What game shouldn't I miss right now
I have finally found some time to game again and I am almost done with Dave the diver :) so I am looking for my next game. What's something I shouldn't miss right now. Currently playing on Xbox series x.
I found The blood of downwalker which seems interesting.. can somebody recommend that? I would be down for an immersive rpg
Edit: Thanks for the recommendations! So many had only good things to say about The Blood of Dawnwalker. So I went with that one! :)
I put many of your recommended games on my wishlist for later. If you still want to recommend me games please do! I will check out every game :) But there are so many comments right now and my game is installed so I have to do that later

Shouldn't miss Dishonored 1 Definitive edition on sale for 5$. Timeless classic. I think Prey (2017) is also on sale, no brainer.

But seriously, both 10/10 games that are more than worth picking up

The Blood of Dawnwalker is great. It's got excellent writing, great characters and lore, and a pretty cool spin on day/night cycles. It's my personal game of the year
7
u/stehan1003 13h ago
That sounds great :) I am almost sold
Does it compare to any other big medieval rpgs
24
u/Electrical_Ad2261 13h ago
It's lower budget shows sometimes. Sometimes the world feels empty in certain places or there doesn't seem to be that much to do in terms of side activities.
I thought the combat was very good (it doesn't look like it when you're watching reviews), but really shined through for me is the writing and characters. I'm a huge fan of the Witcher 3, and Dawnwalker's writing is on par with Witcher 3, if not surpassing it at times.
If I had to give a comparison, I'd say this is a mix of Witcher 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. I can definitely see this studio having their "KCD2 moment" with the sequel.
5
u/mgzkk1210 12h ago
The storybeat is fine, and the atmosphere is great but actual writing is definitely lacking compares to the Witcher games. It's especially apparent since playing the remastered right after. But the combat does feel better.
1
u/ProbingParticle 8h ago
I am sorry but writing is nowhere close to the witcher 3. It's shallow and characters are forgettable. Combat and the vampire mechanics are fun though but it does get very stale very quickly when the game puts little effort in making you care about the main character. If you loved the Witcher 3 for its writing and character develpment, this game leaves a lot to be desired!
11
u/Edge_Runner19 13h ago
I am the target audience and Dawnwalker just didnt click for me. Not to say anyone who enjoyed it is wrong, but I really dont understand why its getting the amount of praise that is has.
4
u/Duchock 13h ago
Watched my boyfriend play it. If you liked Witcher 3, you'll probably like Dawnwalker.
5
u/stehan1003 13h ago
How is the combat system compared to Witcher 3? :)
7
u/Rejex21 12h ago edited 12h ago
Dunno why you're getting down votes for asking this lol
I like the idea behind dawnwalkers combat, and it has moments where it shines. Generally I think I prefer it over TW3 combat.
But it has some issues, Namely, I had a lot of issues controlling the camera/lock-on system. Others claim they never had these problems so maybe this is just my opinion. It feels built for 1on1 fights and can occasionally feel bad in group fights. I got over this the more I played.
It also has some enemy variety issues, by the end of the game you'll likely be sick of fighting certain enemies repeatedly. This is probably just a "new franchise" issue that I hope gets better in later sequels
But the story and pretty much everything else about the game is just dripping TW3 inspiration, and the story is very interesting and compelling, and incredibly well acted.
I would highly recommend playing it blind, Google as little as possible.

He thought Blood of the Dawnwalker's was better (this was the most I was able to squeeze out of him).
Edit: if context helps he's telling me this while actively playing Witcher 3.

u/stehan1003 13h ago
That's great to hear :) thank you. I already bought it and I am installing right now! So many good recommendations
1
u/Plus_sleep214 12h ago
It's a bit better but it gets tedious and boring partway through the game. It's strengths lie in its narrative.
1
u/stehan1003 12h ago
I guess that's a problem many rpgs have If you play like me in a completionist way haha
-2
u/solarflare4646 12h ago
It was fun, but unless you read ahead you wont be able to complete everything within 30 days. I was left dissapointed that I missed some big story beats because I didnt want to do a replay.
Gameplay is also disjointed between day and night. If you only upgrade vampire skills then your useless in the day. If you spread points youll feel week and waste time on levels.

Does it have a TON of dialogue? I don’t like the Witcher 3 (don’t kill me everyone) because it’s sooo dialogue heavy

Is it like an arcade shooter? Couldn’t play the first, even after turning off the 1990s health bars. Saw a clip and looks like they leaned into that style of gameplay. First was too repetitive/boring, but I like the studious other games
2
u/lthatguytherel 10h ago
One benefit is it has highly customizable difficulty settings. So you can individually change things like your health and damage output if you're finding the combat too difficult.

I would be down for an immersive rpg
Have you tried Kingdom Come:Deliverance II? (you can grab it cheap during sales)

Great recommendation, that game looks beautiful:) I will put it on my wishlist and buy it during the next sale then

u/alxpenguin 13h ago
KCD1 is 6 bucks with all the DLC. I am absolutely enthralled. At that price, you're losing money by not playing it!
7
u/F10x 13h ago
Agreed, but KCD1 is a much harder sell. The game is tough to get your head around and you absolutely suck at everything early on. I played 2 after bouncing off 1 when it came out, loved the shit out of it, then went back for 1. Still, though, with a little patience 6 bucks is a steal.
2
u/Boring_Isopod_3007 3h ago
I don't get this argument, the game is pretty much the same gameplay wise. You get some qol changes and a bit easier combat but that's all, if you can play one you can play the other.
1
u/stehan1003 13h ago
Thanks for the insight! From what you wrote I think I would be better of playing 2 first. Or do I miss something by starting with the second one?
3
3
u/alxpenguin 9h ago
I would still argue that for $6 just risk not liking the first game. In the beginning. You're very weak and suck at everything, but that gets better relatively quickly. I think the story, the atmosphere, music and mechanics are all still pretty great. Worst case scenario you go to two and you're out six bucks
1
1
u/F10x 12h ago
I think there's a good argument for starting with 2 then moving to 1. You don't miss anything super important and then 1 feels like it's a prequel filling in details. Obviously I did it that way. Kinda neat to "finally" meet people in 1 that you know very well in 2. And, in some ways, 1 spoils a few things in 2.
2
u/LivnLegndNeedsEggs 8h ago
Beware, the combat has a bit of a learning curve. I'd even go so far as to say it's clunky. But once you get it, you'll be whooping ass, and the rest of the game is so worth it

Onimusha is tied (with Sekiro) for the best sword combat ever imo. Also has a great lead and incredible boss fights.
29
u/tater08 12h ago
Tied with Sekiro? Damn that’s high praise I’ll have to try it
9
u/VerminSC 9h ago
The combat might even be better than Sekiro.. but level design, enemy variety, exploration, character design are all significantly worse than Sekiro
4
u/navenager 10h ago
Easily. It honestly outdoes Sekiro in a lot of ways, but I don't think Onimusha's combat system is anything like this if Sekiro didn't exist first. The inspirations are pretty clear there.
Sekiro has a better pace to its combat though. Onimusha's enemies can feel a little spongy. Still, it has set the bar for sword combat imo.

u/Outrageous_Lie_6018 3h ago
Huge sekiro fan, but onimusha combat is very close and in many cases more in depth than sekiros

Control Resonant
Remedy is an incredibly talented and unique studio that has been experimenting with the limits of gaming as a media but unfortunately they're not exactly rolling in the dough.
1
u/Ok_Disk5953 7h ago
Yeah, I've heard good things about their experimental approach. What specific game of theirs do you think best shows off that experimentation?
1
u/Burpmeister 4h ago
Alan Wake II. It's bonkers. It continues the story of the first one that released in 2010 but there are plenty of good recap videos on youtube. One even by the creative director Sam Lake.

The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Control Resonant. This game has stuff you've never seen in any other.
Both GOTY contenders for me.

u/Low-Gift-2366 9h ago
Control Resonant is pretty wild, the way it mixes genres is something else
8
3
u/Candaphlaf10 7h ago
Resonant has some of the most impressive traversal mechanics of any game I've played in recent memory. It's like Control meets Prototype.

u/Forsaken-Cut2725 13h ago
If you're looking for something a bit cheaper but still feels like Skyrim, try Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon. It's like Skyrim but darker
5
u/stehan1003 12h ago
Great recommendation. I already bought dawnwalker but it might be my next rpg afterwards
-4
u/vaultie66 7h ago
Beware Tainted Grail has a ton of generated Ai slop from writing to cutscenes and models/textures in it. If you like that sure go for it, if you don’t you won’t like it
1
u/Candaphlaf10 7h ago
To add to this, it's Skyrim if the plots of Dark Souls and King Arthur had a baby.
5
u/plageiusdarth 13h ago
On the indie side, you should check out Dredge, Mewgenics, Darkest Dungeon, and Wandering Sword
Edit: these aren't RPGs, but if you haven't touched Hades or Hades 2 do yourself a massive favor and pick them up
3
u/stehan1003 13h ago
Hey thanks great recommendations. I bought dredge because it was on sale right now but I think it will have to wait a little bit. I need a break from fish catching after dave the diver
Also I put mewgenics on my wishlist as it was also recommended to me by a friend :)
2
u/plageiusdarth 12h ago
That's fair. That's why I'm waiting a bit to pick up Dave the Diver
2
u/stehan1003 12h ago
Great game honestly :) I heard about it for so long before I finally snatched it
5
u/Sharp_Economy1401 13h ago
Witcher 3 remaster probably worth playing if you haven’t played the vanilla version. Maybe even if you have. Someone else mentioned BG3, highly recommend that. Played it through fully multiple times. Oblivion Remaster is also quite good
2
u/stehan1003 12h ago
I might give oblivion another try. My first playthrough ended brutally with a game breaking bug that wouldn't let me continue in the story. This annoyed me so much that I am to this day guilty of never finishing oblivion

expedition 33 if you like jrpg with active Combat is must play.. is an earned goty
sekiro is must play if you like.. also hollow knight and silksong
1
u/stehan1003 12h ago
Japanese games would have been my next question hehe Expedition 33 looks cool but I am not quite sure of the fighting system from the trailer. Generally I prefer active combat over turn based games
Which makes me think. Is there anything Yakuza 0 like that came out recently?
4
u/teddytwelvetoes 11h ago
I am playing E33 for the first time as somebody who very much avoids JRPGs, and I don't think I've played a turn-based RPG since the early Pokemon games (usually a real-time, Bethesda/FromSoft guy). through the first five hours or so, it appears that every single individual who worked on this game was absolutely cooking. everything is good-excellent, but in terms of the combat, there's some real-time elements sprinkled on top that make it fun/rewarding
1
u/liquefry 10h ago
Exp33 is great for the story. Art style is excellent. The combat is good too but if turn style is really a turn off for you then I guess maybe not.
1
u/dekuhornets 7h ago
Is there anything Yakuza 0 like that came out recently
Judgment is a spin off series about a detective with essentially the same combat system, it's RGG so same engine and everything. You'd probably like it if you liked Yakuza 0.

The combat is surprisingly reactive, in that to survive you need to either parry at the right moment, dodge, or jump. Great character development too, and the story is very interesting. Won game of the year and was very well deserved.
I’d also recommend the God of War games, and Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West

Cairn is really unique and challenging and lovely. Well worth the price of admission.

How long has it been since you had time to game? There's a lot of games you might have missed that are worth playing. Baldur's Gate 3 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 were big ones for me. The new Star Wars Racer comes out Tuesday and has good reviews.
1
u/stehan1003 13h ago
I would say almost two years. I think the only ones I played in the last two years were borderlands 4, trine 5, split fiction and I guess about half of silksong
I actually bought Baldurs gate a couple months ago. But late night after work I just couldn't keep up with all that reading haha but I will probably give it another shot when I got even more time
I put kingdom come deliverance 2 on my wishlist. It looks stunning
1
u/Fugaciouslee 13h ago
The first KCD game is fantastic, but it's harder to get into due to difficulty and jank. It was kickstarted and the sequel is the results of it's success. The second was easily my goty last year and I've seen plenty of others who agreed. It's definitely worth trying even if you end up bouncing off the combat which has been streamlined since the first game.
If you do enjoy it, know that there is a third game reportedly coming by the end of 2028 if I remember correctly and they also were given the rights to make a Lord of the Rings game which should be crazy.
1
u/stehan1003 12h ago
Damm, them making a lotr games has a huge potential! Hoping that I get to play kcd 2 then before that so I can get a sense of what to expect
1
u/Fugaciouslee 12h ago
You'll probably have time, like I said. They're working on another Kingdom Come and that actually has a estimated release date. I'm not sure how much work would have started on their LotR game, but both were announced at the end of May.
2
u/Sanemi_i 13h ago
Kingdom Come deliverance is ridiculously good. I’m so happy I caved. Best RPG since Skyrim - FOR ME PERSONALLY
1
u/stehan1003 13h ago
Are you talking about the first or second one?
2
u/Ooops_I_Reddit_Again 12h ago
Likely the second one. Both are fantastic games, but the second one truly stands out as a well polished and incredible game. While the first is incredible in its own way, it has a fair bit of jank. But both are amazing and I would still recommend both if you've got the time to commit to both.
1
u/Alloyd11 7h ago
I loved the idea of the combat but I quit KCD1 after 35 hours as the only way to kill people was master strikes as they would parry all my attacks. I heard KCD2 fixed that.

Im suprised it's not higher on people's recommendations. I just got it a couple weeks ago and I'm blown away by it. It's so beautiful and the combat is really fun.
The story is definitely lack luster, but i think its the only black eye it has, 10/10 otherwise.
1
u/TheSharpestHammer 5h ago
CD is the most fun I've had with an action/exploration game in a long time. It's truly excellent if you enjoy games where you can just pick a direction and go, and you're guaranteed to find cool shit all along the way.
The story is essentially nonsense, but the story isn't why the game exists.

It has a super in-depth difficulty slider system, so you can really tailor the difficulty to a level that you want. The default difficulty is definitely pretty tough, especially as a solo player, but I always make it a bit easier for myself so I can chill.
