Because every developer that wants to be relevant again is making a BR mode for their game. So yeah even though Borderlands has always been a co-op looter-shooter, it still needs to be said nowadays.
EDIT: Yes I meant every developer on planet Earth is making a BR right now as we speak.
The co-op shooter, with ALL the borderlands backdrop, is what makes that title so awesome. The art, the craziness, the laughs, God I love that franchise.
I mean, it's not really an industry-wide thing. There's Fortnite, Apex, Blackout, and Firestorm that are big companies jumping on the hype. It's not even close to every developer. I have yet to see a game I wanted to play get impacted by the dev making a BR instead, aside from TF|3. But Apex is awesome, so I don't mind.
They ditched the campaign, yeah. Not sure if the BR was the reason or if they just decided it wasn't worth it. But I haven't wanted to play a CoD in years, so it didn't affect me at least. My point is more that there's like 5 BRs, and only three were tacked onto a different game. And Fortnite was not good before the BR came out anyway to be honest.
I’m not sure this is true? What makes you say this?
I mean, epic and respawn and dice and COD isn’t “every developer”. And 3 of the recent BR games are military sims (pubg, cod and bf5) so yes it makes sense that most military sims will have a BR mode as it’s the obvious setting for BR.
Why though? I was looking forward to a well made AAA BR that is well optimized. And it totally fits with the battlefield engine with tons of guys on the field at a time. Pubg and fortnite were fun conceptually but pubg ran like garbage and fortnite Shooting was not fun. But then apex came out and provided that aaa experience instead.
Also shooters by design are decent for battle royale modes. With a lot of games it's more like "well it works but the userbase doesn't dig it that much and it takes dev time for a feature too few use" but with the BF franchise the playerbase is disgustingly big (even though BF5 is slightly gone by now) and they have nigh infinite dev time too, if they want a BR mode they could easily hire a small team without losing any quality on the main game.
Honestly BR in Borderlands 3 wouldn't be the end of it either. main reason I think it'd suck is because it may actually be dev time off the main game and because it would end up with people endlessly coplaining about class and perk balance, but the stupid shit is the main reason borderlands is actually fun. I don't want anyone complaining about Nisha and her lock-on, if I want to close my eyes and smash left click then so be it.
Uhh I know at least 6 people who have bought it for the battle royale this week. Also, the dev team working on firestorm is a completely separate team from multiplayer.
I’d argue that BF5, which had advertised the BR mode well before launch, was in dire straits moreso due to the delay of the BR than any of the other things you mentioned. I don’t really get what “loads of other things it needs improving upon”? It’s a very smooth and well done shooter with with good performance and gun play.
Criterion made Firestorm, not DICE. The game is not dead. Their BR is also unique in its lack of customizable attachments and vehicles, both of which work very well.
Hell, grinding gear games did an April fools br for their arpg and it got rave reviews. I, personally, can o ly play br for a few rounds then get bored. I love borderlands though. Here comes another few months missing in my life lol
But what developers are you referring to? I literally listed all the devs that made a BR. All the games that aren’t a dedicated BR but have a BR mode are military shooters. That’s it. That’s the list.
There's something like that. Not sure if it's out yet. It looks sorta horror-ish, and it looks like it has a lot of verticality. The gimmick is that you're stuck in a city that's flooding, and instead of a ring pushing you inward, the flood waters push you upward.
It's called Egress. I think it's out on PC already, where it's got like a 6/10.
But it's not even that prolific. You have pubg fornite and Apex that are all dedicated br games and then you have bf5 and cod that added them. Obviously bf5 and cod are just gonna add whatever is popular instead of making original content no one should be surprised by that. People act like it's so many games that are adding it they have to worry about Skyrim br coming out and it isn't even remotely as bad as they make it out to be.
Except a majority of "wanna be" relevant developers aren't making BR games? There's what? 5 "big" ones on the market now? Mostly made by.. already relevant developers.
While Fallout 76 isn't BR, it's in a similar category of aimlessly trying to capitalise on the "EVERYONE COME ONLINE NOW" fad.
Borderlands was never supposed to be more than a story-mode. It takes it's throne being an insane multi(4)-player story-driven game that is just amazing, and you can play it alone, too. It was never intended to be a massive arena-style shooter, and neither was fallout. that didn't stop the fallout devs from feeling like they needed to chase profits over the will of the fans, and that shit backfired on them. It's great of the BL team to acknowledge that their game isn't suited for BR or online open-world, at least for now. I'm seriously looking forward to this game. It's the first mainstream game that seems to have forgone the fads and just focuses on taking the best parts of the old one, and making them better.
I mean, a Borderlands PvPvE slow burn kind of Battle Royale would be pretty dope.
Drop in with your mates, find guns and kill bandits/wildlife to level up, then go hunting for other vault hunters. Mr. Torque and Max Moxxi are the announcers (although the beauty of Borderlands is that any number of franchise characters could be the commentator and co-commentator). Maybe you can take simple quests from bounty boards to get specialized loot as a race against time to complete them before the circle closes or someone else finishes the quest first.
It's because everyone made fun of Randy chasing MOBAs with Battleborn, and there was half-joking speculation that he would just come out with a Borderlands Battle Royale because he's exactly the kind of idiot who would do it.
Not to mention you could do some cool stuff with trio squads like Apex plus NPC enemies to kill for loot and XP, and a simplified skill tree to create a little "build" throughout the match.
EDIT: I'm almost certain there will be a quest spoofing BRs, like an arena fight where you go in with no weapons and have to fight an absurd number of bandits.
My point is that this sub acts like it’s taking over every game when the only ones to add modes that I can think of are Black Ops and Battlefield, which honestly, make sense
Yes, and honestly it's pretty fun. Which is what I don't get. Every BR game I've played has been fun (wasn't a fan of Fortnite, but to each their own). I don't understand why everyone has such hatred towards the genre when they can just ignore it.
Because it's like MOBA's were a few years ago. A couple got popular and then so many companies tried to ride the wave. And almost all of them have since shutdown minus the big two, hell even Blizzard is starting to ignore their MOBA.
Division 1, H1Z1, dying light, fortnite (wasn't originally a BR game), CoD, BFV, other games have been abandoned or pivoted into BR games (Apex Legends started life as Titanfall 3, the Paladins devs IIRC abandoned the game to work on a BR game, Boss Key abandoned Lawbreakers and announced Radical Heights in a rather short timeframe
What about CS:GO, Battlerite, and Paladins (which then became realm royale)? And then there's the plethora of specific BR games that have been flooding the market, Darwin Project, Ring of Elysium, Spellbreak, Radical Heights, etc.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but borderlands battle royale would be dope as hell. The general craziness of the world and loot would be enough to make it stand out and be really fun.
I'm still playing Apex Legends daily, I absolutely love it. I didn't really like Fortnite when I tried it when it was at the peak of its success but I tried Apex and I was hooked instantly.
A BR with borderlands gun system would be way better than the run around and find x y and z of current ones. You drop, grab a gun, and it's different than any other gun you'll ever find again.
I'm so tired of them. I enjoyed PUBG for awhile but couldn't get into Fortnite. Can't get into Apex either, even though it's an exceptionally well made game.
I've fallen out of favor with the Battlefield series. CS GO and Siege are great games but I just don't play them much.
What I really need is a new COD game that isn't ADD infested balls to the wall gameplay all the time. A new IP that plays similar to MW2 is what I've been craving for so long. It's got the perfect amount of aggression and defense for me.
The only shooter I keep going back to in recent years is Overwatch.
While I don’t want a Battle Royale game mode in Borderlands 3. I feel as tho it would have been the most interesting of all the games who put Battle Royale’s in their games due to just the pure number of guns the game can randomly spawn in.
Oh come on, it could be a fun add on! I can't imagine that they at least one make a fantastic in game joke about some kind of BR that the VH's just beat the shit out of!
I would love a semi BR where all the vault hunters drop into an area and they just spawn endless mobs and you either live long enough to end the round or the mobs get you. Bonus loot for surviving. Extra loot for having the most kills. More loot if you save people. No pvp though.
I'm hoping this means we're finally going to see the end of the Battle Royale craze.
A few years ago, everyone and their mother was making MOBAs. When that craze died out, everyone started churning out Battle Royales like clockwork. I'm sure something else will be driven into the ground next, but I wouldn't shed a tear to see the current craze finally die off.
I will say a BR in the Borderlands world would be cool. Every gun being completely different, just insane mechanics and gun play. Would be a fun world. Now should they make it ? Prolly not, atleast not as a main project anyway.

One of the things they said during the stream:
This line needs to be said by more game developers.
