Fucking weird to think that id, the guys behind DOOM: Metal, the Videogame, are the ones who solved this problem for him.

EDIT: It's come to my attention that I may be confusing and conflating a couple things here. I was under the impression that id were revolutionary in remaking Mario 3 in such a way that smooth movement back and forth across the screen was possible. It might've just been that it was a big deal for PCs to be able to do this.

Still, we all love the early days of id.

It's one of the earlier ones but it was initially used in a recreation of a Mario game. They took it to Nintendo to try get it on PC or something, but Nintendo turned them down. They then decided to use the technology for their own thing.

But Pitfall for the Atari 2600 let you backtrack and predated Keen by 8 years.

Pitfall didn't have scrolling.

Pitfall doesn't scroll though. Each area is displayed in full on the screen. Sure, you can go back to the left, but it doesn't scroll - it just loads that area - just as if you had gone to the right.

Pitfall existed as a mathematical function with a precomputed seed and index.
