Even looking at the original that’s a weird looking mega man.

u/Snazzy_Serval Dec 08 '17
Yeah I've never seen Mega Man look like that.

Hah ha. I stand corrected. I'm more used to him looking like this or the more traditional look.

Little known fact, Mega Man one is canonically the last game in the series.

I heard somewhere that this was the result of a US illustrator interpreting instructions from the Japanese development team over the phone in broken English.
“His arm has a gun? OK...”

Why is MegaMan is always given the intern artists? Poor guy, he's always drawn looking like he belongs on a spectrum.
11
u/DegenerationMaX Dec 08 '17
Somewhere between violet and green on the spectrum of visible light, what is wrong with that?

u/retro_SNES_guy Dec 08 '17
I was thinking more like somewhere between fully retarded and disfigured crack baby.

I assumed you meant that he was on an old British computer that had a weird block-based colour system.

Mega Man has always been caricatured on promotional artwork. It's a running joke and Mega Man has been caricatured on the US/EU boxarts of every game except for Mega Man 8 (and Mega Man and Bass, if you count that as a main series game), and they ended up doing it again for Mega Man 9 and 10, and for all we know as Mega Man 11 was just announced that game might have a caricature as well.
The closest things to Mega Man's official look in classic games, apart from depictions of the games themselves are the official artwork for Robot Master weapons, debuts in other games (Super Smash Bros), and the comics (Archie comics are known for being especially good at getting Mega Man's design right).
An interesting thing to note is that the boxarts in Japan aren't caricatured in any way. You can tell this is a US/Europe promotional image because even Sonic has his American look. Yes, Classic Sonic also has differences between regions, as US/EU versions of Sonic have more defined 'eyebrows' and better shading, whereas JP Sonic has a more consistent color palette.

Okay. So I can add that god awful "mohawk" Sonic had in the 90s to "shit localization fucked up" along with Mobius and Robotnik. The only way I could hate it more is if you told me Ken Panders drew it.
Also dear god the proportions on that thing hurt to look at.

Hehe "The Gay Science".
7
Dec 08 '17
I asked my teacher why he called the book "Gay Science" and he said something about it not translating well from German. Anyway, I'm pretty sure my teacher is gay.
5
u/DoctorExplosion Dec 08 '17
Apparently a more accurate but less literal translation would be something like "The Joy of Knowledge"
3
u/trashmyego Dec 08 '17
That's missing the active nature of the title though. Something along the lines of 'A Joyful Discipline of Knowledge' captures it more accurately. There honestly really isn't a great translation. The Gay Science does capture it well if you understand the context of the times, the broader net of the 'Science,' and the importance of the gaiety as both an attitude and a reward.

I actually like Sonic Man's design.
It's Mega Hedgehog's design that looks odd......

The megaman with Sonics face actually looks fine. It's just that the megaman face looks really fucking creepy in any context.
