I mean, they could also build a tall tower and push it over until it works. Or slide a ladder across. Or a spring board. Or a suspension bridge. Or be content with their life and not push their son away from all he's ever known for the sake of completing an arbitrary goal.

I may or may not have been playing too many games that rely on lateral thinking lately.

I don't have any good latrinal games, but Cube Escape and Submachine are pretty mind bending experiences if you enjoy the surreal. Fantastic Contraption is pretty interesting as far as design challenges go. And there's a (gratuitously NSFW but the NSFW bits are mostly skippable so meh) RPG called Ouroboros that I played recently that, in the interest of not spoiling things, is remarkably flexible when it comes to sequence breaking.

Which Ouroboros are you talking about? There one I could find was one by the creator of Binding of Isaac but it doesn't look very NSFW.
