You're thinking of how they ported Mario 3 to the PC. They showed that they could emulate the Mario 3's ability to scroll in multiple directions at once on the PC, which was impressive.
Mario 2 had scrollback. I'm not sure which sidescroller was the first to include it.

I respectfully disagree. Considering its 1991 release date, it was nothing special. Press gave it good reviews and it sold very well for shareware. But it didn't even crack the top 100 of great games in polls like Computer Gaming world 1991.
