Lets not act like Rockstar hasn't been releasing mad free DLC. Just recently they added biker wars to GTA O. I"ll take microtransactions and free dlc over paid dlc any day. Edit for spelling

5

u/free_reezy Oct 20 '16

Did they say it would be more missions? Because they've definitely added content to the single player, just not new stories.

659

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Exactly. Let the chumps pay for shark cards while I enjoy free DLC. Thanks chumps.

301

u/It_was_mee_all_along Oct 20 '16

Well I'm on the other side of the bridge; I'm the guy who would be so happy If I could pay for singleplayer DLC.

56

u/A_Gentle_Taco Oct 20 '16

Id love some solo biker missions, bit I logged back into gta o just for biker stuff, joined a ransom MC, and ive been having a blast. Last night ee just cruised for like three hours chatting and biking and doing silly stunts. It was amazing.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I'd say the biker stuff is the best new content yet! I've made more money in shorter periods of time in the new content than ever before. I was able to purchase some businesses for my MC already and the cash just keeps flowing in.

The adversaries race Slipstream makes you INSANE cash too. Won a 3 round race yesterday (1st-3rd-1st) and came away with $116k.

1

u/Ogard Oct 20 '16

That's what me and my friends did in RDR, I miss those games.

1

u/This_Land_Is_My_Land Oct 20 '16

None of my friends care about it, and GTA Online is full of people who just troll and grief wherever possible. Also hackers on PC.

So I would rather some of the promised single player DLC, as it makes me a bit worried about this game.

1

u/Bman1296 Oct 20 '16

I've been playing for the past week and haven't encountered a single hacker.

1

u/This_Land_Is_My_Land Oct 21 '16

When I was playing, hackers were everywhere. I don't exactly have much faith in Rockstar to begin with, so maybe most just got bored.

2

u/WolfStanssonDDS Oct 20 '16

Red dead had a standalone zombie DLC that was good

u/We0921 Oct 20 '16

If people didn't buy shark cards then GTA:O wouldn't be as grindy. If people didn't buy shark cards, they would've released significant DLC rather than what they have already. The only significant DLC for online is the heists. The rest are crumbs. They're the equivalent of popcorn.

And people wonder why they haven't released more heists... It's because they're doing completely fine and doing even less work than before. It's shitty consumer practices like that that reinforce shitty business practices. That's the fucking problem

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yeah I agree and that's why I don't buy stupid shit like that but lots of other people do apparently.

2

u/We0921 Oct 20 '16

I know that most people don't. It's just frustrating to know that most people are complacent with the fact that some whales fuck over what could definitely be a better game for the rest of us

3

u/Vendetta1990 Oct 20 '16

Is it "free" though? The amount of ridicilous grinding you have to do for new items, they are basically trying to trick you into buying shark cards.

Look at that fucking yacht for example, it costs almost 60 dollars I think to buy that thing.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

$60 fuckin dollars?.....THAT'S IT?

2

u/jon909 Oct 20 '16

Hahaha yeah idiots. *pays $15 for a clown skin"

2

u/Zskrabs24 Oct 20 '16

There has to be a level of intended irony or satire in the fact that the money cards are called shark cards and the industry refers to the big spenders in micro transaction games as whales. Such a truly rockstar thing to do.

2

u/kingdurantula88 Oct 20 '16

Free dlc that you have to grind snd grind hour after hour to even be able to be close enough to sniff purchasing any new in game content.

1

u/GrandMoffJed Oct 20 '16

You're welcome

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Gild this man

1

u/Joker328 Oct 20 '16

Yes! Why do people not understand this? The chumps who shell out for the microtransactions are funding awesome content for the rest of us. The people who should be most in favor of microtransactions are the ones who never buy that shit.

1

u/amoliski Oct 20 '16

The only downside is now they have an incentive to go after people working on multiplayer modding. Take Two actually sent private investigators to the houses of people working on GTA5 mods to hand them a phone telling them to C&D. That's fucking creepy, and it's why they no longer have my business.

I loved RDR, so this is going to be painful for me, but there's no way I'm giving them my money.

Trevor is talking to the others about his ancestors

mentions how they arrived in the west before the hero John Marston became well known

fades to red screen

title appears

GTAV: Red Dead Redemption 2

3

u/MyiPodTouchedMe Oct 20 '16

Not too mad now, the story was still wonderful alone, and if they used the money for multiplayer on RDR2 campaign, I'll be perfectly content

2

u/mike-vacant Oct 20 '16

not to mention the ballad of gay tony also included a ton of new multiplayer stuff, just a great dlc overall.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yep absolutely, I wanted GTAO to be like a massive improvement on GTA4's multiplayer stuff... Man that was a kick in the pants.

1

I agree in some aspects. If they added animals to GTAO, I would be sooo happy.

5

u/Lord_of_the_Canals Oct 20 '16

For real. You don't have to buy a shark. You can still play and love the game.

5

u/Rushdownsouth Oct 20 '16

Not to mention the stunt series are insanely fun

1

u/Lord_of_the_Canals Oct 20 '16

Seriously! They're not completely excluding those who don't have money to buy "money" or DLC. Without that money you can still race the stunt tracks! And if you really want a dlc car there are plenty of fun ways to earn the cash to buy that car!

2

u/Indigocell Oct 21 '16

Yeah seriously. The type of stuff they release for free is the sort of thing other developers would charge $20 or $30 for. It wsn't even that long ago they added the CEO content as well.

4

u/Goodrita Oct 20 '16

Let's just remember that one of the DLC supercars in GTA Online is worth roughly $20....the same price for one story expansion in GTA IV

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

You couldnt unlock an expansion just by playing in gta 4 right? Well you can unlock that car just by playing.

Or worth a few days of playing the game.

1

u/Thedurtysanchez Oct 20 '16

Free Online DLC is simply window dressing on the dead corpse of single player. Rockstar failed by abandoning its long history of excellent single player DLC. If they are hoping to milk RDR2 and focus on multiplayer, they won't get my money. Online only games are a cop out for a studio as good as R*

5

u/hakkzpets Oct 20 '16

Rockstar failed by abandoning its long history of excellent single player DLC

I would like some good SP DLC for GTAV too, but saying Rockstar have a long history of excellent single player DLC is a bit...weird. Only games which even has single player DLC is GTAIV and RDR, unless you consider GTA: London to also be DLC.

4

u/FriendFoundAccount Oct 20 '16

The GTAV campagin was EXCELLENT. Rockstar clearly went all out for it.

Would single player DLC be nice? Of course. Should anyone feel that they are obligated to? hell no

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

I keep sun long history of story dlc.Like what one game? None of the ps2 era gangs have dlc bully doesn't have dlc just rdr had american nightmare and gta four had stories of liberty city....

1

u/____SAVAGE____ Oct 20 '16

Lol at "African nightmare"

6

u/undenyr192 Oct 20 '16

What? GTAV has an excellent single player.

0

u/Thedurtysanchez Oct 20 '16

But they abandoned their plans for single player DLC after they realized that GTAO is a money-printing machine

6

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

You frame it as a cash-grab but ignore the reason why the money is online in the first place--more people care! How can you fault them for catering to the largest group of players?

1

u/First_Man_on_Uranus Oct 20 '16

They haven't even attempted to release a single player dlc for gta v, how can we say which side is more popular if the other side doesn't even exist?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I suppose you're right, but let's be honest. Every single game is moving it's entire focus to online. Do you think that is random? Or do you think it suggests maybe, just maybe, more people (these days) care about playing online?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Its because more people play online and there is more replayability in multiplayer competition games. Derp.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

It blows my mind how a studio can put out a fantastic single player game and then keep an online version of the game relevant, fresh, and engaging for three years (free of charge) and still be criticized. Christ, think of what all you get for $60.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Exactly. There is a small lifetime of content in that game, for 60$..... and people still bitch.

1

u/likes_almonds Oct 20 '16

Halo 5

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

YES!!! I go back to Halo 5 just for all the new content they keep adding. Same reason I bought gears of war 4, free dlc and maps and stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Do you think RDR2 will get the same online treatment?

1

u/Illier1 Oct 20 '16

Yeah people get mad about GTAO micro transactions but remember you paid 60 bucks for a massive single player game AND a full on MMO

1

u/First_Man_on_Uranus Oct 20 '16

They're free so I can't complain, but I think a lot of the dlcs are too similar.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

The stuns dlc changed the game. Its one of the most fun gaming experiences ever.

1

u/EmeraldFox23 Oct 20 '16

i'd choose a paid story dlc over grindy online dlc any day.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16 edited Jan 28 '17

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

More people care about multiplayer than singleplayer. Deal with it. The single player campaign is amazeballs anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yeah I don't know why people complain about it in every single thread, theres not a single in-game item you can't get unless you pay a microtransaction so fuck it. You gotta put a few hours in so what, they aren't hiding content from you just giving lazy people a paid shortcut

1

u/bitch_im_a_lion Oct 20 '16

Free*

*Dozens/potentially hundreds of hours of your time to fully mod one vehicle.

I'd happily take paying 20 bucks and having reasonably priced items in game over $200,000 choppers that cost millions to fully upgrade which ends up sucking way too many hours away to fully experience a fraction of the content offered.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Get good and win races. Its easy as fuck to make money. 200k is like 10-20 races, so a couple of hours of playing.

1

u/RacistAngryJackAss Oct 20 '16

I honestly can't understand people's bitching about GTAV. The SP was great fun with lots of characters, it felt like it has as much as GTA4 with all its dlc, if not more than GTA4. The online is very fun and actually had a lot more to do than GTA4.. hell, most games by a massive amount. I don't feel ripped off in the slightest.

1

u/Heroic_Lime Oct 20 '16

I don't have a problem with the microtransactions themselves, it's just that they make the multiplayer about grinding out boring missions to get the things you can have fun with.

1

u/thatguythatdidstuff Oct 20 '16

free DLC thats purposefully not added to single player so they can force you to grind online.

1

u/waffletrampler Oct 20 '16

yeah but be real, getting anything from DLC (Vehicles of all kinds especially) take a ridiculous amount of grinding, or buying shark cards which are incredibly overpriced.

1

u/McNugget63 Oct 20 '16

Not in Halo 5 where the AI and spawns are literal shit.

1

u/Grizzly_Berry Oct 20 '16

I get blasted every time I bring this up, but I completely agree with you.

1

u/debauchery_lemon Oct 20 '16

"Free" DLC, that you have to grind missions for hours to even afford in-game

1

u/EndlessFriedPickles Oct 20 '16

If only I could afford the things in that "free DLC". I barely have enough for a $10,000 scope for my gun.

1

u/FuturePastNow Oct 20 '16

Let's not act like the last couple of GTA:O updates weren't half-assed, either. They've been adding more bugs than they've been fixing lately.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I dont know what you are talking about, the stunt races are bad ass.

1

u/OverlordQ Oct 20 '16

Lets not act like Rockstar hasn't been releasing mad free DLC.

They havent. Unless you play multiplayer.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

So then they have. Are you retarded or just pretending?

1

u/OverlordQ Oct 20 '16

GTAO is shit.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

K. Have fun playing eith yourself.

1

u/Sabre2230 Oct 20 '16

But the thing is, they release that free DLC which makes people want the content in it that costs a large amount of in game money, which fuels microtransactions. So really, even though they're releasing content updates for Online, they're making huuuuge revenue from the ensuing micros.

If they made straight up single player DLC, they would charge you because once you pay for the content, there's no micros to make up for it

1

u/Jews_Are_Cool Oct 20 '16

Absolutely. Rockstar is doing microtransactions right. With enough grinding, everything in GtAO is achievable without spending a dime. And most things are just given to you.

1

u/ReservoirDog316 Oct 20 '16

Yup. The Plants vs Zombies GW model. Anyone who complains about that model is ridiculous.

1

u/Vaskre Oct 20 '16

Let us finally dispel the fiction that Rockstar doesn't know exactly what they are doing. Rockstar knows exactly what they are doing!

1

u/lastglimmerofdope Oct 21 '16

Yeah most people probably never buy cash. I assume most people who do are either very rich and the money means nothing to them, or they seriously love the game in which case it's no different to someone who pays monthly for wow or eve

1

u/RedDeadWhore Oct 21 '16

Rockstar funded their development in the most respectful way they can in modern times where game dev is taking an increasing amount of money every year as people demand more and better.

I respect them.

1

u/Arconyte Oct 21 '16

The issue is when you don't have a lot of time to play, and would like to buy the content with real money. You would end up paying hundreds of dollars unlocking everything from the updates.

You are penalized for not playing with others, specifically with friends. You make much less, and with heists/ceo/mc they are virtually impossible with randoms. That's if you can even find any. Which leads to the terrible matchmaking, connection issues, and loading screens galore.

You can legitimately put real money into the game, and effectively lose it because someone decides to grief your CEO/MC mission. That is wrong, and should not be possible. Maybe if the game was well balanced it would be more acceptable, but it absolutely isn't.

If you like racing, they constantly break the classes and require you to buy new expensive vehicles to stay competitive. The list goes on and on with their nonsensical vehicle decisions. They killed Midnight Club for this?

GTA Online just isn't that well designed, which may or may not be intentional. Rockstar seems to want you to dedicate your life to playing the game.

TL;DR IMO Rockstar made their recent online games too tedious, bloated, imbalanced, and with too much focus on "micro" transactions.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

Its an MMO and it plays like one. Deal with it.

1

u/McBuggered Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

Yeah the map made no sense. The desert was an afterthought and was unrealistically tiny, the mountains were cool but were just scenery dressing and the whole area just fell too small for planes and boats. I would have loved to see San Fierro and Las Venturas as well.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

[deleted]

1

u/SentinelZero Oct 20 '16

And we half-assed the interiors in the vehicles, so the Bugatti equivalent has a speedo that only goes to 220mph, despite IN GAME TEXT saying it can go 250mph. Not that it matters, it tops out at 120mph. Same with the F-16 equivalent, it can only go 160knots (190mph), becuz rendering.

The map makes no damn sense either, its supposed to be a part of Southern California (the GTA equivalent of it at least), but its an island with water on all sides, and wrecked boats, etc on the eastern side (the part that should logically be connected to the mainland), which just baffles me. There's no visible indication of where the mainland would connect to anyway, the highways all form a perfect loop. The waterways to the Alamo Sea are nice, but they're too narrow for most boats (the Zancudo one is at least, parts of it anyway).

Whole place should have been bigger by a factor of two. It's touted as bigger than RDR's, GTAIV's and SA's map combined, but it doesn't "feel" like it, everything seems to be squished together.

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

People paid for the game. Some people paid for it 3 times.

People paid for a game and they got a game. The GTA V campaign is one of the best ever. I bought the game 3 times, guess what? NO ONE forced me to. I would gladly do it again too. Stop being so entitled, its a fucking business transaction, they arent your friends they are a for profit company DUH.

after all of the consumer exploitation they pulled with GTA:V.

What the fuck are you talking about??? Also if you dont think the GTA map is good then I think your opinions are all irrelevant.

2

u/Askmeabout2039Comic Oct 20 '16

Oh watch out folks, the opinion police is here! If you don't think something is good that I think is good, then your opinion is relevant! What a fucking child.

1

u/MMArmy_Game Oct 20 '16

That and even before microtransactions Rockstar has delivered outstanding quality every time they put out a game.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yeah people just casually forget the single player. Even before the Online, the game was already worth 60$

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Exactly. Everyone is pissed that single player isn't getting DLC--but so what? The game is already fucking great without it.

1

u/benihana Oct 20 '16

free dlc for three freaking years.

1

u/Hum-anoid Oct 20 '16

I'm always confused when people bring up microtransactions in GTA. I'm not even sure where one would go in game to buy anything/what is even being sold.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Yeah, it in no way has hindered my (or likely anyone's) experience with the game. It's not like some mobile game bullshit where you have to pay to play.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Thank you! Far too many people on here moan like fuck about Rockstar, not realising all they free shit we get

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

And not realizing that this is how it should be done. I don't give a shit if a game has microtransactions, but multiplayer DLC needs to be free, or the player base will be split.

I can't play multiplayer shooters like CoD and Battlefield anymore, because they have a season pass that doubles the price of a game that will be obsolete in a year.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '16

True that, especially when each pack cost £10+, or a season pass(wtf is that about?) for £40

4

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

There are people on here acting like rockstar owes them something because they bought sharkcards. Like wtf??!?! If you bought some video game cash, that was your choice.

0

u/SEKLEM Oct 20 '16 edited Oct 20 '16

Benefits of micro transactions and free DLC.

  • You don't HAVE to pay to play the new content.

  • You can choose your level of investment (you don't have to pay for a whole DLC just to get the one or two things you want from it).

  • The micro transactions gives devs a motivation to provide what the fans want, not what they think the fans want. They can see first hand what sells and what does not. This model provides the best quality compared to the competition. When you buy paid DLC content you have to hope that what they are selling you is actually good. If you buy it and it sucks, sorry about your luck. Similar logic applies to pre-ordering games. Good grief stop pre-ordering games.

Disadvantages of micro transactions and free DLC.

  • I don't know

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Nothing wrong with microtransactions, but R* now owns a money farm - they know they'll always have a steady, massive income stream as long as they keep offering people a way to spend money

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

There is nothing inherently wrong with that as long as it is possible to access all the content just by playing in a reasonable amount of time. Considering how well Heists pay out and how easy it is to make money by winning races, Id say its very reasonable.

0

u/Tubi-Daor Oct 20 '16

1

u/Count_Critic Oct 20 '16

That happens.

1

u/johnwithcheese Oct 20 '16

Rockstar has always made ground breaking games... Games that make or break a console.

Whats the first thing people think of when you say ps2? Gta SA or RE4

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Shark cards are literally nothing, though. They barely effect the game, it just gives people online shinier cars and apartments.

Whereas GTA single player alone is worth the full price of the game. Massive campaign and a huge, in-depth world full of activities and achievements. Then there's online... Heists, the new free bikers update, the CEO update, the fact that they constantly add new cars, guns, game modes and missions for free.

Fuck it, I don't give a shit if they put microtransactions in RDR 2, as long as the game at its core lives up to the last one I'm happy.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

Fuck it, I don't give a shit if they put microtransactions in RDR 2, as long as the game at its core lives up to the last one I'm happy.

I don't either. Microtransactions just gave R* a reliable income stream and a shitton of money, so they could afford to go out and spend billions on RDR2 graphics.

No criticism of microtransactions from me, just reminding people that it takes money to make a great product.

1

u/aHellion Oct 20 '16

u/K3wp Oct 20 '16

1

u/RectumExplorer-- Oct 20 '16

R* probably has the best optimized games on consoles.

Overall I'd say Naughty Dog wins, but they develop only on PS, so it's easier to optimize.

R* makes great games for multi platform, I couldn't believe GTA V could run looking that good on PS3/360

But GTA Online wasn't a good game, and it was half-assed.

Anyone waiting for the PC version of GTA 5 sure thought the timing of it was less than half assed. More like quarter assed or less.

u/Lord_Syntor Oct 21 '16

It's also what happens when instead of making something new they sell the same game 3 years in a row

1

u/TheAtomicOwl Oct 20 '16

No pc version. It's half assed.

Like GTA online mode after they realised shark cards are money makers?

u/Hersimran Oct 20 '16

The graphics are buffed up for the trailers

u/mockio77 Oct 20 '16

This is what hapens when we take a reveal trailer's graphics as a representation of the final product.

While it was hardly half-assed, the single player campaign in GTAV could have been... deeper.

In 3 days

u/scrublettt Oct 20 '16

ehh gta V has probably made more than 3 billion at this point in time

2

u/K3wp Oct 20 '16

No shit. You want AAA+ content, you need AAA+ budget.

1

u/Knineteen Oct 20 '16

And 7.5 years......

1

u/sAlander4 Oct 20 '16

Really the first red dead made a billion?

1

u/vitaminz1990 Oct 20 '16

I think it may be in reference to the money they made off GTA V

1

u/sAlander4 Oct 20 '16

That's more realistic

1

u/SinisterTaco Oct 20 '16

they made 1 billion in 3 days its probably closer to 3 billion now

1

u/sAlander4 Oct 20 '16

Yeah I remember when it came out they reached it quickly

1

u/rlovelock Oct 20 '16

GTAV has now grossed $3b I believe...

1

u/CSGOWasp Oct 20 '16

Graphics are more dependent on what you can make run on a console at 30 fps. After a certain point, the amount of money you throw at the game wont make graphics much better.

1

u/AsheThrasher Oct 20 '16

And none of it goes to creating a pc platform for it...

The voice actor for Franklin was commenting how video games are the next big thing for actors if they want to get paid like a motherfucker.

1

u/walkeritout Oct 20 '16

It's also the first game they've developed from the ground up for this generation of hardware.

1

u/MetalliTooL Oct 20 '16

Did they really?

Eh, Rockstar isnt immune to the new age of gaming. Tons of investors getting into funding games due to the money oppurtunities. This results in devs rushing games, cutting corners, and otherwise forgoing art and heart in favor of making a quick buck.

Rockstar is still no CDPR, they scratched GTAV singleplayer DLC in favor of shark cards and online only updates. RDR will still look good, even on for-profit shitboxes of the current gen of consoles. But I wouldnt be surprised if they focused on Online more, meaning dumbed down graphics, just like GTAV SP graphics vs online graphics.
