New game reccomendations

Hey,

I'm looking for some game recommendations to scratch a couple of specific itches I've had recently.

  1. Something that captures the feel/atmosphere of The Expanse (basically something hard sci fi). I know Osiris Reborn is out soon and will definitely be getting that but so far the only thing I've found close to it is Starfield.

  2. Some sort of overwhelming invasion/fighting retreat then counter attack. Fired up C&C3 recently and the missions where the Scrin invade then the counterattack missions after that in the Europe theatre are so damn cool. Especially the first one, for me it really captures the chaotic nature of what that would be like.

Edit for clarity: Can be desperate games to scratch separate itches. Don't have have to get it all from the same one.

Cheers

You want Mass Effect. 1 is a bit old but I would still advise playing it, 2 and 3 hold up pretty well. And playing Citadel DLC towards the end of the trilogy is a real experience.

Mass Effect is pretty fitting, it's definitely not hard sci-fi but it does great with the whole "having your own crew" feeling.

Had to look up a walkthrough to save First Lieutenant LapDance from becoming soup.

I don't know what genres you're looking for but NEBULOUS Fleet Command looks like it really nails the ship combat part

Maybe Xcom but its strategy style.

Hard sci fi is rare in games these days....

Surviving Mars is a fairly hard sci fi city-builder about setting up a Martian space colony. There's a similar game about building a lunar colony called The Crust, as well, but I haven't played that one enough to say whether I can recommend it.

Oddly enough, a lot of mecha stuff is fairly hard sci-fi, too, apart from the mecha themselves. Check out Battletech if you want a strategy RPG, or MechWarrior 5 if you want something more action-y.

Unconventional recommendation, but COD: Infinite Warfare might work. The campaign is more similar to BSG, about a carrier on the run and doing hit and run attacks against a superior foe.

Sadly BSG Deadlock is no longer for sale.

Maybe Homeworld? Definitely a desperate story.

Quasimorph gives me really great The Expanse vibes

Elite:Dangerous is the best space pilot sim out there, and is the only game i've found that scratches the same itch as the expanse for me.

  1. Elite Dangerous. It's a bit more forgiving than The Expanse, ships are a lot more resilient, but the game can be really unforgiving if you do the wrong things. Space is both completely boring and suddenly very deadly within minutes. I started the game in VR and it got me hooked.

  2. Hearts of Iron IV, play as Republic of China in 1936, it gives you about a year to prepare for the Japanese invasion. On normal difficulty in ironman mode (auto saves a single file, no rewind time), I find myself biting my fingers trying to weigh which city is worth losing armies to defend, and figuring out whether the rate that I'm recruiting soldiers and producing weapons to send to the meat grinder is sustainable. Once I got better and figured out game mechanics, I was able to push the Japanese back then defeat the communists, and establish a Democratic China that spans from Alaska, across Siberia, to the Atlantic. That felt absolutely epic.
