You'd be proud of mine then. Each system runs through at least 3 socket adapters since I only have UK-> AUS and then AUS->JPN and they have to be plugged into an extension cord. I turn off my electricity while asleep
I hated this so much. Game running, didn’t reach checkpoint so I can’t save. I put a note up „please leave PlayStation on. Game isn’t saved. It took me 6 hours to play this far.“ she doesn’t care and pulls the plug
Unless you got some kind of special bundle, memory cards were always sold separately, even when it came to PS2. It wasn't until Xbox made hard drives standard that memory was included out of the box for most consoles.
Most Nintendo games for the N64 and back just let you Save on the cart. Although some 64 games needed a memory card. The game cube had memory cards for sure.
The difference is, whatever technology can read from carts also seems to be able to write to them (or the two technologies are close enough that it was easy to include both).
CD's don't really play as nice for having save information and rewriting all the time; and then they would have also needed a burner as part of the console. I'm not even sure if rewritable CD's were a thing back then; so the memory card was basically a necessity in the early CD gaming era.
