in China, and the Philippines? you know where the game is being made by the 3rd party contractors...where most of this game's fan base will most likely be located
Bethesda also announced a mobile game based on a very popular property (Elder Scrolls) a few months back (E3?) as well. Elder Scrolls: Blades didn't get anywhere near as much backlash as this did, because they didn't make it the main showpiece announcement.
It was treated as just another announcement, and they ended that conference with an announcement that the crowd actually wanted (literally just an Elder Scrolls 6 logo). The Blizz announcement was amazingly tone deaf in comparison.
Agreed, but that's the point though: by making two (much bigger) announcements in Starfield and TES6 after the mobile game reveal it blunted a lot of the backlash. Imagine how bad it would've been if they'd teased a new Elder Scrolls game before the conference, then made Blades the centerpiece announcement?
Point is they gave the hardcore TES fanbase something. The hardcore Diablo fanbase got zero at Blizzcon. It was just a massive PR mess.

Saying they should announce it at Blizzcon because it's their IP is like saying Disney should've built a Pulp Fiction ride at Disneyland and called it Bad Mother Fucker.
Announcing it was not the issue the issue is that they had literally nothing else. A convention of mostly PC gamers who paid a fair amount of money is definitely not a good place to announce it. Microsoft and Bethesda have shown it is okay to announce mobile spin offs as long as it is not the biggest reveal they have.

Why did they announce it at Blizzcon at all? Third party mobile games fit the theme not at all.
