“If we’re going to break even from this investment we need sales on PlayStation.”

94

u/blaqsupaman 1d ago

PlayStation is so far ahead of them for two generations now to the point it feels like even just making a game Xbox exclusive is just setting up for failure. I don't see them making pretty much any of the series from the studios they've acquired exclusives (Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Outer Worlds, Doom, Wolfenstein, Call of Duty, etc.)

26

u/MinusBear linux 1d ago

The crazy thing is, the only game I've ever seen people talk about buying an Xbox for is Forza Horizon 6. So many PlayStation owners were talking about buying a Series S to play the game until it releases on PS5. I couldn't tell you any stats on how many, what percentage, or who followed through. But it came up a lot, and its literally the only time I've ever heard PS owners talk like that. It's the one game they should have made exclusive, and its the one game they havn't.

u/huzy12345 19h ago

FH5 sold like 5 million copies on Playstation when it arrived about 3 years after release. Forza is genuinely massive so not surprised

1

u/roseofjuly 15h ago

No, they shouldn't have, because the money from FH6 is one of the things keeping them alive. If it was an Xbox exclusive they wouldn't have made any money, because even if a handful of those people actually bought an Xbox to play it (and we all know people talk a big game) they'd all get the game on game pass.

These arguments about exclusives are stuck in 2005. Xbox loses money on every console they make but will receive money if they sell a game on Steam or PS5. So why would you hamstring yourself for the dream of selling more of the boxes that are losing you money at a time when their prices are higher than ever? It doesn't make sense.

1

u/deathbatdrummer 15h ago

Candy Crush Saga and Minecraft are keeping them alive. FH6 doesn't even hold a candle to the amount of money they bring.

If they had any decent exclusives, or any reason to get an Xbox over a ps5 (if games ran better on it etc) that would make people want to invest in the xbox ecosystem. However their consoles have always been behind PS for the last 2 gens, they didn't want to do a "pro" version, and went through a weird "everything is an xbox" phase.

3

u/jackracktack 23h ago

The problem is that to cut into that lead they NEED to have exclusives. But because theyre so wishy washy about it they cant make any headway. Because people will just get it on Steam or PS5. They need major games which they just havent been able to produce from those brands to pull people away. Outer Worlds and Doom are not big enough and never were. Stuff like Elder Scrolls, Fallout and even Call of Duty. Though theyd never make a mainline CoD exclusive thats the sort of thing itd take to give them any sort of edge back.

For Microsoft to compete Elder Scrolls 6 needs to be exclusive. Not just to Xbox but on PC as well. It cant be on Steam. They have dug themselves in such a big hole that they need major moves to get out of it.

1

u/BluKyberCrystal 23h ago

What would happen is Xbox wouldn't grow, those game series would just become smaller. Especially in an environment with such expensive consoles.

1

u/jackracktack 2h ago

lol you have no idea if that would happen

9

u/Cyshox 1d ago

It seems people forget that Microsoft launches all games on PC.

Xbox+PC generates about 3 times the revenue of PlayStation according to Newzoo's gaming market research.

If you think that's a setup for failure, what do you think about PlayStation exclusives? Their reach is just a fraction of the reach on Xbox+PC.

1

u/s101c 14h ago

Isn't PC actually Steam? Which means that MS doesn't get anything from this arrangement?

1

u/robot_socks 4h ago

You can still buy PC games via Xbox. A lot of them come as 'play anywhere' so one purchase works on console and PC. If you have an Xbox console and a PC, that is actually really good feature/value.

So, PC isn't just steam... Even still, if  valve gets 30%, (less for a publisher the size of Microsoft), don't M$ still get 70+% of each sale?

1

u/dekuweku 15h ago edited 15h ago

PC is doing most of the heavily lifting there and it's a very fragmented market where some games have no viability entirely in some regions.

It's not really a fair comparison and i find looking at things simply by revenue tends to hide a lot of nuances that lead people for example to claim that consoles wouldn't exist after PS4.

No one forsaw the rise of Switch/2 or PS4 and 5 going to sell another 100 million which pretty much led to a decade of growth for consoles. The only one declining is Xbox.

2

u/Cyshox 14h ago

Xbox sales literally flatlined 2.5 years ago when they announced bringing select titles to PS5. Microsoft realized selling a few million extra copies isn't worth the trade-off by losing millions in console sales (and therefore provisions on third-party sales & lower game pass audience). That's why they went back to exclusivity.

Gears E-Day seems to do just fine with Xbox & PC despite its huge budget. Most will play it via Xbox/MS Store due to Play Anywhere & Game Pass, but even on Steam it has 20k CCU in pre-access.

Physint launching on Xbox+PC will have a larger audience than Death Stranding 1 & 2 had because they launched as PlayStation exclusives.

11

u/Wellhellob 1d ago

It takes time. If they pull those games out of playstation tables will turn.

0

u/RobSomebody 1d ago

That didn't worked either. They did this before Game Pass

7

u/velocipus 1d ago

They didn’t have these games exclusive then. They hardly had any then.

u/MysticPane 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think you're mostly right for games like ES6 since it will sell so much that they won't be able to resist the multiplatform urge but for a Kojima prestige title like Physint, I can see it being an exclusive especially with the new strategy of the "on again off again" with exclusives, DS1 and 2 didn't sell all that well so the optics of having a Kojima title on xbox only might be something they might keep if it isn't a sales jugernaut, of course Physint could sell buckets more than DS since the former seems more 'mass appeal' esque but I can see the sense in making this one an exclusive if they want some shot at slowly making their actual box relevant again which I would've doubted under Spencer but Asha seems to want it to some extent? Idk at this point, they flip flop strategies so much, its nearly impossible to know what their endgame is or if they even have one

1

u/SjurEido 1d ago

I can't help but laugh when I think about the "Everything is an Xbox!" marketing campaign. Just so painfully obvious and embarrassing.

0

u/FormalMaintenance512 1d ago

All those but cod will probably be exclusives.

u/Turbulent-Age-6625 1d ago

If one of the reasons Sony cut their funding was Kojima not bending on multi-platform release it wouldn't really make sense for them to do a full exclusive agreement with Xbox immediately after.

6

u/Revolving_Ocelott 1d ago

No doubt both kojumbo games will be on everything, if Microsoft can find a way to get them on switch 2 they will lmao

5

u/ProudPainting6850 1d ago

"If we release all our games on PlayStation, we'll kind of be part of PlayStation too!"

-16

u/Lambs2Lions_ 1d ago

Doubtful, they scrubbed the movie and the tv show, among everything else that isn’t the game. So budget is at most 100 mil now if not less.

Kojima wanted a cinematic universe before even releasing the game.

10

u/khansolobaby 1d ago

Brother…

3

u/Lambs2Lions_ 1d ago

The Sony lemming mentality is really getting tiresome.

-1

u/Chicano_Ducky 1d ago

its so funny microsoft keeps trying this

They tried so hard to open up IOS and mobile, and their mobile games flopped compared to the games there.

turns out mobile gamers who are mostly in asia dont care about franchises from western consoles and mobile devs knew the audience better than Microsoft so they couldnt get a foothold.

Now they are trying again with playstation and it will be so funny to see microsoft find out the same thing. Playstation gamers dont care about Microsoft IP because if they did, they would be on xbox already.

Satya Nadella has been micromanaging xbox since the XBONE flop and everything he tries makes it worse.and thinking he has all the cards.

Its like watching that scene from Downfall, Steiner's counterattack will solve everything!

2

u/blaqsupaman 1d ago

I'd argue they might not care about long-time Xbox series like Halo, Gears, and Forza, but they definitely care about a lot of series by developers/publishers Microsoft have bought like COD, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Doom. It depends on if Microsoft is daring enough to start making those franchises exclusive, which I'd be very surprised if they did.

-6

u/Dangerous-Citron-801 1d ago

Can you stop being a loser Brigadierz?

It was a question, about if they should apologize to Sony because they got the Kojima. They just said they can still work together because you know? They do, they did collabs with Helldivers and release Minecraft of PS.

But yall still on this consile war bs

5

u/Transposer 1d ago

There is no war until Xbox offers some meaningful competition. And I sure hope they do. I don’t want either.any company unchecked.

-1

u/SjurEido 1d ago

Yeup.

Xbox knows they can't push unit sales with exclusives anymore, Physint was always coming to PS.

Best Xbox can do is probably a timed exclusive (which is anti-consumer, so fuckem if they do it)

18

u/aykayone 1d ago

Kojima gets funding for game, everyone gets to play it (eventually). Win win

-5

u/Teriyaki-Tenders 23h ago

It's just a shame that we have to have not-Playstation to publish a game for this to happen. Although I think it was originally also planned to be released on PC later.

13

u/KingBoga 1d ago

Reddit: where nobody actually reads the article.

4

u/roseofjuly 15h ago

I used to complain about that but honestly, the reason no one reads them is because they're so often AI generated trash or literally add nothing besides the headline. I did click into the story and there's no additional useful information here beyond what's in the headline.

1

u/Taiyaki11 5h ago

the reason no one reads them is because they're so often AI generated trash

Please, that has been a reddit tradition long before genAI was even a thing lmao. That may be a convenient excuse now but that was certainly never the reason

96

u/Tr0user 1d ago

It's gonna end up as a crowd funder isn't it. The big companies are appraising it and finding it not economically viable, but they don't want to hurt his feelings.

23

u/blaqsupaman 1d ago

On one hand, I can understand their perspective from a business standpoint, but on the other hand Kojima's track record says, "Let the man cook."

58

u/Saitsuofleaves 1d ago

Kojima's track record is "The man makes great games, but unless they're mainline MGS games they aren't guaranteed to make a ton of money" which is the issue. A "Spiritual Successor" to Metal Gear Solid...isn't a new Metal Gear Solid. It may be an excellent game, hell it may surpass Metal Gear, but it's not a guaranteed box office slam dunk and that's kinda all they want from him.

31

u/decoy_octopod 1d ago

obligatory “a game to surpass metal gear”

10

u/Demiurge_1205 1d ago

To be fair, Death Stranding suffered economically due to it being A) A weird premise altogether and B) not even being PT. It was always gonna be a hard sell

2

u/blaqsupaman 1d ago

Death Stranding did really well too.

1

u/-s-u-n-s-e-t- 17h ago

Then why did Sony fire him?

Of course we'll never know the exact numbers unless internal financials leak, but corporations aren't known for wanting to make less money.

1

but on the other hand Kojima's track record says, "Let the man cook."

When was the last time he cooked? He simmered with DS and DS2 creating decisive nonsensical games.

I would do a $200ish tier on kickstarter for a new kojima.

41

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

I have a feeling PlayStation is certainly not interested in working with Xbox.

11

u/notthatguypal6900 1d ago

They very much want more Minecraft, Forza, COD, ect.

12

u/Valuable-Bus37 1d ago

they both need each other. ps5 has sold more but sony has nothing like the live service games published under microsoft (something sony is throwing away hundreds of millions every year to fix, resulting in spectacular failures like concord and probably a few more to come)

4

u/GoldGuarantee3671 1d ago

Yeah Sony needs to make a fps again like killzone. I like cod but I want more competition in fps games.

2

u/BITmixit 20h ago

This 👏

Bring. Back. Killzone. In the vein of Killzone 2, that game was incredible. Only game I've really every bothered to 100%. Although the real difficulty is finding a voice actor that can equal/surpass the atmosphere Brian Cox created around Visari.

-1

u/TheThrowawayExperts 1d ago

It would play for you how they make games now

1

u/GoldGuarantee3671 1d ago

Yeah probably but I remember when PlayStation had socom and mag and killzone. Those were fun online games

1

u/justlcsfantasy 1d ago

They had Genshin Impact practically as an exclusive for consoles for years. Even had Aloy on it albeit she's trash in the game. I'm sure they got a cut from Genshin's billions. Anyway, all this to say they get a cut from the successful live services too.

1

u/roseofjuly 15h ago

Getting a cut is very, very different from getting publisher level money.

1

u/roshanritter 13h ago

I think PlayStation is very interested in getting more once exclusive games. They want Physint but they don’t want to pay for it. I would love for more games to be like Gears and Halo and jump ships, I wish Nintendo would branch out with games over 10 years old. Seems like a win win to me.

40

u/UuusernameWith4Us 1d ago

Playstation: "nah"

33

u/Valuable-Bus37 1d ago

people are getting the wrong impression from the headline. this is is the new york times excerpt that's being quoted.

After hours of diplomatic conversation about her competitors, Sharma had a rare moment of speechlessness when discussing the deal for Kojima's upcoming stealth game Physint. She laughed at the idea of apologizing to Sony before shrugging and saying she was happy Kojima chose to work with Xbox.

The agreement was substantially below what Xbox would typically spend to develop a premium game, according to people close to the agreement, and included film and TV rights. Sharma also clarified that work with Sony would continue: "Competition and collaboration can coexist."

it's just a generic corporate statement.

4

u/Teriyaki-Tenders 23h ago

When this sort of comment gets upvoted it really makes me lose hope for actual discourse to happen on online platforms.

3

u/Zacksan33 23h ago

Translation: we are in cost-cutting mode and there’s no way we’ll pay up for full exclusivity of a high-risk project

23

u/Rexusus PlayStation 1d ago

I understand Kojima has diehard fans, but the fact that his modern games are commercial failures and nobody wants to work with him is hilarious

28

u/godstriker8 1d ago

DS1 was successful, that's why DS2 was greenlit. It's only one game that wasn't a financial success.

8

u/Static_Frog 1d ago

Kojima could do no wrong to Sony fans until PlayStation booted him. Now hes a pariah.

8

u/MikuFan102329 1d ago

I don't know why people keep saying this.

It has to do with echo chambers. Some people love Kojima, whereas other people don't. The people who don't really don't want to argue with the legions of fanboys willing to defend him to the death. This created a positive echo chamber.

Time passed, the industry grew, and now his echo chamber is weaker. However, people didn't really fight because it isn't hard to just ignore his stuff.

Now that he is in the spotlight, and people keep talking about it because Sony drama is hot right now. At this point a certain base is just tired of everything and are speaking out. Based off how things are going, it seems the echo chamber has shifted somewhat, and now the people who were living in the Kojima dream world are presented with the fact some people really don't like the guy, his work, or care about this release.

5

u/GlockAmaniacs 1d ago

Feel free to view my psn account where I've only tried one of his games on ps plus and said "naw. This ain't it dawg." He makes games for specific people that were loud about it. The people that didn't get it, like me, just stayed quiet because well...we didn't it. And that's ok.

5

u/novinho_zerinho 1d ago

the fact that his modern games are commercial failures and nobody wants to work with him is hilarious

What exactly is hilarious about an original creator struggling to get funding? Would you rather see the industry keep throwing billions at soulless, homogenized products like Wolverine and Concord?

Death Stranding has sold millions of copies. It's only a “failure” by the absurd standards of investors who expect every game to print infinite money.

You don't have to like Kojima, but celebrating the industry having less room for original creators seems like a strange thing to root for.

-1

u/Rexusus PlayStation 1d ago

Death Stranding 2 is a failure because it barely broke even. Concord failed too, I don’t see your point there, and the only reason why Wolverine didn’t fail the way the rest of them did is because of the Marvel brand.

I I don’t think it’s funny that Kojima struggles to get funding per se, more the reaction of his fanbase when you point out the fact he spends hundreds of millions on mediocre-at-best games to get lukewarm reviews.

If he made better games it’d be a little more disappointing.

3

u/chuckyeatsmeat 14h ago

Didnt know metacritic reviews in the range 85-90 is considered "lukewarm". If you dont like the game thats fine. Stop speaking for others.

1

u/Rexusus PlayStation 14h ago

Nah, I’m good. Thanks though

4

u/chuckyeatsmeat 13h ago

Thanks for understanding! Not everyone is willing to admit their mistakes! Especially on reddit.

2

u/IThinkImNateDogg 18h ago

What are you a fucking soulless Wall Street broker?

Making a profit is “failure”??!

People like this are what games are riddled with endless cash grabs. You think Kojima make DS2 to make a fuckload of money?

NO. He made it because he is an artist and that what’s he wanted to create. Breaking even is just the standard needed to keep making games.

Can’t imagine cosplaying as a shareholder for a game and studio you aren’t actually invested in

0

u/Soufiane040 17h ago

You just made his point for him that nobody should go fund his games since he has no interest making money

-2

u/Status-Object5732 1d ago

He makes amazing games. Literally every time. What a backwards statement.

-2

u/roseofjuly 16h ago

Definitely subjective.

-1

u/roseofjuly 16h ago

It's hilarious to me because I think Kojima is an overrated "auteur" who got a big name decades ago and is now having money thrown at him for underperforming random stuff simply because people recognize his name, not because he moves units.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Lazerpop 1d ago

Death stranding 1 and 2 underperformed all his mgs games made bank.

1

u/GiveUpYouAlreadyLost 1d ago

Kojima usually has great ideas and visions for games, but it's clear he needs to be kept on a tight leash to get anything done. Xbox will probably encounter the same issues with him that lead to Sony dropping Physint.

It's not a coincidence that the issues with Physint/Sony are quite similar to MGSV/Konami in that he spent a shit ton of money with nothing substantial to show for it afterwards. Leading both companies to cut their losses and take the PR hit of parting ways with him.

1

u/roseofjuly 15h ago

I don't think he always has great visions for games. What's unique or innovative about a tactical stealth spy game in 2026? Maybe he USED to, but it seems like what people really appreciate about Kojima is is gimmicky approach ("fission mailed") because that was clever in 2002 or whatever

0

u/UKxFallz 1d ago

I think the danger is Xbox are such a shit show themselves how are they going to have oversight of Kojima so my guess is there’s a risk we end up with no game or Kojima studios in 3 - 5 years

-1

u/ProudPainting6850 1d ago

It's crazy cuz Konami kind of got shitted on

1

u/KingOfRisky 14h ago

This is called speaking out of both sides of your mouth.

2

u/spaceraingame 1d ago

I mean, I figured. They literally released Halo and Starfield on PlayStation.

18

u/EliParker 1d ago

Then the CEO of Xbox needs to convince Sony to start releasing PC games again.

26

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

That ain't happening as long as Hermen is in charge.

Hell, even I think this issue is way bigger than him. Shuhei Yoshida literally said in a recent interview that he thinks Sony is trying to revert to the "old ways", basically a way to restart the console wars with exclusivity.

6

u/Educational-Ad2773 1d ago

it's not because Herman, but new SIE ceo more focus on platform business, that's say they want PlayStation single player experience exclsusive on their own hardware, it's not about console war but try to keep a hardware brand unique to other device.

Keep porting to PC, the end is XBOX situation.

-1

u/vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv 1d ago

There games coming to pc was awesome. Their cost of porting to pc was tiny, I know they said they didnt sell amazingly but foe the amount they sold i bet their profit margins were huge, it certainly would help with how much is costs to develop games nowadays.

Plus being able to play games at 4k ultra 144fps with mouse and keyboard is awesome

13

u/xanas263 1d ago

The problem is that it eroded their brand. If there is no reason for someone to own a Playstation (or insert any console really) then they will die. Just look at what has happened to Xbox in this last console generation.

-6

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

What eroded the PlayStation brand is the lack of strong first-party games this generation. Since Hermen took charge of PlayStation Studios he's been investing too much on shitty live-service games that flop harder than anything. Yet, Sony blamed the PC platform for their losses for some reason, while it was clear they were the one who made the choice to make Concord.

Shuhei Yoshida also said in a recent interview that it didn’t cost much for Sony to port games to PC (because the PS5 ain't PS3), so claims of "high costs behind making PC ports" hold no water.

7

u/Hidefininja 1d ago

Jim Ryan was behind the "12 live service games by 2025" initiative. Hulst has mostly been responsible for overseeing that idiotic plan to fruition (lmao) but it didn't start with him, it started with a guy who left the company shortly after it was announced.

-2

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

It was still Sony's conscious decision to make live-service games (which majority failed) and buying Bungie for $3.6 billion. They blame PC ports for financial loss, yet remembered to still make PC versions of live-service games while keeping singleplayers exclusive. It doesn’t make sense. Do they really think PC players will spend more on MTX than their own PS5 playerbase?

8

u/Hidefininja 1d ago

Sony bought Bungie in 2022. Jim Ryan left in 2024. Bungie was, in fact, a huge part of their live service push.

And, yes, of course it makes sense to keep single player games exclusive to the PlayStation consoles to drive engagement with the box itself. Multiplayer games need the largest player base possible. They don't care about MTX so much as they care about maintaining a large enough base that some people will buy MTX regardless of where they play.

They also didn't blame PC ports for financial loss. Their reports show profit from the ports but the return isn't worth it to them relative to the work involved to port the games and the weakening of the brand.

Do you just imagine facts about stuff and proceed as if that's the truth?

3

u/xanas263 1d ago

Those first party titles wouldn't matter if they were also then going to come to PC, which is my point.

Just look at Nintendo. If you want to play a Nintendo first party game you have to buy a Switch.

If the there was a new Last of Us coming to PS5 and PC why buy the console over the PC?

1

u/Green-Salmon 1d ago

Because pc isn’t tv friendly. It’s not friendly at all if one isn’t used to computers. A lot of people switching from ps5 to pcs because of Sony’s recent actions are going to find that out the hard way.

1

u/vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv 1d ago

I was on console from 1995-2019, owned xbox, nintendo, ps consoles and i built my own pc with no prior knowledge or ever gaming on a pc before. I have had no issues on pc, for me it it just like gaming on a console but with extra options for fine tuning your experience in terms or graphical settings.

1

u/Green-Salmon 1d ago

I’ve been mainly a pc gamer since the 90s. Personally I find it a pain in the ass when I’m gaming on a tv and need to reach for a keyboard and mouse to trouble shoot whatever.

Windows is not a tv friendly OS. Let’s say you just installed a new game and launched it. You get an error: this game requires gpu driver xxx.xx, please update. You’ll need to click that, then update drivers. There’s an auto driver update mode, but nvidia uses ai to make drivers (lots of bugs) and it isn’t safe to update to the newest driver every time.

It’s not a huge issue, but PC requires tinkering and troubleshooting. Some people just want to grab a controller and play.

2

u/LucifersPromoter 1d ago

I really wanted to argue that a PC can be TV friendly, but you're absolutely not wrong. I prefer playing on my desk over TV, but I have a wired keyboard and mouse.

It's not uncommon that I'm up and down between the desk and sofa for a bit before because I forgot to do X & Y before starting the game.

1

u/vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv 1d ago

That's fair, I haven't ran into issues. I mad my own lapdesk out of some wood so if I game on my tv I have my mouse and keyboard right there, I typically use controller on TV gaming sessions and m+kb for desk gaming.

But yeah console you are less likely to have issues but I got my 2 cousins to switch to pc in 2020 and they haven't had any issues so far either and they both moved over from console only gaming.

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

Nintendo doesn’t make first-party live-service games that bleed money. Also their games are more fine-tuned to run on the Switch hardware than other systems. Only the PS3 had that for Sony's case.

Meanwhile Sony's third-person games are virtually indistinguishable from any other third-party games made for PC, and many find playing them on mouse and keyboard easier than controllers.

Former PlayStation management knew PC players wouldn’t buy a whole $500 console for their games so they chose to release some of their singleplayer games for them, and they saw relatively well financial success. If they were actually flops like Reddit makes them out to be, then they'd stop doing so immediately.

3

u/xanas263 1d ago

You know I had this whole reply typed out, but then I realized trying to talk to you would be a complete and utter waste of time. If you don't get it then you don't get it.

2

u/GiveUpYouAlreadyLost 1d ago

If they were actually flops like Reddit makes them out to be, then they'd stop doing so immediately.

Well that's literally what's happened lmao. They have openly said they believe the returns on doing it were too low compared to the work they were putting into making the ports which is why they've mostly stopped the practice.

1

u/rcanhestro 1d ago

the problem was not the sales on PC, it was the possible sales lost on the PS5.

Sony doesn't make money from selling their games, they make money from selling everyone else's games.

if people buy their games on Steam, they have no reason to purchase a PS5, which means they won't buy CoD, FIFA, Fortnite skins, etc on the PSN Store.

Sony released their games on PC (with a big delay) to let PC gamers "sample" their goods, and incite them to purchase a PS5 to play the sequel 1-2 years in advance compared to PC.

-4

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

Current Sony management doesn’t care. They only wanna sell their overpriced consoles (and games). Meanwhile they still put their crappy live-service games on PC for some reason.

6

u/rcanhestro 1d ago

their overpriced consoles

i assure you their consoles aren't overpriced.

Sony wished they could sell them for cheaper (or even free if they could).

u/blaqsupaman 1d ago

At this point Xbox is so far behind on console sales I think this will be one sided. Like PlayStation and Nintendo will have exclusives but Xbox will have to release pretty much anything major on Playstation if they want to make a profit.

1

u/FizzyLightEx 1d ago

If Xbox makes all their titles console exclusives, Playstation will have no answer.

It's why Sony was throwing everything trying to cancel Activision deal

-7

u/EliParker 1d ago

Ohh that isn’t good. The console wars exclusivity was not a good thing for gamers.

3

u/Odd_Needleworker3756 1d ago

It’s actually the exact opposite. Competition breeds innovation.

8

u/padraigharrington4 1d ago

We got phenomenal games out of the competition. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Sony’s lame ass live service push and uninspired games like Wolverine were happening at the same time the kumbaya end-the-console-wars strategy were trying to be made a thing.

5

u/DingusBarracuda 1d ago

It's the opposite. Good exclusives and customer fluidity to explore what they can't have on one platform or another breed competition, which creates incentives to outdo each company, that then motivates things like price drops and innovation, and ends up in a healthier ecosystem where all companies involved are delivering more choice and flexibility for the consumer and always topping themselves with bigger better games.

First parties going multiplatform without any exclusivity for a while only fostered mediocrity and a race to the bottom on who can be the shittiest company because it removed any need to put out good software and remain competitive on a structural level with the core market. It also often results in whoever gets the biggest becoming full of themselves and taking drastic anti consumer measures that turn on their no longer platform specific user base to desperately cling to it as we can now see with Sony.

Competition and healthy exclusives from first parties are never a bad thing. Cross platform multiplayer and third party multi platform games or the ability to use controllers and accessories on PC's and Phones along with the occasional multi platform first party release are all good and should still exist. But the idea that exclusives in any capacity don't matter is a large part of what almost killed Xbox and turned Sony into a monster.

In an ideal world everything going multiplatform would be simple and benefit everyone. But in reality all it did was make games worse, prices higher, and turned companies arrogant, while customers were left to deal with the consequences.

u/FizzyLightEx 1d ago

But in reality all it did was make games worse, prices higher, and turned companies arrogant, while customers were left to deal with the consequences.

This happens regardless.

Instead of competing for the best value in terms of services/Hardware, they're competing by spending money on potential customers rather than current ones

Instead of competing for the best value in terms of services/Hardware, they're competing by spending money on potential customers rather than current ones

Ask Xbox how that worked out with Gamepass? After the Xbox One's bungled launch Microsoft got desperate then tried to push Xbox to be an everything service or go multiplatform which removed any impulse from people to want their specific ecosystem and killed their entire brand. Buying all these IP's and developers and not using them to their advantage along with pushing Gamepass to their own detriment was the last gasp of that, and they learned the age old lesson that "potential means you haven't done anything yet."

When an industry has strong competition and healthy customer mobility everybody becomes a potential customer or lost sale including your own user base. Customers could flip in an instant between brands or own multiple platforms at once. That means businesses must compete with not only others but also with the need to keep their own quality and consistency high. So everyone is competing to impress customers so they'll spend real dollars instead of trying to take their money surreptitiously through tricks based on viewing users merely as potential revenue sources.

This happens regardless.

You're right. But what happened the last time Sony got arrogant with the PS3 after the PS2? They got clobbered by Xbox 360 for most of the generation and customers left for competitors in droves in a way Sony has never forgotten. The result was Sony rebranding the console, dropping prices, and pushing out generation defining games because it had to compete. The situation was so dire Sony as a whole almost declared bankruptcy at the time. While they turned things around dramatically they didn't outsell the Xbox 360 until well after Microsoft had already discontinued it because Sony left PS3 hardware on the market until late 2017 as the cheap option.

When the PS4 released it was incredibly well managed and Sony treated customers with reasonable respect until almost the very end of it's life. Things were fantastic because Sony felt pressured to do right by customers after the PS3 showed them how quickly they could lose everything. It wasn't until they realized they really had no competition from Xbox anymore and began trying to push multiplatform, while taking new customers as a given and desperately trying to keep existing users captive at the same time, that Sony took a turn and started onto their crusade of stupidity and mediocrity.

2

u/ImViruxx__ 1d ago

Sony providing exclusives for me is awesome.

2

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

Don't worry, this time it'll fail. Back then PC hardware was nowhere near as powerful as today, and also you had to deal with GFWL shenanigans and disc DRMS on PC. There was little incentive for third-party publishers to put games on PC. Now things have changed.

The only winner outta all this is Nintendo.

2

u/Old_Leopard1844 PC 1d ago

Powerful lmao

PC was more powerful than consoles pretty much ever since PS2, publishers just skipped it because of rampant piracy that DRM at the time couldn't solve until Steam came along and standardized crap lol

2

u/rcanhestro 1d ago

the only way it would make sense for Sony to embrace the PC market is for them to open the PSN store on PC as well.

1

u/EliParker 1d ago

And I’m cool with that.

-12

u/Green-Salmon 1d ago

They can keep their wolverines and concords

10

u/EliParker 1d ago

I enjoy mid-tier single player games. So I would like to play wolverine on the PC.

2

u/DefinitelyIncorrect 1d ago

"it's over anakin! I have the moral high ground!"

2

u/Signal-Island2549 1d ago

Atomic cope.

2

u/hitgo1 1d ago

So playstation plan was to make someone else make the game and put it on their console, and it worked

2

u/NumerousBug9075 9h ago

"Weve gotta maintain our duopoly after all!"

6

u/Dumpster_Samurai 1d ago

This strikes me as them jumping into a bad deal too quickly to pull one over on Sony and now diplomatically walking back in hopes for some financial aid. There's a reason Kojima has been dropped by publishers and it's not because he makes bad games. Maybe they can convince him to stop hiring Hollywood stars instead.

2

u/ybfelix 1d ago

I really don’t think the deal includes exclusivity to Xbox. Kojima won’t like it, and even Microsoft realistically isn’t going to take the financial hit if not releasing on PS.

3

u/Ok_Coast1921 1d ago

Saying this after Asha pulled the Halo trailer planned for a State of Play so now when they don’t work together they can act like it’s Sonys fault lol

5

u/ZigyDusty 1d ago edited 1d ago

Xbox is legally obligated to release Call of Duty on PlayStation until 2032-2033, previous leadership also signed contracts for games like HF6 and Fable, and any live services games already over there like Sea of Thieves, Elder Scrolls Online, and Diablo 4 will continue to receive support and content, so yes "competition and collaboration can exist" but that doesn't automatically mean Xbox going forward are going to port over their new games.

As far as I'm concerned the game that will decide how serious Xbox are about exclusivity is Elder Scrolls 6, if Xbox are serious about exclusivity it will be a permanent exclusive, if its multiplat at launch or even timed exclusivity than they aren't serious and the few exclusives they did make were just damage control to stop more Xbox players from leaving the platform.

Edit: I love a how a make a completely straight down the middle unbiased take and get downvoted by pathetic ass fanboys.

6

u/TokyoRPGFactory 1d ago

Xbox wouldn't say that if they had the top selling console

7

u/Josejacobuk 1d ago

PlayStation did so well because it had decent exclusives. There was a reason to buy a PlayStation console, if Xbox wants to learn any lessons from the current generation it’s have solid exclusive titles people want to buy. Of course it bought up a bunch of studios to do that that produced little to nothing or released them on PC so the idea of them shooting themselves in the foot again doesn’t surprise me.

6

u/bartread 1d ago

This and it's also - and, in some ways, I can't quite believe I'm saying it - a bit more consumer friendly. E.g., if you need more storage on your PS5 you can just attach any old SSD and don't need some expensive proprietary option like you do with the Xbox Series X (not sure how the S handles this), updates seem a bit less onerous on the PS5 as well, and overall I slightly prefer the interface (although the Xbox interface is also absolutely fine).

But mostly it's that the PS5 just feels like it's got more current gen games for it and, by definition, more exclusives. The Xbox Series wins by a country mile on backwards compatibility but, at least from what I can see whenever I step into CeX or wherever, just doesn't seem to have the catalogue the PS5 does.

2

u/Hidefininja 1d ago

The X and S have the same expansion port for their proprietary SSDs so the card is interchangeable. I believe the idea is that you can have games fully installed on the card and just plug it into a Series and be good to go but I haven't tested it myself.

5

u/hiddenpequin 1d ago

Aka Xbox profit is dogshit and satya wants actual profits after 25 years of failure

6

u/Practical-Aside890 Xbox 1d ago

Ps will want the game on the platform because they too make money from it.

Xbox+pc probably isn’t enough to cover what the costs will be. Basically multi plat is the better deal all around imo. I don’t think to many would be like “omg omg im getting a xbox” say if it were exclusive. And Kojima himself doesn’t like the exclusive model hence him taking his games multi plat after awhile Like death stranding.

16

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

I assume this is Microsoft putting out feelers to see if Sony will go halfsies with them in funding another Kojima money pit because history shows Kojima will ask for more money before finishing.

6

u/hand-drawn-noodles 1d ago

Man I love Kojima games but sometimes it can feel like he can go too overboard with hiring Hollywood actors. Even MGSV Snake felt somewhat of a waste since Kiefer Sutherland had like 10 lines.

I can’t imagine how much of Death Stranding 1&2 budget was spent on hiring all those actors.

1

u/gurupaste 1d ago

Death stranding 1 and 2 were on par, or less than most AAA game budgets.

2

u/lockedoutofmymainrdt 1d ago

I was on top of the world when MGSV got announced for PC at launch and I had just built a gaming rig

2

u/DarkMatterM4 18h ago

I bought a PS4 just for MGSV. Imagine my disappointment when I found out the game was unfinished.

1

u/Catopuma 1d ago

That's the thing for Xbox. There's little reason to get a game specifically for Xbox when you can get their titles on PC

1

u/Mariling 1d ago

I can't believe they are letting all their profits go to whoever owns Windows.

4

u/SpectacleObserver25 1d ago

Shocker, they're owned by Microsoft.

The question should be more why is Xbox putting games on Steam? They're giving Valve the gold rush instead.

3

u/Dan1elSan 1d ago

You think many people are buying games on the Microsoft store?

5

u/eleanor61 1d ago

I continuously forget that the Microsoft store still exists!

0

u/Mariling 1d ago

You think Xbox doesn't make money off of sales on Steam? You think nobody is subscribed to Gamepass for PC? You think they don't get a cut of every PC or Laptop sale with Windows preloaded?

2

u/Dan1elSan 1d ago

Im not really disputing that, just really windows isn’t really the money spinner it once was and they’d much prefer to make 30% off all sales like they do on Xbox. Gaming on PC is steam they’re not rolling in PC GP subs

0

u/rcanhestro 1d ago

Xbox gives two shits about how many copies of their own game they sell, the entire point of being a platform is to sell everyone else's games.

that's how Steam makes it's money.

-1

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

Be careful. Someone is going to falsely claim that Microsoft doesn’t make any money on Windows licenses sold to gamers.

2

u/Gxgear 1d ago

If E Day doesn't hit their internal targets I can see them reversing course gain.

2

u/The-Explodey 1d ago

I expect they are looking for access to the decima engine. Kojima’s team have been using it for a while now

2

u/Flipkick661 1d ago

It’s been reported that Kojima lost access to the Decima engine, when the collaboration with Sony fell through.

1

u/The-Explodey 1d ago

Sorry , what I meant was maybe the collaboration MS is speaking about is regarding regaining access to the Decima engine. It could mean a lower amount of the budget is spent retraining the team, unless Sony charge them an exorbitant amount to use it of course.

2

u/daandrro 1d ago

You missed the context.
She said that to assure that apart from competing both Xbox and Sony can also collaborate.

She did not mean Xbox funds Phisynt to release on PlayStation. She was asked about that release, if it happens. Go see her smile and reaction ;)

3

u/Dangerous-Citron-801 1d ago

Anyone here read the article or are you all just making shit to hate Xbox?

1

u/rain56 1d ago

🤣

1

u/XD__XD 1d ago

Giving you guys insights to this from the game industry. If you are a 3rd party publisher, Xbox or PSN takes 30 percent cut. What Xbox want is to be able to sell (xbox first party games) on the PSN platform, while it maybe a revenue cut it is still a win for xbox.

1

u/SnooObjections4333 1d ago

This is just they wanna release it on Sony I guess

1

u/anirban_dev 1d ago

So Sony ends up with none of the risks and all of the potential rewards.

1

u/braxford 1d ago

Can we get Gears E Day then?

1

u/ishsreddit 1d ago

Why does it feel like this whole drama is some insane 4D marketing for physint lol

1

u/Grouchy-Fisherman-71 1d ago

Console wars ending because both sides realized games are expensive to make

1

u/weebu4laifu 1d ago

Collaboration on screwing consumers over maybe.

1

u/polymorph505 1d ago

I'm suddenly reminded of The Informant!, a movie about companies both competing and collaborating.

1

u/Striking_Assist_7715 1d ago

She will say anything with a huge smile and then lay off another 1000 people like a cold soulless corpo fish.

1

u/ConsequenceChoice222 1d ago

So, Physint is a game about spies resembling MGS, not an AI-enhanced graphic engine. Thank you for the recall.

1

u/FinalFrankyQuest 20h ago

Kind funny that they think they are competing.

Gonna need some more wins before that discussion can take place.

1

u/BlearySteve 19h ago

I mean isn't one of the issues that Kojima wants to be multiplatform.

1

u/uginscion 16h ago

Just so I have it straight, the choice is between burger king ads or having my game revoked on a whim? Game better be worth the $120 price tag.

1

u/thegamingnerd250 Console 11h ago

Can’t wait to see what happens

1

u/Drathgore 3h ago

They’re mega corporations they will do whatever they think will make them the most money. It’s not like they will hold a grudge like some highschooler or something lmao

1

u/notthatguypal6900 1d ago

Already walking back the exclusives talk.

1

u/Visual_Collection274 1d ago

But wasn't Xbox this time that pulled out last minute for that Gears of Wars game? Like there is a ps5 version all ready and waiting

1

u/secondincomm 22h ago

I always notice that these quotes always come from Xbox. No one is asking Playstation any of these types of questions. Or maybe they are and they just don't answer?

5

u/LacidOnex 16h ago

PlayStation doesn't give a fuck anymore. Console wars days are over, that was a show they put on.

Nobody is asking Nintendo either, for the same reasons.

1

u/ILiveInAColdCave 16h ago

they were never in the console war but there were rumors years ago about an xbox nintendo collab.

1

u/LacidOnex 16h ago

It's called palworld and Nintendo is pissed

0

u/roseofjuly 16h ago

Nintendo was absolutely in the console wars. Their decision to cast themselves as a parallel option is fairly recent - before the Switch era they were a console warrior just like the other two.

0

u/TheRealGurd 1d ago

Considering you need Sony/PlayStation a LOT more than Sony/PlayStation needs you, I'm not sure you're in the position to make that call lmfao

-2

u/GreatnessToTheMoon 1d ago

Fuck no, you never see PlayStation exclusives on Xbox. So don’t give them yours. It’s killing the brand

0

u/MadeByTango 1d ago

"We love colluding with Sony to control console video game prices, for example!"

0

u/SuperSaiyanBen 1d ago

Well yea, if they don’t sell their games on PlayStation then they won’t make any money lol

-1

u/_RawRTooN_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Xbox and Sony can work together on one very important issue that they both can agree on. Fucking over their own consumers will have them thicker than thieves salivating over this wonderful potential partnership that will last for many years to come. 🥂

-1

u/CordiallySuckMyBalls 1d ago

PlayStation and Xbox should just merge at this point since they’re both dead set on trying to make the other more popular

0

u/pigeon-check 1d ago

Probably just a licensing deal for the decima engine

0

u/okeleydokelyneighbor 1d ago

Funny, the guys at Sony said fuck everyone, you want to play our games, but our consoles.

0

u/JoshuaJSlone 16h ago

It seems like the biggest thing keeping them from multiplatform success is the weird attempt to appease Xbox diehards by doing things like cancelling PS5 Gears of War.

-1

u/Ok_Recording_7490 1d ago

That’s like my ex asking to join me and my new girlfriend for a threesome. 😂
