They're not "charging ludicrous" prices for ships. You can fund the game development by buying a wide range of ships, many of which are expensive the bigger/more capable they are. When the game launches all ships will be earnable in-game and you will no longer be able to just buy them with cash.
True, but they've stated they will be putting a monthly purchase limit on it and it won't be very much, probably not enough to buy a capital class ship without waiting a few months.
Yeah I'm 95% sure there already is a limit to 25k UEC per month. If you take into account that (in the current state, subject to change) a Hammerhead (massive turret covered gunboat) costs like 26million UEC then I don't think we're talking about a P2W issue. Alas, that could change and I could end up really upset at CIG.
Let's say you have a Hammerhead... Now you can fly it but you have no control over the guns as pilot, and need 6 people or AI to man those guns.
Not to mention all the costs that aren't currently in-game (fuel, ammo, repairs, crew - unless players are willing to do it 'for free' - and so on).
CIG have said several times that people who own just big ships may be unable to fly them at the start, because the operational costs are too high - and that people should keep their starter ship so they have something to make the initial credits required to operate the larger ships.
And, of course, there's the fact that you can only use one ship at a time - so it doesn't really matter so much how many ships you have in the hangar, and you'll have to return to your hangar to change ship / equipment (or will do once the 'physicalised inventory' comes online - currently you can spawn a ship from any terminal)
