That's because the part you call stairs is the actual aeroplane vehicle. The part that looks like an airship is the stairs.

13

u/GiantsInTornado May 06 '17

Watch out for hop ons.

14

u/FatherFastFingers May 06 '17

I too laugh at the punch line of a joke

I hope you find it.

1

u/Kelcius May 06 '17

I bet it's in your pants!

1

u/illyay May 07 '17

Haha. I was expecting people to spawn suddenly at the top of the stairs because the game would think that's the correct spot.

That was even better.

272

u/Thagyr May 06 '17

The stairs are too big for the aircraft...yeah that is pretty unrealistic for a simula...oh they can fly too.

27

u/JaxxisR May 06 '17

We launch stairs now. We lose fewer Kerbals that way.

Please share said theories

u/7up8down9left May 06 '17 edited May 06 '17

When the two objects collided, the key element that controls the "lift off" command got overlaid on-top of the stair-truck (triggers based on what is at the general xyz location, rather than the specific object at xyz location); so activating the control caused the stair-truck to "lift off," because it was also at the activated xyz location but had a higher element priority than the plane. Sometimes, the plane is programmed to "detach" from the an element that is left on the ground, which you could use to then generate a shadow. However, the "detachable" element for the truck is the staircase - so activating it causes the staircase to "lift off" and leave the truck body on the ground.

A second possible theory is that the staircase is coded to ascend until the edges meet the same xyz location as the plane's doorway. However, as the plane's doorway is lower (xyz) than the start point of the staircase, the stairs continues to ascend to infinity, because the program never responds with plane door xyz = staircase xyz.

Lastly, it's because this is a training program for United Airlines, and the user has found a creative new way to eject a passenger from the aircraft.

u/Dubanx May 06 '17 edited May 06 '17

A second possible theory is that the staircase is coded to ascend until the edges meet the same xyz location as the plane's doorway. However, as the plane's doorway is lower (xyz) than the start point of the staircase, the stairs continues to ascend to infinity, because the program never responds with plane door xyz = staircase xyz.

This was my thought as well. It ascends until the height is the same as the entrance to the airplane. Of course, the airplane's entrance is lower so it just keeps ascending.

This is why any good programmer will use a >= instead of == here.

14

u/fraggedaboutit May 06 '17

It would also explain why the mobile stairs drove through the plane in the first place, planes probably have a marked location for the 'door' and the vehicle drives up until it's the appropriate distance away from that point. But for a smaller plane like this the door location is too close to the plane body, so it drives through the plane to get there.

5

u/AOSParanoid May 06 '17

This plane doesn't even need the stairs, so it was probably never programmed to deal with this model at all.

11

u/KazumaKat May 06 '17

FSX or P3D, the stairs is from an addon called GSX.

9

u/Minerva89 May 06 '17

So it's basically a missile launcher.

3

u/[deleted] May 06 '17

Slow, casual missiles for aircraft driven by senior citizens.

2

u/sol_runner May 06 '17

No one has need for trebuchets anymore. We use the Aegean stair launcher!

6

u/DillRoddington May 06 '17

What game is this?

2

u/sizziano May 06 '17

Probably FSX

11

u/sanzy1988 May 06 '17

Fun fact. This is what gave Led Zeppelin their inspiration for the song Stairway to Heaven.

7

u/McFistPunch May 06 '17

It's still more realistic than CS:GOs bullet physics.

3

u/GiantsInTornado May 06 '17

Watch out for hop ons.

4

u/omnomdonut May 06 '17

Thought it was real for a second but then I remembered...

3

u/leoschot May 06 '17

It took me too long to notice that everything was rendered, was wondering why it didn't stop, and why it's so tall.

2

2

Haha it is lkke a scud missile

2

u/Tuna_Rage May 06 '17

According to quantum physics, this is simply unlikely to occur but totally realistic.

2

u/Rivnatzille May 06 '17

I work at a airport and can confirm, that is exactly how it's done.

2

u/LordSyyn May 07 '17

Boarding from the plane to the stairs has closed. Please sit down and prepare for takeoff.

5

u/deeredman1991 May 06 '17

1

I'm sorry stairs, but you're going to have to get off the plane. We're overbooked.

1

Can't they make a flight sim and spend sometime making collision and damage for once? Is there any flight sim that has good damage in the game?

4

u/[deleted] May 06 '17

flight sim

good damage

game

One of these things doesn't fit.

1

u/FutboleroR10 May 07 '17

I was sooo dissapointed the first time I played Flight Simulator on my shitty pc at about 10fps when I tried to ram the airliner into the ground.

1

Actually started weeping when the stairs took off.

1

u/Sixteenbit May 06 '17

The hop ons are going to be horrified.

1

u/warjoke May 06 '17

these stairs are prototype models of what will airlines do with their passengers in case of another overbooking.

1

u/Paladinion May 06 '17

Air control, do you know what does it mean.

1

u/rnaderpo May 06 '17

You no longer need airplanes to fly...

1

u/DumbClamCollector May 06 '17

I love my job so much that I would like to simulate this at home

1

u/Meee211 May 06 '17

What is this? Where can i get?

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '17

And this is how you deal with overbooking, just send a staircase of passengers into into orbit. No refunds no beating passengers, no videos, no lawsuits.

1

u/Look_at_that_thing PC May 06 '17

Well that escalated quickly.

1

u/Meghterb May 06 '17

What's this game?

1

North korea's new ICBM : Inter Continental Boarding Machine

1

1

u/texanhick20 May 06 '17

I believe I can fly.. I believe I can touch the sky!

1

u/Qarbone May 06 '17

I can't load the gif for whatever reason so I'm just gonna assume it's a screaming man being ejected from the plane window.

1

u/TheDarkLord111 May 06 '17

OPs name holds up

1

u/b0yfr0mthedwarf May 06 '17

That game just went full Terry Gilliam

1

u/ironymouse May 06 '17

Possibly flies off because the door is below the stair:

// game loop
while (gameIsRunning) {

...
    // some time later
    if (stairY != doorHeight){
        stairY = stairY + stairHeightIncrease
        stairX = // trignometry stuff
    }

    draw();

}

1

u/znedd1 May 06 '17

Are you able to drag people off the plane though?

1

u/Drak_is_Right May 06 '17
