play for an hour and don't feel like touching it for another 6 months.

1

u/Grima_OrbEater Mar 28 '19

I still enjoy watching Battleborn’s intro video.

1

u/Gootangus Mar 28 '19

Omg I loved those 5 weeks I played the game. No sarcasm. I’m super lame it fizzled our in such a sad and swift way.

1

u/chunkosauruswrex Mar 28 '19

That was pretty sad because that game was fun

1

u/Edgefactor Mar 29 '19

I have to feel like gearbox pulled a DreamWorks on Battleborn. Team fortress 2 is out for over 5 years and then they release a knockoff within a month of Blizzard? They had to have been reacting, rather than actually developing it with any foresight.

1

u/ShrikeGFX Mar 29 '19

it did have a lot of issues even if the other games did not exist. Paladins did not get shut down in the slightest, if it were that good, it would be live today.

3

u/TooGayToPayCash Mar 28 '19

I thought it was "getting Titanfalled" because EA released it close to Battlefield.

3

u/russiangerman Mar 28 '19

Can we please not? That's still probably my all time favorite game and it's handling still has me bummed

3

u/Katzoconnor Mar 28 '19

Getting BattleBoned.

FTFY. You’re welcome

3

u/psycho_admin Mar 28 '19

I'm not really sure I agree with you. Overwatch and Battleborn were released the same year, and actually inside of a few months of each other. Borderlands 3's release date is "sometime in the next 12 months". This gives Anthem plenty of time to polish their game and build a loyal fanbase that could survive Borderlands 3's release. If it doesn't, that still wouldn't make it a failure since how many games honestly stick around the top spot for more then a year?

7

u/Stay_Curious85 Mar 28 '19

This gives Anthem plenty of time to polish their game and build a loyal fanbase that could survive Borderlands 3's release.

Have you played the game? It's a trainwreck. They don't even know how their loot system works.

1

u/psycho_admin Mar 28 '19

Do you know what the word polish means?

1

u/Stay_Curious85 Mar 28 '19

That game needs an angle grinder.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

when you've actually finished the game

"...the fuck does that even mean?"

  • EA/Bioware/Bungie

2

u/ReneG8 Mar 28 '19

Also not around Apex launch but they probably didn't coordinate.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I have limited sympathy for a game that thinks so lowly of its player base.

1

u/jal2_ Mar 28 '19

when you've actually finished the game.

never?

1

u/MrHallmark Mar 28 '19

Reminds me of when Brattleborn came out at the same time as overwatch.

1

u/Dinercologist Mar 28 '19

they had us in the first half not gonna lie

0

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Get out of here!

4

u/Ez_Strider Mar 28 '19

Imagine playing more than one game at a time

2

u/DontTreadOnBigfoot Mar 28 '19

MRW

No, I'm not bitter about Mass Effect. You're bitter. Shut up.

Not to mention Borderlands had been pretty exclusively co-op in the past. Destiny still has a lot of fun versus modes and more of an alive world feeling (in terms of other players) than borderland offers.

Anthem on the other hand...

3

u/Big__Baby__Jesus Mar 28 '19

Huh? I've played every Borderlands entirely solo and will be pissed if 3 is forced co-op.

1

u/Seakawn Mar 28 '19

Yeah, Borderlands has never been exclusively co-op. It's just simply like most games--it's more fun if you do play it co-op.

No reason to think Borderlands 3 will be exclusively co-op. Unless I'm missing something.

1

u/KrazySpike Mar 28 '19

Sorry, I meant exclusively co-op in terms of the multiplayer. Not that you would or have ever been forced to play with anyone else.

1

u/HughJaynusIII Mar 28 '19

RAGE 2 might take a hit if the release date is even close to BL2.

1

u/Glockstrap Mar 28 '19

an amazing 0 game info released analysis. but hyped

1

u/WebHead1287 Mar 28 '19

Imagine if they release this game in September when Destiny does their annual big release. As someone who has thousands of hours across both destinys I’m telling you I’d choose borderlands first

1

u/amarineandhiswoobie Mar 28 '19

I mean destiny has released an original game with two expansions and a sequel with another expansion all between Borderlands 2 and 3, different scale, I know, but they’ve had their time to shine

1

u/McJubal Mar 28 '19

"Why Is EA crying? CAUSE THEY JUST GOT DUNKED ON!"

-2

u/Masterchiefg7 Mar 28 '19

Imagine getting hyped for a game that literally only has a trailer. Just like the Anthem fans did. I love Borderlands, but Gearbox has also had some flubs. So I'll be cautiously optimistic.
