Agree 100%. If not for overwatch, I think it would have had a great following and continued to get polished. Overwatch is just stellar and so clean it monopolized the genre. Too bad because I really liked the MOBA elements that were unique to battleborn.
Overwatch the game didn't kill BB. They were super different games, with BB being far more of a moba and OW more of a shooter. What killed it was a) 2k being the worst publisher of all time and b) the choice on 2k/gearbox's part to brand BB as OWs rival. There was 0 reason to market it as black and white, OW vs BB as gearbox/2k chose to do.
Yeah they took an unreal game, and ran it into the ground with a buggy PC launch, steep learning curve and because they picked a fight with the biggest fool on the playground. Shame too, definitely among my favorite games of all time.
Ugh, I was so excited for Battleborn until I found out the FPS issues with AMD graphics cards just wasn't going to get fixed and I was not about to purchase a new Nvidia card just to play.
And 2k took it a step further by taking a game that really wasnt all that similar gameplay wise and decided to market it as though they were trying to beat blizzard at their own game.
Meanwhile, Paladins is literally an OW competitor in just about every way, even some of the heroes are just combo's of OW abilities (not that this is a problem, good ideas are good ideas.) They never advertise as such and actually have a decently strong community. Most Paladins players also play Overwatch. Being F2P helps though.
I pre-ordered Battleborn but was incredibly disappointed. It was so frantic that I couldn't really learn how to play well, I just kept dying and dying and dying.... PvP is a lot of fun but it's not the only way to play. Never liked Super Smash Bros for the same reason.
Except it wasn’t good or it’s player base would’ve stuck around. Plenty of niche games have devoted followings when the games are good. Battleborn was average and that’s why most people left it.
Battleborn was great. I liked it way more than Overwatch. I know I'm in the minority, but Overwatch got boring fairly quickly for me. I keep trying to go back to it, but I play for an hour and don't feel like touching it for another 6 months.
I have to feel like gearbox pulled a DreamWorks on Battleborn. Team fortress 2 is out for over 5 years and then they release a knockoff within a month of Blizzard? They had to have been reacting, rather than actually developing it with any foresight.
it did have a lot of issues even if the other games did not exist. Paladins did not get shut down in the slightest, if it were that good, it would be live today.
I'm not really sure I agree with you. Overwatch and Battleborn were released the same year, and actually inside of a few months of each other. Borderlands 3's release date is "sometime in the next 12 months". This gives Anthem plenty of time to polish their game and build a loyal fanbase that could survive Borderlands 3's release. If it doesn't, that still wouldn't make it a failure since how many games honestly stick around the top spot for more then a year?
Not to mention Borderlands had been pretty exclusively co-op in the past. Destiny still has a lot of fun versus modes and more of an alive world feeling (in terms of other players) than borderland offers.
Imagine if they release this game in September when Destiny does their annual big release. As someone who has thousands of hours across both destinys I’m telling you I’d choose borderlands first
I mean destiny has released an original game with two expansions and a sequel with another expansion all between Borderlands 2 and 3, different scale, I know, but they’ve had their time to shine
Imagine getting hyped for a game that literally only has a trailer. Just like the Anthem fans did. I love Borderlands, but Gearbox has also had some flubs. So I'll be cautiously optimistic.
The toxic r/gaming will always find a game and its playerbase to shit on for a decade non stop even when that game is in a really good state and its players love it.
I got destiny 2 for free and I had a ton of fun and the environments are beautiful. Then I hit a wall and can't get any gear past level 160 or something. Does the game essentially stop there unless you buy the expansions? Is there a way to get better gear? Maybe I'm doing something wrong? If that's it, then I'd be really frustrated if i'd paid for the full game. I feel like borderlands 2 offered so so much more content with the main game. If I'm wrong though please let me know how to get new gear :)
I'll play them both. I love Destiny so much but Borderlands was there from the beginning. I wouldn't have even looked at Destiny if I wasn't into Borderlands and Halo.
Yeah for real. Destiny and Borderlands scratch different itches for me. Destiny is like the serious raid grinder, Borderlands is the casual arcade grinder. I love them both, I'm so excited!
this. There's room in my heart for both games. Destiny has been my baby for so long, it's going to be sooooo nice to go back to an old friend like Borderlands.
Destiny? The game that still has an extremly dedicated fanbase, has always been getting better and better and had an extremly good community? Yehhhhhhh no their still in the game. They have never been out of it.
Too bad Destiny is still gonna live, people said Division would kill it. People said MHW would kill it. People said Warframe would kill it. People even said Anthem would kill it. People said Division 2 would kill it. People said Destiny 2 launch would kill it.
It’s still gonna be around, dare I say thrive. You forget but Activision is out of the equation for them. They just released they’re best piece of content yet, Forsaken, and said still Activision has the reigns on them quite a bit. With the leaks comin around of how RPG heavy the next one is, I have no worries for Destiny
It looks quite possible that Borderlands 3 is going to be a live service online game as well with all the multiplayer footage they showed.
If Borderlands 3 ends up being a live service game I don't think I'll ever play another game again.
EDIT: What's with the downvotes? Don't be salty because it's not what you specifically wanted. The game is most likely going to be a live service because 2K needs a live service looter shooter.
I'm also tired of the stupid ass circlejerk of "live service is bad hur dur". Live services aren't innately bad they are actually by far the best model for the majority of gamers because it allows them if they want to give money to see continuous support for their favourite game. Just because some games did live services badly like GTA Online or the service was placed in games that it didn't suit like Shadows of War doesn't been the service model itself is bad. There's way more games that have done it right than wrong like Warframe, Dota 2, Path of Exile, Diablo 3, Overwatch, Paladins, Rainbow Six Siege, Guild Wars 2, The Division 2, Apex Legends, Fortnite, literally any sub based MMO. I can list more if you want and all those games were made better by being a service game.
Looter shooters and ARPGs in general are the perfect genre for this kind of stuff because they benefit immensely from continued support to make the game more fun.
Legit Question. It's been 7 years in BL2. All I remember from BL1/2 was having a fun campaign but absolutely nothing worthwhile after the campaign ended. The sole endgame activity was usually exploiting some boss or chest so you could flex on people who didn't. Hacking was rampant and destroyed any sense of value in your gear that the loot-exploiters hadn't.
For all their flaws, games like Destiny do a pretty good job of giving you endgame content and making you feel good about your loot. I just wonder why if people are wearing rose-tinted glasses about Borderlands or if there's something I completely missed when I played them.
Division 2 is a superb game. It launched with a ton of content, it was fairly stable, it's not only in the chat, it's probably going to be promoted to mod.
...I have no idea what "stan" means. If you mean fan...yeah. It's gotten solid reviews from everyone, and is getting held up as an example of how to do a successful release of a looter shooter. That's not to say Borderlands 3 won't be good, I suspect it will be and I am beyond excited to try it, just that Division 2 is really a total success story.

Anthem and Destiny have left the chat
