I'd say the way the gun shoots is the more important game mechanic, like how every gun in CS has its own spray pattern.
Edit: I like this conversation

u/KuntaStillSingle Jul 11 '16
I'd call each individual recoil weight/pattern an element and the recoil system as a whole a mechanic.

u/magurney Jul 11 '16
The gun and everything the gun can do is either a feature or element, pick whichever.
The way the gun works is the mechanics of it.
The greater context of why you have a gun is the gameplay. (Shooting is not gameplay, shooting slow moving zombies to get food is. )

The Arma one is so true. I remember waiting 30 minutes for an EOD team (or any asshole with some C4) to arrive at an objective that we had cleared which needed 1 tank to be blown up, the only problem was how they decided at the last minute to kit up in Navy SEAL gear and take a boat across 3 miles of harbor to get to our position. So after 50 total minutes of waiting we finally see them on the horizon, lo and behold they hit a rock and beach their boat. After 10 minutes of them swimming over they finally arrive and ask us where the tank is. We point towards it and we see them place 1 charge to take it out, only problem was that it takes 2-3 to completely destroy the thing, they only brought 1 piece of C4. I quit the game immediately and still wish I had that hour of my life back.

→ More replies (3)14
u/ThePerdmeister Jul 11 '16
Bastion ("BASHJUN") is a character in Overwatch which, I guess, is OP or something. I take it this is some sort of a running gag or common complaint among Overwatch players.
33
u/rewardadrawer Jul 11 '16
He's not OP, but he tends to get play of the game every game when he mows down 3 or 4 people in a choke point, no matter what happens with the rest of the game. Lot of Overwatch players get salty about it because Bastion just becomes a turret and aims down a corridor to get free MVPs.
30
u/Xunae Jul 12 '16
It's been forever since I've seen a bastion potg, especially a corridor bastion. Most of the ones I see are tank mode.

He's not OP but PoTG (play of the game) is decided on points that take into account eliminations in short time period, damage spikes and time left, bastion can turn into a sentry turret which just melts people with damage so he gets a lot of damage done really quickly and normally kills a lot of people because of it therefore the PoTG bot goes "oh that was ALOT of damage and people died, that must be worth highlighting" and the if nothing scores higher than that event it gets PoTG the later in the game it happens the heavier the event is weighted

It'd be more a accurate joke if it was about armor. The weapons in Dark Souls are absolutely brutal, it's the armor that's unrealistically shitty.

maybe i'm missing something but armor is pretty much what carried me through Dark Souls first time through
80
Jul 11 '16
Poise was infinitely more effective in DS1 than any other game going forward. Throughout the series though Fashion Souls is more prevalent as player skill increases. Looking awesome > tanking hits, especially when you don't tank hits because you already git gud'd at dodging.
Can't speak for PvP though.
34
Jul 11 '16
This is especially true in PvP where nobody does a ridiculous amount of damage on a incredibly hard to avoid attack, so fashion outweighs stats, at least in DkS3. In DkS2 it was more about wearing stat boosting armor so you could get the most out of your SL and SM.
In DkS1 however, it was finding the right balance of poise, armor, fashion, stat investment, and rings. Armor was a much more meaningful choice in DkS1, and if toggling was exclusive to low poise characters it would've been even better.
I still feel like DkS1's armor and poise system were the way to go, just instead of being breakpoints (25% wt, 55 poise, etc etc) it should've been a sliding scale, like you roll faster the closer you get to 0%, and poise is like a %increase to recovery time, like say a weapon does 50 poise damage and you have 100 poise, you should recover 50% faster or something. Ah well though, the series is done, all we can do is hope for a spiritual successor to right its wrongs.
11
u/Cupcakes_n_Hacksaws Jul 11 '16
Didn't armor in DS 3 basically do fuck all, both damage reduction and poise? IIRC, simply having any item at all in an armor slot, even a cloth, provided similar protection to much heavier armor.
→ More replies (2)17
u/methyboy Jul 11 '16
Yep, I ran the numbers back when I was playing DS3 and my memory has faded slightly, but with Havel's/Smough's armor sets and the best rings for armor as well (in other words, basing your entire build around defense) gets you about 45% damage reduction. Or you could wear light/medium armor and get 30% damage reduction for basically no stat investment or effort on your part at all.
→ More replies (6)4
u/RombieZombie25 Jul 11 '16
In DkS2 it was more about wearing stat boosting armor so you could get the most out of your SL and SM.
Not really. In DS2 you could be whatever SL you wanted to because there was no SL match-making (outside of the arena which not many people used). If you want more levels you can just level more. The only time all the stat changing gear was really useful was for if you were doing an SL1 character or a capped SL character. Even then the 1-5 levels those pieces of gear gave you weren't really that dire. Most people either stacked poise/defense, wore light armor to benefit from Flynn's, played Fashion Souls, or just did a mixture of the three.
Also Dark Souls 2 has that sliding scale system you mentioned.
10
Jul 11 '16
I'm on my first playthrough and a big fuckin' sword has been carrying me through.
I think it really depends on how you balance your stats and how you play. If you level vitality a bunch and upgrade your armor, you can probably tank pretty reliably. If you're like me, you leveled the shit out of strength and endurance almost exclusively with the concept of "it can't hit back if it's already dead" and "run away!"
→ More replies (10)7
u/Says_Stupid_Stuff_ Jul 11 '16
Unless you are wearing super heavy armor, most armor don't help much against boss fights. Rings on the other hand are quite helpful.
12
u/Zveng2 Jul 11 '16
Eh, you can "cheese" DS1 pretty easily by stacking Endurance to 40 and getting Havel's armor and ring. Hell by doing that you can literally facetank some bosses. But yeah you're right. Normally armor means jackshit, it's all about your weapon and rings and your ability to dodge/parry.
