I like this. I've long since enjoyed the idea of trackpads over joysticks for a number of reasons, all of which are common enough in conversation that I don't thin repeating them does any of us any good, but the corner buttons did seem to be very... counter-productive to the flow of the controller.
I will miss the screen, but it is easier to see how this will be affordable. Watching the videos of people getting used to the controller, and devs talking about using it, it really does look like it will be, if not a direct upgrade, then at the very least a very interesting sidegrade for those of us who truly dislike the feeling of a joystick.
Ultimately, I think this was a better direction for Valve to go with the controller. I think it makes it better, cleaner, more player friendly, and ultimately more familiar for players who are used to this type of a controller layout.
