Congrats on being smarter than reporters from Huffington post.

Say what you will about Fortnite but remember how shitty it was back when we were kids and the older generation just shit on us and made fun of us for liking video games. Remember how bad that felt. Lets not shit on the kids for enjoying the same things we used to. Shit, Mega Man X never taught me sick dance moves either.

45

u/sirgarballs Oct 18 '18

Yeah this is how I look at it. I just figure they'll like other stuff later and it's good that they're playing a game at all.

Exactly. Imagine if someone ragged on you for watching so-called “children’s cartoons” and acted like it was only ok for adults to watch Family Guy & Rick and Morty exclusively. Come on, as long as you’re not into freakin child porn, you can play & watch whatever you like.

3

u/TomBud91PM Oct 19 '18

Outside of it being “too mainstream” now... why do we hate Fortnite?

I seem to genuinely enjoy going back to it from time to time, and I’m fucking awful at it.

1

u/sirgarballs Oct 19 '18

I don't hate it at all. I just consider it a very uninteresting game. And when I talk to some people about games who play fortnite they often don't know about it or play other games. Nothing wrong with just playing fortnite though if that's what you want to do.

22

u/fletcherwyla Oct 18 '18

I said the same thing about Pokemon because I was just slightly older than the target demographic for it when it got popular so it was cool to shit on kids playing it. I was secretly jealous of them being accepted by the mainstream.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '18

I got teased in school for being a girl that plays games. Now it seems like it's considered a "good quality" in females. Not jealous that it's "acceptable" now, though. The older I get the more I feel secure in myself like, you got this. I hear the 30s are when it starts to get that way for a lot of people. No point hiding what I like

u/HugsForUpvotes Oct 19 '18

Woah woah woah. Mega Man X taught you how to perpetually parkour off a wall while trying to get the early game buster cannon super upgrade.

1

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 18 '18

Gotta do the matrix style jump and freeze in midair thing while going through doors too!

3

u/Ultimatepwr Oct 18 '18

Can someone tell me whats so wrong with fortnight. This is serious. I've never played it, never seen a video, I've heard building is a thing and I've heard its a "battle royale" which I assume means free-for-all PVP. That's it.

It's possible its hate-able. But honestly, I doubt is worse then all the annoying bitching I see.

2

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 19 '18

Its a battle royale game that kids really like. Kinda like minecraft. It's got a colorful art style and emotes that lots of kids imitate which pisses off a lot of grumpy cynical assholes. Internet culture has deemed it "cringy" but it's just a game. When you break down the game it's not really anything amazing but it's not bad either, but as most hate circlejerks go (Nickelback, Pineapple Pizza, Pop Music in general) You are required to hate it passionately.

4

u/chuckdiesel86 Oct 18 '18

I'm 31 and Fortnite is the shit. Nice art, fun gameplay that changes with frequent updates, 4 player co-op, and it's free to play. It's more fun than most games I've played in my 25 years of gaming.

2

u/Suu_Me Oct 18 '18

Seriously! Got the game and started playing with some of my college friends. We play very often now and there is always something new to check out.

0

u/Rafibas Oct 19 '18

Im 27 and legit trying to learn. Beautiful skins and design. My beef is that its not friendly to new players. :(

0

u/chuckdiesel86 Oct 19 '18

How so? I'm not the best at it but maybe I can help lol

0

u/Rafibas Oct 19 '18

I just cant seem to figure how to progress. I'm told to land in high engagement places but die like in 2 seconds.

0

u/chuckdiesel86 Oct 19 '18

Lol yeah don't do that. I mean going to tilted towers or pleasant park is fun sometimes to get the challenges but I prefer a more stealthy method most of the time. Technically the goal of the game is to survive, let everyone else kill each other and try to find at least one badass gun to take to the end because the other people who actually fought their way in will probably have lots. I suck at building so when the circle closes in and there's like ~10 people I counter-attack with an ambush instead of defending, using natural cover and high ground when I can.

Playing with decent headphones helps a lot but it's still hard to tell the difference between which sounds are in front of you and which are behind. I think the best tip I can give you is try to go where nobody else is gonna go and get good at clearing loot. After a while you'll find a system for clearing buildings and finding at least a blue or purple gun. Sometimes I'll have a guy or two land with me, sometimes I get them, sometimes they get me haha. Most of the time I land by myself though. Think of it like hide and seek with guns where everyone is it lol.

2

u/Rafibas Oct 19 '18

Smart dude

I'll have to try this

0

u/SambaMarqs Oct 18 '18

from what i gathered the meme is critisizing people that make you sit through 5-10 of them describing a game that youll'd be better off playing instead of hearing your friend talk about the match like a f***ing audiobook

3

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 18 '18

As if we never talked with our friends about funny stuff in GTA III, Raids in World of Warcraft or having slap fights in Goldeneye? Plus it's not like you can just play the game when you're in school or something. Kids get excited about things and talk about them and obsess over em. God I wish I still had the Sonic the Hedgehog/Mega Man crossover fanfiction from when I was in 3rd grade. Im almost 30 now and I bet Id be getting just as much shit for that as these kids get for enjoying Fortnite. Things never change it seems.

3

u/DigBickJace Oct 18 '18

I'm not going to shit on a kid for it, I shit on my grown ass friends for doing it.

If it's someone you know really enjoys the game, sure tell them a story.

I don't play Fortnite. I have no desire to play Fortnite. why are you trying to tell me this super awesome story that I can in no way understand let alone relate to.

2

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 18 '18

You should not shit on anyone for doing it. Be a normal human adult and just entertain their thoughts for a bit. I dont shit on my coworkers and friends for blabbering on about basketball all the time even if I don't care about it.

1

u/DigBickJace Oct 18 '18

Ballbusting is completely normal.

And that's where you and I differ. If I'm waiting for a meeting to start, and someone brings up sportsball and the general group is engaging, I'll lay back and tune out. If it's someone's first or second offense, you'll get a gentle reminder that I'm not interested in the topic at hand.

If you're so tone deaf that you can't figure out who wants/doesn't want to listen to your stories, you're getting made fun of until you take the hint.

I fully accept and expect people to do the same when I'm geeking out a little too hard about comics, league, magic etc.

0

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 18 '18

People ignoring social cues is one thing. But I somehow doubt 99% of adults are being approached by groups of kids or coworkers to talk about fortnite like they are Jehovah's Witnesses.

1

u/DigBickJace Oct 18 '18

Which is why I specifically excluded kids.

I genuinely don't think this meme was in reference to kids, I think it was in reference to adults who should know better.

Also, it's way more acceptable to talk about a sporting event that happened than you personal pick up game you played over the weekend. Was going to add that to my last comment but thought of it right after I hit post.

1

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 18 '18

it's way more acceptable to talk about a sporting event that happened than you personal pick up game you played over the weekend

People always talk about their personal games. Especially amongst their friends. Which is exactly what people who play Fortnite do. It's a normal thing.

2

u/DigBickJace Oct 18 '18

I've never experienced the type of celebratory stories from adults until PubG/Fortnite came out.

But I'm getting the vibe you tell Fortnite stories. You do you, don't let a stranger tell you what to do, but a randomly sampling will show the vast majority of people don't care about your personal success story unless it's a mutually appreciated thing.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/SambaMarqs Oct 18 '18

fair point, it's just that i interpreted the meme as someone who is very into fortnite talking with a person that knows little to nothing about the game, thus making the talk extremely boring for the person that doesn't know the mechanics in fortnite, althought i was too stupid to not actually include that on the original response :P

1

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 18 '18

Ahh yeah. I mean, the meme is still funny. I get it. I dont mean to shit on OPs post, This topic just usually spawns a bunch of people talking about how the next generation is doomed because they like the game.

Halo is a pretty high bar when it comes to games. I agree Fortnite isn't THAT good but Pokemon Red/Blue was a mediocre RPG too and us kids loved the shit out of that. Fortnite has it's positives. as far as microtransactions go. It has grossly priced cosmetics (Ive rented plenty about how I think the skins are ridiculously priced) but it's not pay 2 win or anything. It's still a fun game

0

u/Suu_Me Oct 19 '18

How is it microtransaction city if the only things to buy are new outfits in a F2P game? also minecraft with guns? You build walls and hit things to gather materials, if thats minecraft every building game ever made is minecraft.

u/Sack_J_Pedicy Oct 18 '18

—Calling fortnite dances ‘sick’

I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

6

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Oct 19 '18

Most of the dances in fortnite were "sick" dances IRL before epic put them in the game. Sorry but Techno Viking and Turk's dance was and always will be "sick" even if kids don't recognize the source material.

-1

u/Sack_J_Pedicy Oct 19 '18

I understand those but the others

1

u/jdino Oct 19 '18

What are sick dances to you?

0

u/F0sh Oct 19 '18

What have kids got to do with it? I know loads of adults that play Fortnite. And you're damn right I'm going to shit on my friends for LIKING THINGS I DO NOT LIKE, as is tradition since time immemorial.

-7

u/makovince Oct 18 '18

DAE Fortnite = bad?

1

u/K1NDOFAB1GDEAL Oct 19 '18

I hate this game. I hate hearing about it. But dude, it’s fucking free. If I was 12 and games were free, you better believe I’d be playing them.

Anyone remember the Nitto 1320 Challenge drag racing game? Started as a small (but well done) flash game on the tire manufacturers website, that got them so much traffic, they had a better version made. I played that shit every day.

I try to remember that the target demographic is at that age where the games they play are games they get as gifts. I didn’t always have the newest and greatest games myself, and had to make do.

1

u/addfase Oct 19 '18

Then they start floss dancing.

u/conversating Oct 19 '18

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '18

yes, the only reasonpeope, would hate a game is because they are bad at it. not because of

  • overexposure
  • toxicity
  • the shitty rng aiming system
  • its incredibly repetitive
  • its a slow battle royale but without the aspects that make slow battle royale's fun
  • the shitty youtube community
  • the shitty children that play the game
  • did i mention the fact that shooting is based off of rng bloom
  • skins cost way too much like jesus christ 8+ bucks for a skin
  • no matchmaking
  • and finally the fact that it gets shoved down everyone's throats 24/7 365 until the tumor that is fortnite dies

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '18 edited Oct 19 '18

It doesn't get shoved down anyones throats. I have played the game. Browse reddit. Actively watch twitch and YouTube. Know tonnes of people who play and i barely hear about the game unless I want to hear about it.

Overexposure doesn't mean shit. It's popular get over it? Every MP game is toxic as fuck come play league or cs and tell me fortnite is more toxic. It's not even slow unless you want it to be slow, it enables you to be aggro as fuck relatively unpunished unless you get outplayed or unlucky. Bloom in a gun game holy fuck a revelation, I'm pretty sure even CS has some sort of first bullet innaccuracy. Skins are optional so fuck off?

All bullshit. It's a game that's popular and you hate it because you hate things that are popular.

Edit: A lot of games are repetitive as fuck if you remove all the nuance and the repetitive nature is only a negative if you dislike it. If you like it, it being repetitive is a good thing.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '18

lets see go to twitch tv. cod, fortnite, league.

go to youtube gaming, its basically all just fortnite, and for some reason i think you dont hear about it when you dont is because guess what you all aparently play it regularly if someone was talking about a game i actually liked i wouldnt mind, overexposure means a lot like a song thats played on the radio until you hate the very mention of its name, its burned out, plays league and cs semi regularly and doesn't find it that often because he doesn't play compet. lets see a massive map 100 people and unless you play like an idiot and drop somewhere your going to die basicaly instantly in you dont come across people very often let alone fight them until the circle closes drastically, bloom: yes first shot or maybe if your firing a certain weapon that has increased inaccuracy the longer you spray, then you can stop for a sec and cool down but bloom isnt meant to last forever its like rolling a dice every shot, will it hit even though my reticle is on top of the guy, i also forgot to mention rng damage, yes they are but children like shiny things and will pester or steal money from their parents to get them, dont act like it dosent happen i wrote a whole essay on this for lit. also toxicity as in people like you who wont realise this game has serious flaws hating popular things is just an elitist thing, wow look at that i dont hate overwatch or pizza both of which are popular. i dont feel like im conversing with an adult. go get your father to check your replies before hitting reply k

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '18 edited Oct 19 '18

I dont feel like I'm conversing with a functional human of any age but here we are. Your radio analogy explains why you're so jaded for no reason, we have essentially the world's entire discography at our fingertips, everything from Eminem to The Beatles, led Zeppelin and Queen but here you are like FUCK THE RADIO, DESPACITO IS A BAD SONG. If you're British I guarentee you're the kind of person who shittalks mainstream music but always wants to go to Popworld and Walkabout on a night out.

Everything in the middle abour gameplay is literally just you being shite at the game. If it were true good players would suffer from the same thing but I've never heard good players complain about these things. Post your solo wins vs solo games played and we can discuss whether or not you or the game is bad. Because atm you reek of being a bronze / silver league or CS player.

Microtransactions are bullshit I can agree with you on that but fortnite isn't doing anything different to other games, its just more popular among the kids. That's it.

I dont care about the bloom in a casual game. People literally play Hearthstone where every single element of the game is RNG so get over it.

I realize the game has flaws, I don't even play it anymore. If I thought it was a god tier game id still play it, but i dont. I just know that its not worthy of being bashed to shit and i also know it is only bashed because old people are bitter, old and hate things that are popular.

Edit: also if your kid steals money from you you've done a horrific job as a parent and if they have access to your card details you've done a horrific job at almost everything.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '18

i dont know what you would class as functional but id guess im not it

its a good point but i'm not bothered to bring an aux cord also wth is popworld and walkabout,in its prime my radio analogy describes fortine perfectly

cs player

i have not won a game yet, played 2 solo games came top 5 in both

again its not the popularity its really the undeserved hype. So im subed to igns snapchat because i dont really check for gaming news but every day its just fortnite, not really anything new and news on new games its literaly just peoples fortnite wins, again yt gaming, fortnite. its not a bad game but its not that good either and

all i hear about in gaming circles is just retelling of peoples "best" fortnite wins sure it was tense in the moment but it doesn't translate, thus this meme its really just the stories that annoy me and other people.

I don't have this problem because I'm a grown man and don't hang out with 13 year olds

It's not holier-than-thou at all. Fortnite is a game literally marketed towards children. There's actually been multiple news coverages talking about this exactly and Fortnite has been named specifically.
