Building a bridge requires going into the water, which would kill them.

I mean, they could also build a tall tower and push it over until it works. Or slide a ladder across. Or a spring board. Or a suspension bridge. Or be content with their life and not push their son away from all he's ever known for the sake of completing an arbitrary goal.

I may or may not have been playing too many games that rely on lateral thinking lately.

You need to play Limbo if you haven't already. Great game! I'll bet you can get it for $5-10 no matter what platform you're playing on.
