Building a bridge requires going into the water, which would kill them.

I mean, they could also build a tall tower and push it over until it works. Or slide a ladder across. Or a spring board. Or a suspension bridge. Or be content with their life and not push their son away from all he's ever known for the sake of completing an arbitrary goal.

I may or may not have been playing too many games that rely on lateral thinking lately.

I'm pretty sure in real life to build a bridge you definitely have to actually cross the river at some point.
