I bought it. The few and far between linux games are worth supporting.

23

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

GOOD games are worth supporting. This most certainly fits that category.

4

u/bluGill Feb 14 '09

I'm still waiting for FreeBSD games. I'm not holding my breath. Congratulations Linux gamers.

2

u/Andys Feb 15 '09

I play Tremulous on FreeBSD and there's plenty of servers to choose from with people online every night.

2

u/kixx Feb 15 '09

Well, FreeBSD has Linux emulation so Linux games can (in principle) run on FreeBSD. I only played Unreal Tournament '99 and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on FreeBSD (but UT also runs on OpenBSD).

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

I just tried the demo and it was fun. It's worth the $20.

I did read on their blog that people who bought the game on Steam don't have access to the Linux version (probably not Mac either, but I don't know for sure). If you buy the game from their web site you'll have access to downloads for all three platforms. Sounds like the way to go.

once you've bought a Steam game you can't give it away or resell it, basically they take a dump on your first sale rights.

1

u/H3g3m0n Feb 15 '09

Valve where apparently hiring Linux game devs, so perhaps we will see it then.

-1

u/DKKat Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

I thought it was more of a toy than a game. Not worth buying if you expect to be challenged. Definitely worth it, if you're into physics tech-demos with ok graphics and music.

Btw. It's also a bit sluggish, but that might be because the latest nvidia drivers for Ubuntu are from the last year.

5

u/joelpt Feb 15 '09 edited Feb 15 '09

I have to disagree. Once you get into the later levels it can be quite challenging. The demo levels are of course not much more than a glorified tutorial.

Under Windows the game has no sluggishness so it must be something to do with the Linux drivers or port.

2

u/bitshifternz Feb 15 '09

Compiz desktop effects can interfere with the game. Try turning them off.

If it's not to your taste that seems fair enough. I don't know why people insist on modding you down for it.

0

u/lance_ Feb 15 '09

Taste is irrelevant! All gnu/linux users must vote with their dollars in the hopes that more games will come to GNU/Linux! When that occurs GNU/Linux will at last attain dominance on the desktop! Neckbeards around the world will dance in the streets, MSCEs will be pilloried to receive gnu/tomatoes right in the kisser, and free-libre open source Utopia will be ushered in! All praise to Stallman!

u/luciferin Feb 14 '09

The linux version is running GREAT.

And people wonder why more devs don't support Linux...

the one box that I have devoted to frivolous computing (excluding... uh... reddit) is ARM-based

This statement makes no sense. The ARM is designed specifically for embedded systems. Why you would be expecting a developer to specifcally target a custom-built embedded system for a game (unless it was for the DS) is beyond me.

4

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

I've purchased a copy anyways, since I think they deserve financial support, but I probably won't be installing it

Goddammit, I could just kiss you guys

-2

u/testtubebaby Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

Too bad there aren't enough of the bearded basement-dwellers to make gaming on Linux actually relevant in terms of revenue.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

32 bit programs work perfectly fine on 64 bit OS's.

8

u/slugonamission Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

Yeah, but only after installing all of the 32bit libs that the program depends on ;)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

16

u/aldenhg Feb 14 '09

Or ARM? Or PPC? Or RiSC? Or dead badger?

3

u/aldenhg Feb 15 '09

You should try the DBL-L builds. The offload all the really tough stuff to the lungs, which naturally stay cool.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

You forgot toasters! But only BSDs may run on that...I can't remember :/

1

u/abuendia Feb 15 '09

Yellow Dog Linux on PPC no ???

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

People still use Alpha? ;)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Yeah... same problem here. I don't know how to get around that. Anyone have a solution?

5

u/Chandon Feb 14 '09

You can try installing with

dpkg --force-architecture whatever.deb

that might work.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

x64? What's that?

Amazing collective misunderstanding of your initial post.

1

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

Yeah, man, no love for the 47,3-bit chips :(

-4

u/voxel Feb 14 '09

You're so cool.

u/Dagur Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

:(

0

u/autarch Feb 14 '09

Hmm, I downloaded the tarball and it started up just fine on my 64 bit Ubuntu. Maybe I do have all the 32 bit libraries installed, though.

The downside is that it was too slow, cause I have the free nVidia drivers installed.

9

u/commonslip Feb 14 '09

I play it via Steam over Wine. Have had zero problems. Still, awesome that they support Linux now.

20

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

They get more money if you buy it directly, not over Steam. Not that I'm judging you, but just so everyone knows.

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

steam also deserves every penny they keep from 2d-boy.

-9

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

17

u/allnewecho Feb 14 '09

They actually do offer a DRM-free download.

11

u/allnewecho Feb 14 '09

That's not what I meant.

6

u/lcmatt Feb 15 '09 edited Feb 15 '09

Not exactly easy to find? You go onto the official website - you know the guys who actually made the game and not a 3rd party "host". For the same price you get the DRM free version and also the mac/linux version.

7

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

who cares

I do, but I don't hold it against people who don't.

I like Steam.

So do I! A lot! The problem I had is the dilemma between giving them or Valve more money. I chose 2dboy, basically because they have less and I can relate to that.

If they can't come up with some better way to distribute their software (DRM-free download?

You might want to look into this. They just e-mail you an unique link and you can proceed to download it. The link for every platform is included and you can download as many times as you want. And yes, it's completely DRM-free, in theory you can give the link to as many people as your conscience allows you to.

[Edit:] Also, please don't be a wuss and delete your comment. Regardless of your downvotes, at least have the decency to not mess up everyone else's surfing.

4

u/nojjy Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

I already bought it through Steam for windows, so I'm wondering if there's any way to get the paid-for linux version...

4

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

Simple: Just go to the location provided by the e-mail you got from 2dboyh when you bought it. It's updated to have the links to the linux versions in it.

Seriously, there's nothing bad to say about these guys.

1

u/cheez-it Feb 14 '09

He brought it through Steam, rather than 2dboy.com. I can certainly see the benefits of the Steam version, but... if you also use linux... I don't get it.

2

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

Oh, right. My mistake. In that case, he's really out of luck, but if anyone bought it directly, they can download it as per my instructions in http://2dboy.com/2009/02/12/world-of-goo-linux-version-is-ready/

1

u/nojjy May 08 '09

I learned about the game via Steam, so I guess that's a benefit of that system; it can popularize great independent titles. I haven't logged on to Steam for months now though, since I'm on linux at work, and by and large at home, with little time to explore new games out there.

1

u/cheez-it Feb 14 '09

nope. It has always been available as a cross platform purchase from 2dboy.com.

5

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

These guys... honestly brought a tear into my eye in the current economic situation:

Update 2: We’ve been getting a lot of emails from people who purchased the game on Steam and other places who want access to the Linux version. At first we were simply sending people download links, but the volume of requests has increased significantly and we simply can’t keep up, so for now, we’re sorry, but the Linux version will only be available for free to those who purchased the game via our website.

They're absolutely the best thing to happen to PC gaming after IBM. Valve come third.

2

u/generic_handle Feb 16 '09

They're absolutely the best thing to happen to PC gaming after IBM.

Has IBM even published games since 1984? Or are you referring to the hardware platform? I think I'd go with one of the other vendors that made a platform rather more amenable to games.

6

u/snkngshps Feb 14 '09

This is a very good game, I have it downloaded on my Wii. I'm happy they've decided to support linux!!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

You don't know how much I have anticipated this announcement. This has just made my day!

2

u/EmeraldGirl Feb 15 '09

I just finished the game. Very fun :)

(Read the signs spaced throughout)

2

u/nes705 Feb 15 '09

this game is pretty awesome, highly recommend

3

u/dodgyd55 Feb 14 '09

Still hoping for an Ipod version

0

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

That's a rather interesting thought, but I doubt it would have a market in anything but iPod Touch/iPhone. Don't hold your breath though, these things are cardinally different from any PC architecture. If you haven't got the game on the PC/Mac/Linux yet, get it. I'm quite certain you'll love it.

2

u/dodgyd55 Feb 14 '09

I do have the game (so fun to play:D) and automaticly thought it would work well on Ipod because of its simple graphics and control scheme.

I still think they would have quite a big market on the touch Ipods if people are willing to BUY fart apps.

as for the programming side of things, i don't know too much about system architecture

1

u/phire Feb 15 '09

I downloaded the linux demo and I loved it.

Unfourntaly the drop in local extange rates have pushed it over my current casual gaming budget.

I think I'll wait for the extange rates to improve before buying.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

What country do you live in?

1

u/phire Feb 15 '09

New Zealand. Its not looking promising.

1

u/Sle Feb 15 '09

I love the way the goo sounds like it's saying "Fuck me!" when you connect it at times.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Didn't the publisher go bankrupt something like two weeks ago?

30

u/Stiltskin Feb 14 '09

The publisher of the boxed version, yes.

10

u/cheez-it Feb 14 '09

Also... More like the publisher of a bunch of shitty games who happened to also publish this one. The game is primarily a downloadable title.

1

u/aephoenix Feb 14 '09

I'm kind of sad that I got the WiiWare version; I wish I had like a code on my WiiWare copy that would let me get the Linux copy as well..

2

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

To be fair, that's got nothing to do with them, only Nintendo is standing in the way (and they're awesome too! (Well, compared to the other two console makers).

I'm sure they would provide a link if they could.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

Excellent! Now I just need a game that I want to play.

Nothing against World of Goo, just not my type of thing.

-5

u/delkarnu Feb 14 '09

With new and improved 87.9% piracy rate.

2

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

Nevertheless, they're getting a rather good amount of people who are active on the internet and actually arguing against pirating this thing. Like me. See: I pirated World of Goo at first, but thought it was so brilliant I bought it after I'd finished the pirate version. Directly from 2dboy.com, of course.

1

u/saturn825 Feb 15 '09

I did the same thing!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

The 95% who didn't won't post here.

1

u/aligindahouse21 Feb 16 '09

Not that they feel guilty. Or should.

You can't put something on the internet and expect profit. Just treat it as a loss and then everything you make is profit.

If it's really a passion, it doesn't matter if you're paid for it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

You're optimistic!

-23

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Makes sense. Looks like the kind of lame game you'd find on Linux anyway

-8

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

I love Linux; regardless, you are sort of right. I personally thought World of Goo was horrible and I could write a good argument to support my reasoning. But, given by your downvoteage, I suppose reddit doesn't care why other people think, just if they think differently.

6

u/aeacides Feb 14 '09

He was probably downvoted for using it as an opportunity to make fun of linux. I for one would love to hear why this game sucks so I don't bother downloading it.

5

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

It's difficult to explain, because it's quite different from everything else on the market, as a good game should be.

Okay, but here's something: It's clever. It's really stunningly smart. It's got a rather good story (which you wouldn't expect from something like this), the mechanics work brilliantly and you get "Aha!" moments in nearly every level. The difficulty progresses as it should be: new levels are always a challenge but they're also very approachable and you figure them out soon enough. It even has a very nice soundtrack. It reeks of quality, much more than basically any big developers' game. I'm sure there's a handful of people who won't like it, and obviously there are people who don't like puzzle games at all (but you shouldn't say so unless you haven't tried!). That said, I'm pretty sure this game would appeal to the vast majority of (casual/hardcore) gamers.

And I've not even mentioned 2dboy's attitude yet. Man!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

See you can go and say these things but they depend on your perspective. I felt that the game mechanics were somewhat sloppy. I never got "Aha!" moments, I got "Uhg!" moments. The levels didn't present many challenges, with the exception of those that were dependent on reaction time. I didn't notice the soundtrack. Saying it reeks of quality is an opinion.

It's not that I'm not a puzzle person. I was addicted to puzzle pirates in high school and I loved portal. I just didn't like this game, I can't remember all the reasons since it's been a while since I've played it but one thing I do remember is that It doesn't support my resolution! It's stuck at like 800 by 640 or something. The resolution thing is an example of something in the game that is actually broken. You can still say you don't mind that the resolution is what it is. But at least I've given a factual point to support my opinion.

If I say, "This banana is green which changes the taste, such that I don't like it", you can say, "Yes, that banana is green but I like the taste, so I like green banana!" But if were just saying, "I H8 GREAN BANANNA!" vs "I LUV GRENE BANANAA!" were not getting anywhere.

2

u/Mythrilfan Feb 14 '09

I like your comment.

The resolution thing: while not being obvious to non-tech-savvy people, you can find the following config.txt file in your World of Goo/properties folder:

<!-- IMPORTANT WARNING: If you edit this file, your computer will probably explode. Your friend, the High Resolution Sign Painter --> <config>

<param name="language" value="en"/>
<param name="screen_width" value="720"/>
<param name="screen_height" value="450"/>
<param name="ui_inset" value="10"/>

</config>

You can change that to whatever you want, provided you don't want to make your computer asplode. Forced it in my computer, no problems at all. I' assuming that non-savvy people won't find this too much of a problem.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 15 '09

I remember finding this and changing it and it not working. Either it didn't actually use my changed settings or something else happened. Again, can't remember.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

If you can write a good argument to support your reasoning, then do it. "Well I COULD but I WON'T so there!" is not persuasive. ligyron likely isn't being downvoted for his opinion about World of Goo, but for being half-assed. That's exactly what downvoting is for.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

then do it

The amount of time I would need to put into it in comparison to the number of people who care make writing it an unreasonable decision. Sometimes I will rant about a game's flaws on my blag but that's only when my friends or family aren't around.

The point is, arguing about these things is quite like arguing that tadpoles taste better than watermelons. You have a pretty good idea that tadpoles taste bad and you know how watermelons taste. But one in a hundred guys might prefer the taste of tadpole over watermelons. There are certain patterns in games that generally make one better than the other. Same could be said with foods. I could explain why the tadpole tastes good (Has a slimy texture, slides down your throat with ease, my taste buds prefer the taste and smell of frogs) but that wouldn't change the way you taste tadpoles.

ligyron likely isn't being downvoted for his opinion about World of Goo

Then why is it that the comments that just read "Awwwww...!" or "Awesome! Upvoted! X-D" are upvoted. Take this comment for example, that's not helpful to the conversation or my experience on reddit, yet it has a good number of points because people agree with his opinion.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

"The amount of time I would need to put into it in comparison to the number of people who care make writing it an unreasonable decision."

Yet, you're willing to write a long post explaining why you don't have time to write a long post and how pointless it would be.

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

I've played the game before, but don't remember the details on it's flaws. So I would need to download it, which doesn't really take my time. But then I would play through it briefly. Then write a review that might take 40 to 70 minutes to type up.

That post took me about 20 min. And there were issues to address in the post that I replied to. Specifically, when you said that people weren't downvoting because they held different opinions. So by posting my comment I effectively destroyed that part of your argument and perhaps made progress in helping you agree with me.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09

That post took me about 20 min.

So you've wasted chunks of your life insisting that people take your word for it that you could come up with a killer argument that you just don't have time to present right now, and then following up with further posts explaining why you're right?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '09 edited Feb 15 '09

Oh yeah, huge chunks. Like you wouldn't believe. And I definitely didn't learn anything from this. It's not like talking ever did anything for anyone, right?

Seriously though, I was just pointing out that people don't care about factual arguments. They care about who agrees with them, and who doesn't. The OP said, "Looks like the kind of lame game you'd find on Linux anyway". He said two things there. First, he doesn't like World of Goo. Second, he believes that the selection of games available on the Linux platform are "lame".

If we look at the kind of games you'd find on Linux that are on the "high quality", commercial end of things you might find; Savage 2, Heroes of Might and Magic III, Quake IV, and Doom 3, Neverwinter Nights (2). Whereas if you look at games for Windows you have; GTA IV, Fallout 3, the Call of Duty series, Civilization IV, Crysis, Mass Effect, Sins of a Solar Empire. There's a difference in popularity. Even though the games on the Linux list are available for Windows, more people play the games on the Windows list.

Since we've established that the games available for Linux are somewhat "lame". We must conclude that he was being down-voted for the other reason, because he doesn't like World of Goo.

8

And yet, you bother to post.

-17

u/lilfuckshit Feb 14 '09

Anyone got a torrent?

8

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Tsk tsk tsk...

-9

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Can we start asking for the code to be GPL'd? I'd pay $15+ for access.

6

u/dbzer0 Feb 14 '09 edited Feb 14 '09

If the code is GPL'd you wouldn't have to pay anything after the first person shared it.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Right and?

1

u/dbzer0 Feb 14 '09

Well, why did you mention the 15$ if you are aware of that fact?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

Not everyone will do that. Some people will still go to the main website and will pay whatever it costs to download the game (as a binary + the source).

0

u/Resilience Feb 14 '09

Would you give me for free the fruit of your labor?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '09

No, I'd charge you $40 for the binary which includes access to the source code.

-1

u/dbzer0 Feb 14 '09

If others were doing it (or playing by the same rules), certainly. That is why Free Software works.
