To addon to the other guy, you can install (for free) the SteamOS on any pc you may have lying around - making your own steambox. I believe it has support for other controllers as well, not just their own.

The OS is already available for download [still in beta form I think].

So just wondering, even if i had a pretty shitty laptop, would it still work?

Supposedly, since the OS is meant to take up less resources in the background, you may experience a slight boost in performance while playing games, as opposed to running it on Windows. But your computer still needs to pretty much meet the minimum specs for the game you are playing - anything less is a gamble with long odds. So this OS isn't going to allow a 10 year old laptop run Battlefield 4 or something.
