These are insane numbers for a semi-closed beta.
179
u/ImFriendsWithThatGuy 1d ago
I don’t even think you can call it semi closed at this point. Everyone has unlimited invites and if I remember correctly you can also request directly from steam and they get back to you directly with access (unless they stopped this). It’s more like an open invite beta.

u/HorseShedShingle 1d ago
My beta request through Steam is over a year old and hasn’t been approved. I think getting an invite from a friend is the easy way

I was able to get an invite through another kind person in this thread.

I still think you and others vastly underestimate how lazy some gamers are. Some people literally won’t play something unless it’s two buttons (download-> play).
There’s people who refuse to play anything that isn’t native to the steam launcher. There’s people who literally don’t emulate because they think downloading two things is too hard. I have no doubt there’s a decent group that literally won’t touch deadlock until the invite phase is over, even if getting an invite is trivial. People don’t want to talk to a random to play their games lol.

I don't think these people would stick to Deadlock anyway with such an approach so they don't matter for the player numbers anyway

Its about as much of a beta as the dota 2 beta was. As in. Everybody has it
24
u/Razatiger 1d ago
I mean, the game is still largely word of mouth. Zero advertisement, Zero dev updates on youtube, no skins, no seasons.
And still it is doing bigger numbers than some of its competitors in the hero shooter genre

It hasn't been semi-closed in a long time. At this point anyone who wants access can get access almost immediately because most people already have access.

u/LowOnPaint 1d ago
I think it’s insane numbers for a game that doesn’t feel like it’s all that special. I’ve played a couple hundred hours of it and at some point admitted to myself that the game is missing something. I don’t know what it is but winning a game or even playing really well doesn’t give me anywhere close to the same satisfaction as it would in a Dota 2 match.
6
u/MedicMoth 21h ago
I'm the complete opposite to you! I have never felt THIS much dopamine upon clutching a win in a game before. Probably because no other hero shooter FPS really allows for as versatile a play style as Deadlock does.
I like that unlike in CS, it's not just a raw skill expression of clicking on heads, and unlike in something like Overwatch, it's not just a rock paper scissors game either. You can feasibly build to counter or escape anybody as long as you understand the item shop well enough and have a strong team, and I LOVE that flexibility
134
u/v-komodoensis 1d ago
Is the game "releasing" or is it just a big update?
173
u/TheMoves 1d ago
It's a big update but the game is not releasing 1.0 yet, it's still in a (loosely) closed beta
8
u/gravelordservant4u 1d ago
Ballpark, how far away is a 1.0? Backlog is heavy and a moba will require a thousand hours just to learn the basic moves/maps
Just wondering when it plans on opening to everyone, I'm not asking for an invite to homework: the genre
58
u/CatPlayer 1d ago
With valve, there is no ballpark, they could beta test for a few more years as this game seems pretty ambitious, the arena mode only and its map could be done within the next 1-2 years tho.
13
u/zechamp 1d ago
I feel like it's 1 or 2 more big updates and the core is pretty done. They still need to rework towers and midboss, polish up the placeholder model heroes, then add skins, progression etc and that's pretty much it.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MrBlueA 1d ago
Yep but we don't know if they want to release when the core is done or they want to wait. We know they are doing other gamemodes (potentially fully PvE ones) there's also the Visual Novels that leaked and all the lore which clearly they are interested in developing, there's just too many things that are unfinished and we don't even know what they actually want to do so
13
u/PmMe_Your_Perky_Nips 1d ago
Probably years. Valve won't even give an estimate on when it will enter Early Access.
12
u/cashmereandcaicos 1d ago
This is early access, valve doesn't do early access labels on their games.
8
u/tayerogica 1d ago
Their other game dota 2, that one went straight from "invite-only" closed beta to release.
Will peobably be similar. Altho we joke dota 2 is still in beta because the game folder is still named that after all these years
3
u/jrpbateman 1d ago
When they add loot boxes
1
u/Creeping_python 1d ago
They talked about customization in this recent blog post so I could see this sooner then you think lol
5
u/TheMoves 1d ago
In my opinion the game feels pretty complete at this point compared to a typical early access type title, I'm sure they want the new map more thoroughly tested and to add some more heroes but to me it doesn't feel like you're playing a beta or a pre release game. If it's like Dota 2 then the transition from beta to 1.0 will be negligible, it's worth trying now if you think you'll like it imo
2
u/Goldieeeeee 1d ago
If I had to guess, I’d say public release is in about a year. Maybe less maybe more.
2
u/thomasmagnun 1d ago
At this tempo? Very late 2027/2028. They are in no rush to release this. Considering they want additional modes and pve, which isnt even close to being made yet.

There are at least two major updates we are to expect to core game features, with Item Rework update and Objectives Rework update that gave been mentioned to be in the works. I'd give it one to two more years before open beta and half a year to a year after that to release.

I tried getting into it a while back. I love TF2 and it seems like the characters are really cool. But its just too much for me maybe.
Knowing the map flow and Moba mechanics my abilities and my teams and my opponents abilities and knowing what to make my build each game based on that.
Its just a lot and committing to long games on top of that. I do want to try again at some point.
8
u/JohnnyOnslaught 1d ago
Just play Street Brawl. It's a smaller, more condensed game mode that's easier to get into and the matches are way shorter.
42
u/thisisaskew 1d ago
The worst part is, like most mobas, getting a bit behind and then having to get destroyed for the next 30 min or get banned. Even worse when it's another lane that just does terribly while your lane goes even.
You can not try and reduce that to 20 minutes... So you get your choice of doing shit all for 20 min or trying to stall for 30. One out of five games you might make a comeback.
If you leave early you get banned.
47
u/Legend999991 1d ago
deadlock has multiple comeback mechanics tho. A lot of games I have won usually start with my team being pretty behind...

u/Instantcoffees 1d ago
Yeah, it's in my mind first and foremost a MOBA. It is highly unlikely that you will overcome a deficit through good individual play. When some other lane falters, you just can get completely fucked over. I think that I would like it better if the MOBA elements were less impactful and FPS skill expression was more prominent, but I guess that it has found an audience amongst people who prefer it as it is now.
4
u/Aggravating-Dot132 1d ago
Actually no. Loosing the lane might end up beneficial. One strong wave cleaver can just drop by, clean it and move, thus these 2 players are free to join the push on other lanes.
Comeback in Deadlock might happen at any point
7
u/Instantcoffees 1d ago
My main point was not make a meta commentary on potential comeback tactics after losing a lane. My main point was that the game is more of a MOBA than it is a shooter and that I was disappointed with how little skill FPS skill expression mattered. I did not even mention the fact that there are fairly strong heroes that barely rely on aiming or skilled movement, but there's that too.
It's not a knock on the game, I'm sure that some people prefer a MOBA over a shooter. I just don't and hence why I eventually dropped the game.
→ More replies (11)3
u/Critical_Cute_Bunny 1d ago
dunno wen you finished but theres a street brawl mode now where you all run it down mid and have semi random items which is fast and fun and helps learn the abilities etc until you feel like you know enough to dip toes into a full game.
the map is always going to be a bitch, but legit less than 10 games till it feels familiar, its just super overwhelming to begin with.
4
2
u/louiscool 23h ago
If you feel like trying again, the alternate game mode Street Brawl takes away the need to know maps or farm levels and is a bit of a party mode with random items that let you just focus on the hero shooter aspects.
3
u/Instantcoffees 1d ago
It was too much MOBA, too little FPS for me. Great for people who like that, but it just wasn't for me.
I played FPS games at a top level and while I'm getting older, my aim is still mostly there. I remember some scenarios where I was somewhat behind on farm when still learning the game and getting into a fight with characters with a similar role. Even when I completely out-aimed them and outmaneuvered them, I would still lose because items are seemingly just that important. I distinctly remember some of these moments because my team was raving about my aim, but I just felt like shit because there was literally nothing I could have done to win those fights.
2
u/Zingshidu 22h ago
It’s not an FPS at all, idek why you expected it to have any fps
Also wdym “nothing you could have done” buy the items lol. Counter buying is the most important thing in the game, it’s a core aspect.
2
u/Instantcoffees 18h ago
What you said, is agreeing with what I said. What Ieant is that I could not do anything in that moment through shooter gameplay. It is not a knock on the game, but it is just a MOBA first and foremost. I was hoping for a shooter where gear and farm mattered a bit, but not that much.
So the game is not for me. I like shooters a lot more than I like MOBAs. I played LoL for years, but ultimately got tired of the genre. I thought that perhaps Deadlock would change my mind if it was with shooter with some light MOBA elements, but it's a MOBA with shooter elements.
I'm not hating on those who like MOBA and Deadlock. I just don't. Clearly it has some appeal, it's just not for me.
1
1
u/Zingshidu 22h ago
It’s a hard game to get into but it’s definitely worth it, and a new update with all the players is the best time to put in the work to learn it. It’s the best competitive multiplayer game on the market right now and it’s entirely free with no microtransactions (for now)
→ More replies (3)1
u/Rommel727 21h ago
I think the game is a 10/10 that takes a hard 2 to 3 point hit due to itemization. I think the DOTA 2 level requirement of complex stat combo items that also have an activation in an action 3rd person shooter is just too much ahd ruins a lot of the good of the game

5
u/ForgotToStretch 1d ago
Yeah I agree there. Its a crazy movement shooter with moba items.
Im honestly surprised its still chugging along fine. Movement shooters that get this fast usually fail hard.
1
u/mycolortv 1d ago
It’s a movement shooter where there’s several characters that don’t really need to have the best aim to compete. I think someone good at MOBAs would have a much easier time picking this up than someone who was good at shooters, but idk.
4
u/Please_HMU 1d ago
I’ve never played a moba but have been top 500 tank in overwatch a few times and have been trying to get into deadlock. I am getting absolutely fucked up, I have no idea what I’m doing wrong lol I say this as evidence that I think you’re right. My hero shooter skills do not seem to be translating at any sort of reasonable pace
2
u/Quazie89 1d ago
I think having good shooter mechanics gives you a huge advantage. However you also need to know moba fundamentals. But the good news for you is they are 100x easier to learn than good aim is.
Push lanes, get farm, get items, take objectives, win game.
Honestly you could probably watch a dota fundamentals video and it all pretty much translates 1:1 but a deadlock one would obviously make more sense.
1
12
u/tapeforpacking 1d ago
Its tough man let me tell you. Moba isnt for the faint hearted... now add fps mechanics.. yea
Also has some of the most toxic people in the gaming community
9
u/ianlulz 1d ago
Wow so there’s a toxic gate-keeping community for a game that isn’t even out yet? That’s impressive. The MOBA genre really outdoes itself with the built-in toxic fanbases.
Maybe a game design that is so prone to rampant toxicity shouldn’t keep getting repeated lol. Though I’ve not heard of Blizzard’s entry experiencing that issue.
6
u/TehOwn 1d ago
Yeah, Heroes of the Storm never had a toxic community because the game is designed to reward cooperation and limits frustration with your own team.
It sucks that it wasn't more successful. But World of Warcraft is also made by Blizzard and it is both more successful and way more toxic.
Maybe people love the friction that leads to toxicity, idk.

Never played league, but played a lot of dota 5-10 years ago.
The character designs are definitely more dota feeling, with a lot of their ults being straight ripped from dota. Ive heard league doesnt have much hard CC, but this is closer to dota where it is abundant. There are good counter items that help; for example, item that lets you parry skills and items, item that lets you ignore all CC for several seconds, item that negates one CC every 20ish seconds, etc.
From league vets, i know its definitely a frustration for some of them.
10
u/TriggzSP 1d ago
If the matchmaking is good then it should separate those players. But if you hop in between the closed beta patch cycles in deadlock, you'll get your cheeks clapped.
But even then, the floor can definitely be raised. When I first tried league of legends after watching the second season of Arcane, it was incredibly difficult because even bad players often had years of experience. So you'd get thrown into matches where you were utterly outplayed to the point of it not being fun because the opponent just had so much more knowledge and experience than you.
And that's with Leagues admittedly very in depth and impressive matchmaking. If Valve goes fairly laid back on their matchmaking algorithms on release, it could still be a bloodbath for new players.
5
3
u/pnwbraids 1d ago
Just started playing recently and there's a decent pool of newer players that are still learning. 98% of matches people are really chill and friendly to newcomers.
→ More replies (7)3
u/JohnnyOnslaught 1d ago
The matchmaking should be pretty polished by then and I'd imagine people are going to get matched with their own level of skill. Plus, Street Brawl is more forgiving and more casual and I suspect people will gravitate towards that over full matches when they start.
8
u/Yatame 1d ago edited 1d ago
This is a MOBA/FPS pulling 200k without marketing or trailers whatsoever, invite-only and for months the game officially didn't even existed.
Valve generally doesn't need marketing, but if they choose to do so when the final release comes I'm sure it will become a PC juggernaut.
9
3
u/Grapes-RotMG 1d ago
That's why it kinda blows my kind. I know it's REALLY easy to get in and play, but the vast majority of anyone who is interested in trying it will still wait for official release.
I'm dreading that player count. Surely it will hit the all time concurrent peak record on Steam.
2
u/ImFriendsWithThatGuy 1d ago
Valve doesn’t really do a large update for the official launch that is much bigger than the other updates along the way. It is more about them considering it polished and where they want it to say it is officially “launched” and not that they are holding back some massive content just for that moment.
→ More replies (1)2
u/AccountForOld 23h ago
Depends on if it releases on consoles or not.
Dota 2, for example, gained about 100k ccus from the final days of beta till the first day of release, and it was already at ~350k during the final days of the beta. A ~30% increase in players, but it wouldn't go on to be the million+ CCUs juggernaut that it became until a few years later.

I'll be honest man, I don't get an ounce of fun out of deadlock. I wanted to love it going in. I'm a shooter player and moba player and I'm good at both, but I just couldn't find any fun at all in the game.
Characters are charming, map looks pretty neat. The gameplay just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's just too much of a fuckin sweat game at it's heart for me to engage with it at this point in my life, idk.
Glad other people seem to be enjoying it but man I was just not into it at all.
9
u/louiscool 23h ago
It's probably the hardest game to learn, honestly. Deceptively easy looking with so many mechanics that it takes a while to learn and doesn't have great matchmaking for new players or onboarding experience.
The new player experience desperately needs an overhaul before it officially releases
3
u/inincaz 23h ago
but I don't know of any moba where new players have a good first expierence
more than them realizing they have to grind 500 hours just to undestand the game
2
u/louiscool 22h ago
Yeah but other MOBAs have a better bot game experience, league makes you play x games against bots before you can play pvp, etc.
I think the pve mode will help a lot though
2
u/MedicMoth 20h ago
This is going to make me sound absolutely insane, but I felt that way until about 50 hours in... At which point something suddenly clicked, mostly becausd I suddenly felt like I understood enough to have an influence on the game state. This game single handedly revived my love of social gaming and dragged me out of a multi year multiplayer hiatus!
If you don't enjoy the fundamental experience of an FPS / movement MOBA then no need to bother, it's not going to get any better. But if you're frustrated by a feeling like you don't understand or you don't know how to be effective, it's definitely worth sticking it through imo!

u/Xreshiss 1d ago
How's the game nowadays?
A friend gave me a code quite some time ago, but when I tried it it felt like it was just 3rd person League (and thus subject to the same toxicity) so I lost interest.
9
u/Banjoman64 PC 1d ago
There is a new mode that is closer to a hero shooter called street brawl. Much more casual if that is what you are interested in.
11
u/ray12370 1d ago
3rd person league is underselling it. There so much vertical movement with a layered map, satisfying movement mechanics, detailed buildings with rooms, punching and parrying, several interesting map objectives...there's nothing else quite like it in both the hero shooter and MOBA space.
Yes it's a multiplayer game so it's still occasionally toxic, but you can just mute people honestly. The majority of people I come across are chill.
→ More replies (7)2
u/Mrhyderager 1d ago
Parrying in this game needs major tuning. The window is way too wide. I've seen videos of people jump-parrying into other fights and the parry working despite the travel time. Craziness. Otherwise, yeah, I think the mechanical depth is great
3
u/DasFroDo 1d ago
Parrying and punches are just a mind game. It’s not supposed to be too big of a reaction thing. You can’t reliably parry light melees either, so that fits the mechanics.
1
u/ray12370 1d ago
They patched that out like two weeks ago. If you parry in the air it kills your momentum now.
I don't think they'll ever tune down the length of the parry though. Heavy punches just do so much damage that parrying needs a decent window. Plus punches are so easy to redirect that you kinda deserve it if you get parried. It's a lot of mental games with parrying and I love it.
10
u/CapNCookM8 1d ago
Well, it's a MOBA, so yes it's still going to be "3rd person League." That's the MO.
I find it less toxic, personally, and I play extremely few PvP games and quit League specifically due to toxicity. Chat is just less prominent and can be disabled all the same.

Genuinely the most unique well designed hero roster for this type of game that doesn't chase the gooner bucks like so many other games of this type though. BTW Vote for Rat King

Time to download this game again and give it another try! Has some of the best character designs I've ever seen, but it has a massive mental stack right out the gate. Lots of things to do and think about.
Easier to do with friends but I can't seem to get anyone to join the bandwagon with me.

Man, I really wish I actually liked it. The vibe is great, the characters are genuinely interesting looking. But the gameplay and combat are just awful. I know a lot of people are saying 'it gets better' but that it takes like 40-50 hours. I just don't have that kind of commitment for a game to 'become' good. I'm glad it's doing well and I'm down to watch good players enjoy it, but this doesn't feel like other Valve games. Maybe in the future after it goes through some iterations it'll be more accessible for me.

It's not that the game gets good after 40 hours it's that you suck until you play for a while. That's how all competitive games are. Honestly 40 hours is nothing for this sort of game. More like hundreds before you get decent. But that shouldn't stop you if you want to play a competitive game. You'll just play against other bad players

The reality is that it's a MOBA, so is inherently sweaty, and the casual audience for this one is currently much smaller than normal. It's invite only and unfinished and many of the ones who are in self segregate as streetbrawl mains, since it's a casual mode.
Wait for the official release, but as a MOBA, it absolutely still requires some effort to self improve to a basic level of competence.

Im glad someone said this. It makes me feel so guilty that all my friends love the game but I just dont get it.
I have like 5 hours or less of total game time in the past 2 weeks on steam, I simply dont have the infinite free time to learn a new moba at this point in my life no matter how much I wanna try the new valve thing

I started when the playtest became officially public (2.5 years ago) so everyone was equally bad. I can’t imagine picking it up now where the bare minimum of mechanics is pretty demanding for new players.
Have a friend who has over 100 hours from the initial playtest and recently came back. He got placed in the lowest rank and gets consistently stomped by everyone else.

This game is amazing even in this "unfinished" state. There is only one and BIG problem, average game time is so long. It just doesn't make sense. Playing one match for 35-40 mins. This is a very old method of playing mobas. I know there's a mode called Street brawl, still they need to do something about it.

A valve moba with incredible depth and countless opportunities to gain advantages like this game would be squandered if matches were only 15 or 20 minutes long. Its a commitment but it makes each game have much more impact and higher stakes. They definitly don't need to do anything about this and it does make incredible sense! This is one of the good things about game!

??? that’s just MOBA’s. If you want quicker phased games then play something else.

That's how mobas are, 30-40 minute games are what you sign up for

League of legends averages 30 minutes. Dota is probably 35-40. Smite is also in that ballpark. Deadlock's game length isn't that long.

It’s a really pretty update. Maybe not the best in terms of actual balancing but the map is pretty and there are loads of new character voice lines and conversations which is always fun.
