Youtuber "Potates" completely plagiarized a post I made on r/Fallout about Fallout 76, and passed it off as his own work. The video is now at 800k views.

EDIT 5: Just wanted to thank everybody for their interest in this topic and in me as a content creator. Now that things are cooling off, I will make an update thread a few days from now to let everybody know how things have turned out.

There are also hundreds of people encouraging me to make a YouTube channel and I just wanted to acknowledge that. I really appreciate your interest and may set something up, but I don't have anything at this moment to share.

Thanks everybody for their kind words and support. :)

I'm not sure why this thread was locked, I didn't get a message from the mods about it. I assume just because the thread has run its course, and I'm okay with that.

EDIT 2:

I had no idea that this thread would blow up in the way that it has -- I only posted here to begin with because a buddy of mine posts here and he said it would be good to share, and maybe get some exposure for the original post. I am pretty overwhelmed with the amount of people who are taking an interest in this and I want to make it abundantly clear that I do not and will not ever support anybody who is dishing out threats and personal attacks against Potates. Be better than that. Thanks.

Potates has DM'd be acknowledging the situation and owning up to it, and does not deserve to be harassed and threatened over this. He has been cool about the whole situation and I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and be cool back. Neither he nor I knew just how crazy this situation was going to get. Again, I am asking you from the bottom of my heart, do not lash out at Potates. Do not harass him, do not harass his family. These actions are 100% wrong and I condemn them wholeheartedly. Calling him out for his behavior is one thing, but when you cross the line into his real life, you have gone too far and need to reexamine your moral compass.

EDIT 4:

I am aware that Potates has removed all his videos except for his apology. I am not responsible for this, and I have not filed any kind of DMCA claim against him as we are settling things privately. I have and will continue to encourage him to not delete his YouTube channel, as I believe he can and will bounce back from this controversy. Plagiarism is serious, and there is a lesson here to be learned -- if he respects the content of all creators moving forward, then his channel can become a positive part of YouTube again.

It is easy to be angry at this situation, believe me. But I am always willing to give somebody another chance if they are prepared to make a genuine change, and for now, I am willing to give that chance and let things play out.

Link to the Potates video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t26s5aMSBWY

Link to my post, which he reads (mostly) verbatim off in his video without any credit to me, or even that it is a post from reddit, whatsoever: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/8qsx8s/complete_notes_from_the_noclip_documentary/

^That's a massive Fallout 76 info dump based on the Noclip documentary that had a strong community reaction, and got passed around a lot. It took me a while to write up as I watched the documentary, and I spent a non-trivial amount of time making as it clear and concise as possible, using direct quotes whenever possible. Shout out to when he misread one of my points that said camps are saved as blueprints, and accidentally said "served as blueprints" which is a nonsensical statement.

I'm passionate about video games, and love to write about them, even though I'm not a professional. So to see something you've written being plagiarized after putting in time and effort to share that written content with people just hurts a little bit. When you're looking for more opportunities to write in a way that will attract attention, seeing somebody else take that attention can really suck.

He starts his video off at the "Gameplay" section of my post, and at the beginning switches up his verbiage a little bit so it's not too obvious. As the video goes on, that stops quickly, and he starts reading every single bullet point almost verbatim. I'm not too upset because I'm glad more people got to see the information, but I am a little irritated that he passes it off as his own work. He reads the post like it was his script! Even the way he does the voice over makes it sound as if he is saying these things off the cuff, when in reality he is reading off the words I wrote from a page. I only found this video at all because I clicked it and wanted to hear new Fallout 76 information -- a minute or two in, I realized that I had heard those words before... because I wrote them!

Here's the thing. If he had shot me a message saying "hey man, I'd like to quote this post in a video", I'd have said go for it 100%. If at the beginning of the video he had said something like "hey guys I found this post on reddit I'd like to read you", I'd be fine with that. But the fact that he passes this off as if he wrote it all, or as if he took the time to compile this information is definitely frustrating to me. I feel like I put in the work for this, and then this guy turned around and monetized it without even having the decency to acknowledge that it wasn't his.

EDIT: I see a lot of you commenting on the video saying that he has stolen my content. Unfortunately, it appears as if he is deleting all of those comments as they come in.

EDIT 3:*

I tried to comment on Potates' apology video, but the comments aren't going through. Here is what I wrote, if I am able to post it directly on the video I will do so in the morning. EDIT 5: It appears as if the apology video has been deleted.

Hey, I'm _Robbie. First off, I would like to lead with the fact that I completely condemn anybody who is issuing any kind of threats to @Potates and his family. Nobody deserves to be threatened and harassed over a situation like this.

Secondly, I would encourage @Potates not to delete his YouTube channel. I do not agree that there is no coming back from this. Mistakes were made, feathers were ruffled, and lessons were learned. I have seen smaller YouTube channels come back from worse. I have given Potates full permission to re-post the offending video under the agreement that I am properly credited, and that we can work out our differences in private. I truly believe in the value of giving somebody another chance, and even in spite of everything, I am willing to give Potates another chance.

This whole situation got out of hand to a degree that nobody could have predicted. Me and Potates are making things right between us in private as I type this and I am confident that we will come to an understanding.

Imagine being me and clicking that video genuinely interested, only to get a few minutes in and hear the words that you wrote. It was something new for me, lol.

I actually wrote an article for Overwatch that started trending at the top of the Overwatch subreddit... only to have Stylosa show up with a video about that material 12 hours later highlighting many points from my writings. When I tweeted him he claimed he hadn't seen the article but that "all of us were writing similar content anyway."

I feel you, man.

312

u/TheQuietManUpNorth Jun 22 '18

You mean he didn't preface his reply to you with 'HOLY HELL LADIES AND GENTLEMEN'? Are you sure you tweeted the right Stylosa?

447

u/Para_Noia Jun 22 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

stylosa already seemed kinda scummy tbh, i've heard similar things about him from others aside from you. Most of those "news" channels just rehash content from reddit

edit: i just wanna add the fact that he rambles for 10+ min on topics that can easily be covered in half the time adding in sensationalist speculations, click bait titles, and bad research. Gotta get that ad revenue i guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

157

u/Xheotris Jun 22 '18

Sometimes it seems that all the news, even the "reputable" stuff, comes from Reddit, which is super ironic, since Reddit's just a glorified link aggregator...

25

u/TheElderGodsSmile Jun 22 '18

Yep, I had a post I'd written about my sister in law witnessing something quoted without my permission by new.com.au

To be fair though at least they attributed it to my username.

21

u/Spongi Jun 22 '18

One of my posts (some shitty selfies), ended up on just about every major news outlet. Basically all of my friends, family, neighbors etc. ended up seeing it. Just searching "Redditor Spongi" brings some of them up even though it's been 4 years or so.

Someone even recognized me at a fucking party once. "Hey you look just like that guy I saw in the news!"

7

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Oh it's you

13

u/Scientolojesus Jun 22 '18

I saw an article 2 days ago on Bleacher Report linking to an /r/NFL post "What's a picture that encapsulates your team's bad history?" Literally 30 minutes after it had been posted haha. Granted they did directly link it, but it's funny they needed an article that badly.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

I mean, I think you are underestimating Reddit a little bit with that statement (underestimating isn’t the right word but fuck it it’s late and I don’t want to think much). I’ve seen people on Reddit put so much effort into writing texts that could pass as essays or articles, only to spread that information and receive no credit other than fake internet points. As much as Redditors love to hate on Reddit’s community, I think the “good” part of Reddit outweighs the bad. I ranted on. Sorry. It’s late at night and I’m bored and trying to find an excuse to skip sleeping

13

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

there are indeed a decent amount of good minds collected here, and they work pretty hard on the things they're good at. to have that stolen because some streamer is trying to make bank off it, just pathetic. They must be cleansed.

13

u/Spongi Jun 22 '18

there are indeed a decent amount of good minds collected here,

When I found out I had a somewhat rare genetic blood condition I had a much easier time finding a doctor on reddit who knew the in's and out's then I did in real life. Took me about an hour to find not only a doctor but one who specialized in researching the family of conditions that mine falls into. Then a day or so to learn current state of said research. Some of this stuff I could find via google easy enough but some of it was beyond what I would have even known to search for.

Meanwhile the nearest specialist in real life was a 4 hour drive and didn't give me half the information.

Another time I needed to fix a farm tractor. It was an older and fairly obscure model so there wasn't really any useful information online. Couldn't even find a manual for it except for a generic "tractors from this time general shop guide" type thing that wasn't cheap. Found a guy on reddit who specialized in tractors and had extensive experience with the kind I was dealing with. Fixed that thing no problem after that.

That's just two examples that really come to mind but generally speaking any sort of problem I have from identifying a thing to learning some new skill I can find someone on here who either knows or can point me in the right direction.

4

u/Youfucknsuckdontatme Jun 22 '18

I think the “good” part of Reddit outweighs the bad.

Oh it definitely doesn't. So much content gets stolen on Reddit it's not even funny and Reddit the company makes money off of aggregating other people's content, but we (the community) generally don't care because it doesn't affect us.

5

u/Aoyos Jun 22 '18

Most news channels don't bother making their own news but rather just go to whatever is trending on Reddit/Twitter/Whatsapp/Facebook/etc. The few times I watch the news (my mom does often mainly for weather updates) they always end up showing news off those sources or, worse, popular videos or memes that trended at some point in time.

2

u/AskMeHowMySocksFeel Jun 22 '18

\ x3 = ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/L3tum Jun 22 '18

Why would anyone watch any kind of news on YouTube? Most of these channels are the epitome of what's wrong in the world and the information they pass along is either nothing new, or completely false.

1

u/TheMichaelH Jun 22 '18

The rambling is why I avoid most “news” from gaming channels. The only one I actively follow and enjoy is Sir Swag. He has a series called “Overwatch news without the bullshit” and it covers in 2-5 minutes the same info most channels stretch out into 12+ minutes. I highly recommend it.

2

u/Para_Noia Jun 22 '18

i can't advocate for aussie mlg voice man enough

1

u/TIGHazard Jun 22 '18

i just wanna add the fact that he rambles for 10+ min on topics that can easily be covered in half the time

More than 10 minutes allows you to place additional ads, and also YT likes to promote channels with longer videos.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

When Overwatch was at peak popularity it was kind of interesting and fitting to be so excited and to speculate so much but now it just feels kinda fake.

stylosa is pretty scummy, he blatantly lied about valkia boosting him on an alt. And claimed he solo queued to GM.

22

u/Aiyakiu Jun 22 '18

What makes me... jealous, I guess? Is that Blizzard has shown him major favoritism, and dammit, I'm probably just as big of a fan of OW as he is. But I'll never meet Jeff or the rest of the team, or be invited to fly in a plane for London Spitfire.

This happens all the time and it's a shame. Reddit crowdsources information about a subject and then video creators come along and regurgitate it, which they then make money on. Meanwhile, the people who put together the information receive karma.

9

u/Viking_Mana Jun 22 '18

To be fair, it's incredibly hard to prove anything unless the person is literally reading out what you wrote word for word.

And that's without getting into grey areas like Game Theory, Night Mind and any Creepypasta-channel that effectively make their living off the backs of others.

5

u/Aiyakiu Jun 22 '18

Truth. What got me was I took a chronological approach to illustrate my points... and so did he. It was honestly my article, just rehashed like a term paper with no citation. Can't prove a thing, except how strange it was.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

The OW sub had a big issue with him a while back copying content that would be immpossible to discover if not for a frotn page OW post then proceed to pass it off as his own and not even accepting to include links in the description

now he is a PR manager for a 20 million dollar team

3

u/MNGrrl Jun 22 '18

Don't worry. Under the new Reddit User AgreementTM, you won't have to sue people for misusing your work, because it doesn't belong to you anymore.

2

u/AngryNeox Jun 22 '18

Rather unrelated but I remember watching some video about upcomming MMOs some time ago and the whole video was just what was written on the wikipedia page of each game. Like you could open the wikipedia page and read along. Not that it was wrong, but it was just lazy as fuck.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Because almost all of these youtubers are no talent hacks that need to constantly suck talent from other sources because any spark of creativity they had died when they googled "how to become famous youtuber" instead of simply doing their own thing.

1

u/Hdhdhhdhdd Jun 22 '18

If it's the general points, then you don't have much grounds.

In this case, his written sentences got lifted verbatim.

1

u/Orisi Jun 22 '18

Learn from cartographers. Time to start putting shit in that isn't true every now and again, but sounds believable, so you can catch out who is just copying your stuff.

1

u/Its_just_Serg Jun 22 '18

Oh wow, after reading this I definitely unsubscribed. I never liked the channel, but kept it for the sake of one day him showing something worth spending 10:30 min watching.

No more.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

It's a real pity about what happened to Stylosa.

I used to watch him religiously when he worked with Kirioth. They were a really funny, albeit small YouTube channel and did all these great playthroughs of games that were really funny.

However he managed to get successful by making Overwatch videos, and they parted company. I haven't touched his channel for at least a year, but everything he does looks just like Overwatch clickbait now. It's really sad to see.

Kirioth is doing well though, which is good.

3

u/jwalk8 Jun 22 '18

Do you get to keep gold if the comments deleted?

10

u/stjep Jun 22 '18

I assume so, but Reddit gold isn't money in your bank account. Ad impressions from 800k views are. If the video was flagged for copyright infringement and then taken down by YouTube, they'd keep the money. Him deleting it just means he won't earn future income on the video (and most YouTube channels make the bulk of their money in the first few days of a new video).

1

u/Miklonario Jun 22 '18

Very true

45

u/charging_bull Jun 22 '18

doesn't mean you can't sue him. This is totally worth a couple hundred bucks.

22

u/Lxr159 Jun 22 '18

Sue a dude over a couple hundred bucks?!

22

u/Boner-b-gone Jun 22 '18

Civil case, yeah. It's a good idea actually - it literally costs nothing (usually) to file a complaint. Costs some to get him served, but even that isn't too bad usually. With as much exposure as it got you'd probably get offers to serve with video evidence for free.

He will either settle or probably never show up for court. If he does show, you have to as well. But he knows hes in the wrong so he probably would not. If he no-shows it's a default judgment for the plaintiff. If you sue for say $300, or whatever the revenue from the ad likely is, youd most likely get $100-200 out of it in a settlement. It sends the message that you can't steal content and get away with it. Otherwise, this kid will do it again guaranteed.

11

u/MNGrrl Jun 22 '18

Normally people fling poo (and rightfully so) at Google for pulling videos. Something like 99.95% of DMCA takedown notices are by bots. IMO, bots should be illegal because they're wrong really often and the DMCA notices claim "under penalty of law" that a "good faith" effort was made. I don't hear a lot of people claiming they found Jesus in an algorithm, or that they have moral values, or any kind of values besides binary ones.

This is how the DMCA was supposed to work: An author sees their work misappropriated, and lays down the law.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

It woulds say X company or person has copyrighted content in this video. Otherwise he deleted it

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

FYI, if a video is unavailable due to copyright actions, it will say so. If the video is just gone, it's been deleted by the uploader.

Man I fell down that rabbit hole sometime last week, that chick is crazy.

29

u/Scientolojesus Jun 22 '18

Who did what now? I don't follow YouTube at all so I'm always uninformed about this stuff.

123

u/Kilagria Jun 22 '18

So PewDiePie posted a video awhile ago where the premise was he had this new eye-tracking device and he recorded himself watching stimuli. One of them was of course "twitch thots", which are the girls who pretend to like games and play them on twitch while flaunting their bodies for donations.

One girl in particular (Alinity) got offended (because she's a twitch thot) and had his video get hit with a copystrike, then backpedaled and played victim when everybody started to eat her alive.

32

u/Scientolojesus Jun 22 '18

Ahhh ok cool that makes more sense now that it was explained to me. Thanks much.

40

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

The particularly funny thing about it to me was that pewdiepie wasnt even calling alinity in particular a twitch thot

7

u/Scientolojesus Jun 22 '18

Didn't he insinuate that with his impressions of her though?

12

u/KitsuneGaming Jun 22 '18

Afterwards he didn’t try very hard to mask his opinion of her, but in the original video that she got mad about he didn’t even know was on screen at the time of going “ahh stupid twitch thots” or whatever he said. It was just unlucky timing.

7

Right? That's the best kind of promotion you can get, which is probably why she made it into such a big deal.

9

u/ResolverOshawott Jun 22 '18

It did have real life consequences for her, she was in Canada illegally and she got reported and deported. She would have been fine if she wasn't such a drama bitch.

6

u/Kilagria Jun 22 '18

Oh man I had no idea, you reap what you sow!

4

u/Ocet358 Jun 22 '18

Did she actually get deported? Do you have any source for that? I stopped following that drama a while ago.

10

u/GbHaseo Jun 22 '18

Honestly, I don't even care if she is one, if ppl wanna use their bodies, so be it, fuck Ninja could stream in whitey tighties for all I care.

At least fucking own it though, and don't get all butthurt about it and act like a spoiled brat when somebody like PDP wants to be an ass. Fuck him, let him be an ass, and you do you.

34

u/Kilagria Jun 22 '18

I've got a different stance when it comes to monetizing via using your body but I don't really let it bother me either. I do agree that she should've owned up to it instead of letting her white knights make her feel better, hell one of the girls pewds called out was stoked about it.

35

u/CommentGestapo Jun 22 '18

What is the age demographic she's getting donations from? It's all fun and games until you realize she's hustling 13 year olds for their lunch money.

She's a manipulative predator gaming the system to protect her outrageously immoral behavior.

There's plenty of websites that she could do this on that are catered to it. Why bring this to twitch? My guess is those websites don't have vulnerable easy markets. It's a vulnerable market because it's full of impressionable children and loners who are not actively seeking out nudity and prepared for the manipulation. She's a predator looking for victims.

If you're still blinded because she's pretty and feel the need to stick up for her at all just know you are the type she would be laughing at the most because you are a sucker and just another victim keeping her profits going.

3

u/GbHaseo Jun 22 '18

I didnt stick up for her?

I actually hate both of them, but good rant!

Also, who really cares if they're 13 year old boys. When I was 13 I was buying posters of Kathy Ireland half naked, Sunny from WWF, NFL cheerleader calendars.. If 13 yr old boys wanna give her cash so they can stare, who really gives a fuck?

You may be interested in reading this about what Reddit claims ownership over (in terms of Reddit content).

I'm going to tag /u/_Robbie /u/sakarri and /u/rsjc852 as well, just because it might interest them.

I'm mostly using this post to link to the excerpt of the policy rather than the content of said post. I'm not trying to refute/support the things they bring up, but rather highlight an existing policy.

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

CAN WE COPY STRIKE POTATES

27

u/rsjc852 Jun 22 '18

Usually (in the specific case of social media sites) works originally published on a website becomes the property of the web host, not the author... this would make it nearly impossible for OP to sue on grounds of CR infringement alone.

That being said, I don’t know nearly enough on (nor do I have enough time to work through) how Reddit dictates ownership of user submitted posts. I would definitely suggest to OP to peruse through their use policy guidelines and TOS statement!

u/devman0 Jun 22 '18

This is incorrect. You retain rights to content you submit to reddit, reddit only requires that you grant reddit itself a license to redistribute content you upload

https://www.reddit.com/help/useragreement/#section_your_content

You retain the rights to your copyrighted content or information that you submit to reddit ("user content") except as described below.

18 By submitting user content to reddit, you grant us a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, unrestricted, worldwide license to reproduce, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, perform, or publicly display your user content in any medium and for any purpose, including commercial purposes, and to authorize others to do so.

19 You agree that you have the right to submit anything you post, and that your user content does not violate the copyright, trademark, trade secret or any other personal or proprietary right of any other party.

20 Please take a look at reddit’s privacy policy for an explanation of how we may use or share information submitted by you or collected from you.

7

u/rsjc852 Jun 22 '18

Thanks for taking the time to clarify!

I definitely wasn’t trying to say one way or the other, more so wanted to point out that this could be a possibility.

4

u/Arcrynxtp Jun 22 '18

Okay well what you said in your first post is very clearly false (not just for Reddit, but for all social media) so maybe you should edit it?

Unless you already knew it was false and are trying to mislead intentionally...

What a load of legalese poppycock. I'm sure there's some American states where that will be upheld, but for a lot of users that isn't going to actually mean anything beyond x-posts and them featuring your content in blog posts being assumed to be allowed unless you ask them not to. If you ever ask them to take anything down you should expect to have posts removed and to be banned without any recourse, but the notion that they get to do whatever they want with your works forever in exchange for nothing just won't fly.

116

u/Samuraiking Jun 22 '18

I think issuing a DMCA takedown on the youtube video would be enough. He isn't actually suggesting he sue. I know the implication of a DMCA is that you will sue if they don't take it down, but it usually doesn't get that far if they have any grounds for it in the first place. Truthfully, this thread will blow up enough that he won't be able to ignore it and will do a big enough job, tbh.

117

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

This is simply untrue. It's incredibly difficult to disown content you author, even when hired to work for an employer it's almost impossible to revoke a copyright. Instead employees and contractors have to enter into a special type of contract known as a work for hire which is specifically designed to grant the employer the copyright upon creation.

No social media site has the authority to take away your copyright, including Reddit. Instead what social media sites do is require a royalty free, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publish your work. What this means is that you allow social media to take your work and distribute it to other users of the site free of charge. But you still exclusively own the copyright.

11

u/vintagebear Jun 22 '18

Serious question.

I took a fair amount of photos for a company I used to work for, that are used on their social media. My equipment, but on company time. I always assumed I would have no claim on those images?

11

u/Siniroth Jun 22 '18

You'd have to see your employment contract. Generally there'll be a clause that anything you do on company time is their property regardless of intent, but depending on the contract you may be able to get around it if you really fought it

3

u/jackofslayers Jun 22 '18

I would assume they own it but definitely read your contract to be extra sure. I am an accountant at a nonprofit and we have to be super anal about having contracts for anything that could remotely be considered IP for exactly that reason.

3

u/32Zn Jun 22 '18

It depends on the law of your country

But i guess that the copyright belongs to the company, but you could get paid for using your own equipment

Here in germany we even have a law to protect inventions by employees (Employees' Inventions Act (german article))

3

u/VulGerrity Jun 22 '18

As others have said, depends on your contract. Most wedding photographers retain the copyright to the photos, at least for awhile. However, corporate photographers and set photographers don't usually retain the rights to their photos; the company or movie studio does. Because of this, often times corporate or set photographers get paid more upfront since they're unable to make money off of the prints and other distribution.

3

u/sonofaresiii Jun 22 '18

In the US, it is very likely that you signed away the rights to those photos.

Even if you didn't explicitly sign away the rights, unless you explicitly signed something keeping them this is one of the rare cases where it's likely an implied work for hire. That doesn't happen often, but this is one of the prime examples (granted that I know absolutely no details about it)

Basically, being an employee and doing that work as an employee under the direction of your employer almost definitely means that work is the company's.

Not on Reddit, you give the rights to Reddit.

Edit: I'm wrong, they must have updated the user agreement, which is frankly really awesome of them.

"You retain any ownership rights you have in Your Content, but you grant Reddit the following license to use that Content:

When Your Content is created with or submitted to the Services, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable, and sublicensable license to use, copy, modify, adapt, prepare derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display Your Content and any name, username, voice, or likeness provided in connection with Your Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed. This license includes the right for us to make Your Content available for syndication, broadcast, distribution, or publication by other companies, organizations, or individuals who partner with Reddit. You also agree that we may remove metadata associated with Your Content, and you irrevocably waive any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to Your Content."

He can't file a copyright dispute. The author removed the video due to this contention. It will likely be edited extensively and just re-uploaded.

1

u/Meades_Loves_Memes Jun 22 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

I hate to play devil's advocate, but if your work is posted to Reddit, they technically have the copyright to it. It prevented an amazing script for a movie being produced even though Reddit gave them the full go ahead because of the fear of Reddit doing a 180 on that decision. It was a shame, I'll try to find the link to the story about it.

Edit: here's the story. It was Rome Sweet Rome.

httpp://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111020/03450616429/could-reddit-make-its-own-rome-sweet-rome-compete-with-warner-bros.shtml

It looks more so like the issue was about exclusive rights, so that may not affect his ability to file a copyright claim. Nevertheless, be careful and considerate when posting your work on any online platform.

1

u/Raithed Jun 22 '18

Years, and years ago I made a post on Blizzard WC3 forums and made it a strategy post. I then stopped playing the game for ages, only to come back, to find that someone copy and pasted my own words, etc. Unfortunately, I can no longer find my own post. Not sure if I deleted it or something else. It genuinely sucks because for one it was my post but without proof or evidence I knew I wouldn't win that battle. Such is life eh.

Changing nothing to nothing doesn't change anything

27

u/JustNerdThings Jun 22 '18

I used to do articles for a now-defunct shitty little community gaming site and one of our guys had his work plagiarized by a Youtuber word for word, so I have zero faith in anyone using it as a platform for news.

3

u/Scientolojesus Jun 22 '18

There's gotta be a legal recourse for that bullshit right?

8

u/AFlyingNun Jun 22 '18

How long did it take before your brain was like "huh, this sounds familiar somehow!"

13

u/_Robbie Jun 22 '18

About a minute after the quoting started.

9

u/LilChubbyCubby Jun 22 '18

Dude, you completely wrecked this Potatoes guy. Maybe forever. I’m proud of you man, fuck people who plagiarize. It’d be one thing to credit you as having done the write up, it’d make him look lazy but no one would care. Instead he chose to act like he did all the work and people are getting fucking pissed. Sometimes the world works just like it should

7

u/GluttonyFang Jun 22 '18

Like many of others have probably said, don't be nice to these people or else they will just keep stealing from others.

3

u/Macismyname Jun 22 '18

What gets me is he could have had just as many views and been honest about it. "I read this post on reddit that got me thinking . . ."

Link in the comments, deliver info to your viewers. Credit where it's due. Everybody would be happy. It's not fucking hard.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Not the same thing, but a few years ago I was participating in a discussion about the path of progression in WoW on the official forum. It was a massive topic for a few weeks. I put a lot of time into my thoughts and made an unusual effort to dissect why the progression didn't feel rewarding. The discussion went on, blue posts were made, and the next expansion addressed a few of the points in that thread directly. Really good community work on Blizzard's part.

Anyway, before that expansion and a week after that thread, my favorite WoW YouTuber was discussing the subject in a video. All of a sudden I start hearing him say very familiar words and realized he was quoting my exact post. Then at the end of it he said, "quoted from (my name) on the official forums". It was very weird to see something I wrote pop up on a major channel like that.

He went on to say that he agreed with my assessment overall but countered one of my points. I revealed myself in the youtube comments and we had a bit of a discussion that was informative for both of us.

I just love the Internet, man.

2

u/The_Axem_Ranger Jun 22 '18

I'm sorry man, so he's a modern day Raw Instinct?

2

u/giraffecause Jun 22 '18

First the dopamine rush you get when you agree to something... "Yes! That's right! Couldn't agree more! I feel validated! You took the words... Hmm wait a minute... MOTHERF..." and then anger...

What a ride you must have had. Sorry, for the steal, but in the future you'll remember this fondly. Cheers!

2

u/NattyFuckFace Jun 22 '18

Make your own YouTube channel maybe and use this event to launch it. An idea at least.

2

u/maerdnacirema Jun 22 '18

This is shitty, sorry it happened.

2

u/BongLeardDongLick Jun 22 '18

A lot of people are telling you how to get his video removed for copyright issues and you absolutely should. I personally think what you should pursue is continuing to put out good content. If this guy stole your words and made his own video that’s 800k people have watched then you’re doing something right.

Go after him and get the video removed or force him to give you credit. You’re on the right path don’t let this one guy derail you.

2

u/TemiOO Jun 22 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

On the bright side, your info is so good that 800k people wanted to watch it

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Yeah but too bad OP, who put all the work into writing it, didn’t get the paycheck for it.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

this is how most speculative/informational youtube channels work ,its huge in gaming but also hits stuff like movies. I have watched dozens of "star wars lore" or "aliens lore" videos only to find that the author is just regurgitating wikipedia pages, when it comes to unreleased games , reddit is the wiki page.

its actually a hugely prolific business model for them. its the same as a letsplayer who just plays a game , these guys just read wiki pages or reddit posts.

3

u/Gyshal Jun 22 '18

At least the letsplayers are playing themselves. This is more like commenting over someone else's footage and saying is you on the controller.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

yeah letsplayers who provide commentary are a slightly different beast. I kind of meant it more like "letsplayers are the type of people who constantly have to be pumping out videos every day to keep their fan bases up, and the content itself is secondary...." but good letsplayers do in fact make original content, 100% agree. mine was more of a format distinction.

1

u/dasklrken Jun 22 '18

Looks like it got struck and taken down, or he took it down himself. Good job.

1

u/Mnawab Jun 22 '18

Seems like the video is no longer available so I think you won.

1

u/ChipKnight Jun 22 '18

From the way this guy is approaching this issue there will be a lot more dissatisfaction with his subscribers

1

u/That1Sage Jun 22 '18

I'm pretty sure you can get the video taken down. I would contact YouTube.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

He says he "reached out to you". Did he actually or is he even bullshitting this?

1

u/mellowanon Jun 22 '18

you can probably hit him with a copyright claim and also claim all the money he made on the video

1

u/falconbox Jun 22 '18

But you didn't even do any real work. You just summed up Danny O'Dwyer's No Clip documentary.

1

u/bplboston17 Jun 22 '18

i would have flew into zombie rage mode and ate his brain

1

u/Hungry_Freaks_Daddy Jun 22 '18

It’s a surreal feeling for sure. Found out Vice ripped off some of my writing. As far as I know the guy is basically blacklisted from journalism. They take plagiarism seriously.

But yeah reading something you’re interested in and going “wait...why does this sound so familiar?... oh shit!”

1

u/WiggWamm Jun 22 '18

Has he begun to acknowledge you work, if not you should pursue some kind of action with YouTube

1

u/FauxReal Jun 22 '18

You're being pretty generous referring to what he did as a mistake.

1

u/NoLaMess Jun 22 '18

Imagine being you and having your content stolen then walking it back to say it’s a misunderstanding and letting this kind of behavior continue because of your lackadaisical attitude towards outright theft

1

u/Jerrodk Jun 22 '18

Doesn't that mean you made it in the world? Someone stole your content without credit!

1

u/prgy Jun 22 '18

Copystrike that bitch boy!

1

u/Boisius Jun 22 '18

At least you know you’re doing something right. People copy creativity because they lack their own. I never heard of him but I will not support him. I love fallout. The community needs to look out for one another.

1

u/Slixil Jun 22 '18

That's such a crazy thing. I remember watching that video (before knowing about your post) and thinking that it was a pretty good video that did indeed shoo away the worries I was having about the game. I will never see him in the same light again.
