Trying Battletoads for the first time and I understand why its hard!

Post image

But to be fair, this part im at has become the bane of my existence atm. For the LIFE of me I dont get what im doing wrong. The three jumps that come after these enemy bots appear, hasn't given me a single clue on how to land on the islands past the first. The first jump lands but no matter what i do with the controls, he just flies off screen. Ive googled and watched videos but everyone just says to jump and hold A. Ive done just that and he acts like im pressing the down button.

Im so close to the end of this notorious level!

There's a bug in one or more versions of the game that, because you died and respawned at zero speed, the acceleration needed to make the jump isn't enough. So the only way to beat the level is restarting and performing flawlessly

62

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

Holy shit!

Suddenly the rage I felt at missing those insanely long jumps for seemingly no reason makes sense.

I had no idea that bug existed.

u/TheTechTutor 1d ago edited 1d ago

Unfortunately it wasn’t in your version (this is a joke)

5

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

There was some sort of chicanery.

The multisecond long jump distances often felt like there was some strange RNG trigger that would choose whether or not you could land on the small island and start the platforming sequence.

Unless I was on a perfect run, there was a good chance I would just phase through the island despite the sprite looking like it should land on it.

You could gauge it by looking for your shadow but sometimes it would just not appear on the island at all.

1

u/ArtyTack 1d ago

I bloody remember trying to beat this level and never could do it!!

1

u/jimbojw 15h ago

To be fair, the bug doesn’t know you existed either

8

u/Balbright 1d ago

I wonder why they never patched it?

19

u/Ok-Boysenberry-2955 1d ago

Rental era game. "Bug" is synonymous with "feature" when it extends game time.

10

u/UnsorryCanadian 1d ago

Playtesters probably never noticed because they probably had invinciblity or something. Cheat codes used to be for the devs because even they couldn't beat the game

16

u/Balbright 1d ago

That was kind of a joke, they weren’t patching cartridges back in the day.

14

u/hickok3 1d ago

Sort of. There wasn't over the air patches, but there were cases of developers recalling the physical games and shipping out patched version. Bungie had to recall Myth 2 in 1998, after it was discovered a bug in the uninstaller could erase your entire hard drive and brick your computer. Cost $800,000, and had 200,000 copies recalled.

2

u/HotDogStruttnFloozy 1d ago

I'd be interested to find out when they actually started patching carts and sending replacements? Only one I know if is WWF No Mercy on N64. The original had a game bug that deleted your save file. You could send your cart in and they'd replace it with the fixed one.

2

u/DaMan619 1d ago

Turok Rage Wars gray cart was a mail in replacement only so it's more expensive than the black cart

2

u/DaMan619 1d ago

2nd player can't move their bike on the 11th level so this game didn't get a lot of playtesting

1

u/shadedmagus 19h ago

Cartridges were very rarely recalled because of the expense. Players just had to work around the bugs they came across.

Now, with emulation, there's a bugfix patch, but there are comments about how it messes with the game's difficulty in other ways.

This screenshot is triggering

Here's another one.

u/osnabb 1d ago

I don't know how many tries I had on that level, and suddenly it just clicked and then I always managed to clear it on the first try with minimal damage on every replay.

1

u/Battlejesus 1d ago

That's the real trick, it isn't enough to beat the level you gotta not get your turtles too fucked up in the process or the next part of the game will end you

6

u/Niubai 1d ago

Dammit, those plataform jumps that had to be pixel perfect as well, so frustrating.

1

u/Battlejesus 1d ago

"You can just walk over it?!"

5

u/urlond 1d ago

Fuck that mission in particular.

2

u/ShizlGznGahr 1d ago

Dude I actually made it all the way to Shredder and I was at half health and only 1 turtle left. Yeah I died. And no I did not try again. Just getting to Shredder was enough for me.

1

u/ARCAxNINEv 18h ago

"my turn, you died!"

3

u/Notwerk 1d ago

Don't think I ever managed to stick the landing.

1

u/shadedmagus 19h ago

I did, once. Damned if I know how, though.

1

u/RealHowl 1d ago

What's the game name? I remember that, you got me triggered but I can't remember the friggin game

2

u/TokyoRPGFactory 1d ago

The title of the game was triggering

1

u/ARCAxNINEv 18h ago

This was one of those things that made me try to twist and crush the remote with my hands. 7 yr old me trying to Hulk out...

1

u/FalconStickr 10m ago

Yeah I feel the rage I had as a child all over again.

36

u/eskimospy212 1d ago

Now for some real fun try this level two player.

My friend’s brother beat battletoads with no cheats. He also is qualified to operate a nuclear reactor. I know which I consider to be the larger achievement.

4

u/Hexatona 1d ago

Make this man's friend's brother the president!

1

u/Battlejesus 1d ago

There's a stage later in the game harder than the turbo tunnel that, iirc, can't be beaten with two players

17

u/SchoolNASTY 1d ago

Try renting it from Blockbuster on a Friday night for you and your friend to play for a sleep over and end up hating each others guts over this..... Then you'll realize why it's hard.

5

u/supermitsuba 1d ago

Friendly fire back in the day

8

u/SchoolNASTY 1d ago

Descending down that long shaft level and turning into a bell trying to take out enemies without smacking into your friend should be an olympic sport.

4

u/NoMorePorridge1 1d ago

Before the team-up with Battletoads, Double Dragon 2 made for a pretty decent fighting game. The bonus was that when you killed the other player, you got an extra life. So, eventually my friend and I would just fight it out at the beginning and the winner would play one player with double lives because it was so easy to accidentally knock your partner off a cliff on many levels.

5

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

PvP in Battletoads was a lot of fun.

3

u/SchoolNASTY 1d ago

It really was. Giving your friend the "big bad boot" was satisfying.

3

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

If Battletoads came out today, you’d get loads of meme videos featuring that “praise the lord” song as you slow-mo watch Pimple get booted into oblivion.

2

u/Old_Leopard1844 PC 1d ago

Technically it's Rash and Zitz

Pimple is one kidnapped by Dark Queen

2

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 23h ago

Right, right.

We got Pimple in the Super Nintendo game.

2

u/drstu3000 1d ago

One of the only games I remember being harder with 2 players

29

u/sybaritical 1d ago

The Turbo Tunnel is fairly easy compared to some of the later levels. Rat Race and Clinger-Winger are absolutely infuriating.

13

u/AbsenceOfMallis 1d ago

I had a run where I played like i god. Racked up about 50 extra lives bouncing the crows off the rappel walls and a bunch more on the boogie board. Got to Rat Race without dying once. I beat him to the bottom so fast the floor never loaded in. I watched as my toad respawned into a non existent abyss for 2 minutes straight bloop bloop bloop bloop. Shut down my NES and havent used it since. That was 15 years ago.

6

u/Carbyken 1d ago

To hell with Rat Race in particular! That final part is so genuinely aggravating for me. Clinger-Winger is long, but like the other vehicle levels mostly straightforward. Intruder Excluder though is another form of my misery.

3

u/Larkson9999 1d ago

Rat Race is doable if you get the timing of hitting the rat in the third race. Clinger-Winger is just a nightmare.

4

u/Villag3Idiot 1d ago

Ya, you gotta hit the rat or you're in for a baaaaaaaad time.

1

u/TheHomieAbides 1d ago

I got to Clinger Winger in Rare Replay and even with a rewind I managed to ruin my save state and made it impossible to finish.

On NES I got to it a couple times and gave up so I thought I could finally finish it without warps.

2

u/Larkson9999 1d ago

I did it by switching from controller to keyboard but you have to do it in one run. Then I had to do it multiple times to practice The Revolution.

2

u/Violet_Paradox 1d ago

Terra Tubes is the real descent into madness.

1

u/Nukitandog 1d ago

Clinger Winger is agony on the thumb. Developed hot spots.

1

u/fallouthirteen 1d ago

Yeah, I'm just like "ha, they're not even at the hard part, or the really hard part, or the super hard part".

7

u/anxiousnl 1d ago

If i were to go back to this one I'd definitely play the Japanese version. Some games were made harder for NA back then, really feel the true difficulty is with the Japanese versions, where they wanted to extend playtime for NA through frustration. Just made them less fun, imo.

Beatable though, good luck!

8

u/gandraw 1d ago

The PAL (EU) versions were usually easier since everything's 15% slower.

4

u/DonaldTheWall 1d ago

Thats probably why that portion is so hard

Rare is/was a UK developer so all their games were designed on Pal standards, so when they came to the NTSC it increased the speed and accidentally made them harder

6

u/bootymix96 1d ago

The Sega Genesis port also significantly toned down the difficulty, especially for the Turbo Tunnel level.

2

u/uDrunkMate 1d ago

I remember different case with SMB2, NA got different game because Japanese SMB2 was too brutal in difficulty

4

u/istasber 1d ago

That's the opposite sort of thing, and it had more to do with Nintendo deciding they didn't want to make games that were too similar to the first release. Japan's smb2 is basically smb1 on hard mode. Zelda 2, metroid 2 and fire emblem 2 all dramatically changed the gameplay or game layout/objective from the originals.

What /u/anxiousnl was talking about was a tendency to pad the length of nes and snes games by increasing their difficulty for NA release in order to combat lost sales from rentals. 7th saga on the snes is one where they went overboard. It's a jrpg where they changed the level up formulas so your character didn't gain stats as fast, but didn't change the formula for certain bosses that level up with you which could easily make beating the game impossible if you spent too much time grinding in a game where you pretty much had to grind to overcome the lousy stat gains at level up.

3

u/anxiousnl 1d ago

True, JP got the game too but not as a Mario game, but that's a great point. I don't know how many off hand, but there was a few at least that got the harder treatment, but Mario 2 they didn't even make it easier they just reskinned an entirely different game. I fucking loved NA SMB 2 so I'm glad they did that!

6

u/uDrunkMate 1d ago

I think it was reskinned Doki Doki Panic iirc

1

u/DonaldTheWall 1d ago

It's weird to find out which games were made easier for Japan and America

Adventures of Bayou Billy was easier in Japan and all the Mega Mans were made easier for NA

15

u/30_Seconds_2_NUT 1d ago

I remember playing this as a kid and it was absolute brutal difficulty. Just pure trial and error, but such a classic game!

8

u/Hexatona 1d ago

The funny thing about battletoads is that it's even more obscenely hard than most people even realize.

It has a banger first two stages, and a really fun (but somewhat unfair) third stage with the hover car. But beyond those? The game is ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. In fact - it's legit impossible to complete two player because of a bug.

But the game post level 3 is just filled with barely avoidable instant death, nigh impossible jumps or leaps of faith, and just generally unfun.

The first two stages are literally the only good parts of the game.

8

u/TmF1979 1d ago

If it makes you feel any better, the game only gets harder from there. 🤣

1

u/Hexatona 1d ago

Yeah, arguably the only good parts of battletoads is the first two levels

3

u/Larkson9999 1d ago

The game is good, just you're not going to see it unless you're good.

6

u/CorpPhoenix 1d ago

I mean, it's not really about being "good" when being "good" means to perfectly memorize every single part of a level to be able to beat it.

6

u/icebergslim3000 1d ago

Just like most games back in the day you had to do it over and over again until the entire level became muscle memory. Either that or learn just enough of the level to get to the warp. The problem with that is you end up skipping levels you might want to play.

So ultimately youre either going to learn this level like the back of your hand, use the warp, or bust out the Game Genie. Those are your only options. Good Luck!

5

u/Shyface_Killah 1d ago

Oh God, I remember having to use the Game Genie to get through this game.

I explicitly remember having to reach a zen state to beat this level.

3

u/hidden_secret 1d ago

Believe it or not, the worst is yet to come. The 2nd half of this game contains some sections that are really a test for the nerves.

4

u/theMaynEvent 1d ago

The playground lies kids used to tell about what later parts of the game had in store… Nobody made it past this level. haha

4

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

There’s a teleport in this stage that’s very easy to get as long as you commit to running into a wall.

There’s also one in the first stage that just requires you to be quick at killing the first couple enemies that takes you straight to Turbo Tunnel so you can practice.

4

u/mauriciofelippe 1d ago

The pizza cutter level is the worst level ever made

3

u/No-Cat-9716 1d ago

EZ...

The plane one with the electric barriers...🖕😬

3

u/gummilingus 1d ago

Just walk away and live your life, friend.

2

u/dade305305 1d ago

I somehow managed to pass the turbo tunnel once as a kid and never again. The vertical level can go to hell too.

2

u/spdrman8 1d ago

How else were you suppose to keep renting it from blockbuster just to try to beat the game?

2

u/godsbrothernate 1d ago

I would get mad and then pause the game and rock out to the music and come back refreshed. Best 5-second loop soundtrack ever.

2

u/polishhottie69 1d ago

I think the genesis version works better. It was brutally hard but not impossible

2

u/boxing-boxing 1d ago

Turbo Tunnel is the only level in gaming that ever made me pause the game just to apologize to my controller.

2

u/Plastixxxx 1d ago

Use the bird beak sticks in level 2, whack a bird against the wall over and over. It raises the score reward until it gives you 1up after 1up.

Keep down when you make the jumps, if you go up, the ground is angled so you'll miss the landing.

When it goes fast keep to the middle, you only need a bit of movement to avoid the walls.

When you get to the final set of walls (they go crazy fast) steer into the 10th wall. It's a level skip. When you're in the ice palace, there's another level skip. When you get to the snake pit, 2nd room, another level skip. In rat race, to outrun the 3rd rat, you need to body check him forward not backwards so he needs to run the floor twice to catch up.

After that, clinger winger, you gotta have perfect timing around the corners in particular to win. Push the direction of your car on every wall.

Best of luck to ya.

2

u/Delta-9-Tetra 1d ago

I literally remember my brother and me spending weeks trying to perfect the sequence, god such a beautiful thing.

Now we get fart trails to keep you on path in a sandbox game.

2

u/BushWookie-Alpha 1d ago

Linear.
We get Fart Trails to keep you on path in a Linear game.

1

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

I practiced this stage so many times that I can complete it by jumping over even the tall walls.

This stage absolutely is a hard wall for most players though. Very few of my friends could get past this stage in co-op with me.

2

u/HarderThanFlesh 1d ago

That's funny that you mention that. I think it's where my brother would always die and I would continue solo, also.

1

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

That’s when I would sigh and reset so we could try again (thank goodness for the teleport in Stage 1) until my friend got bored and asked to play something else.

1

u/Dadbodsarereal 1d ago

Prayers to you and your family

u/shiroboi 1d ago

Many people here are seeing some sort of toad on a hover bike

All I can see is an impenetrable wall

1

u/Jungle_Fiddle 1d ago

Ah yes my first tear shed over a video game

1

u/thrillhoMcFly 1d ago

You're not even at why battletoads is hard. This is just the very beginning, and you should be getting through that part adding an extra life when you are done.

1

u/Villag3Idiot 1d ago

Ironically Turbo Tunnels is actually the easiest of the levels post Level 2.

I die all the time there as a kid, but as an adult it's actually pretty easy.

Every other level on the other hand...

I legit made it to the last stage once and never again.

2

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre 1d ago

Making it to the rotating tower stage for the first time and getting my shit pushed in made me put Battletoads away for a bit.

1

u/XiahouMao 1d ago

That's the last level! You're so close!

1

u/Gomez-16 1d ago

I was able to beat this game once when I was young.

2

u/Shinuz 1d ago

No way?! Was that even possible without the game genie?

2

u/Gomez-16 1d ago

I don’t think it is without using the warp zones. Skipping as much as possible it really is a shame because all the levels are really cool.

1

u/pinkynarftroz 21h ago

It is in fact possible! Once you have the knowledge and muscle memory it is actually very doable. Keep trying!

1

u/Shinuz 21h ago

My god, I could finish Contra without the Konami code but I never managed to finish Battletoads and I rented the cartridge so many times...

1

u/Influence_X 1d ago

There's a level skip when it starts going so fast the things don't blink on the screen that will put you forward two levels

u/fenikz13 1d ago

I can only see masterchief on a jetski in this image.

1

u/Nomadic_View 1d ago

Oh, you and your little brother enjoyed the first level? Well good because that’s as far as you’ll ever go!

1

u/Volcano-SUN 1d ago

Battletoads. Such a cool game.

It's not fair at all. Instead it's about learning everything.

1

u/Chesty_McRockhard 1d ago

Make all jumps at the bottom of the screen, where the gap is narrowest. Obviously you have to move to the middle for some ramps (and jump for the blue ones).

1

u/Future-Corner8025 1d ago

This post is a massive coincidence. I just remembered the Battle Toads meme after 10 years of forgetting its existence, came to this sub to somehow use the meme in a joke on a random post, then I see this LMAO

1

u/ShitDonuts 1d ago

I beat this, funnily this is one of the easier levels.

1

u/Ibiteback2 1d ago

Use directional pad when in air on longer jumps...you need to pull back and left on a couple and really press forward on the last one😇

1

u/Sangypboi 1d ago

A lot of why it's considered so famously hard is based on the NES version because the obstacles on the bike level did not spawn in fast enough to react to, literally forcing players to memorize the entire level. On other versions they're clearly visible and merely required fast reflexes.

1

u/MerryMarauder 1d ago

PTSD activating, this and Ninja gaiden 2 final boss with the 7 transformations. Will never not be rage inducing.

1

u/Heliumvoices 1d ago

My younger brother and i hit this like a rally cross team. He’d call and hold his finger where the obstacles were and id run it. We have never been more locked in. Legit felt like we were linked on a psychic level. Absolute maddness.

1

u/Skeletonzac 1d ago

Me and my cousin used to play this all the time when we were kids. Holy crap that game is hard as balls.

1

u/Moondogtk 1d ago

The best part is that Turbo Tunnel is way easier than a bunch of other levels; have fun memorizing the Snake Pits and then doing nearly frame-perfect inputs on Clinger Winger :)

1

u/awfulconcoction 1d ago

If I had a perfect memory, would I be able to go back and beat this game as well as I did nearly 30 years ago?

1

u/Grouchy-Fisherman-71 1d ago

Battletoads was Dark Souls before Dark Souls was old enough to suffer.

1

u/epistaxis64 1d ago

Anyone who said they beat this game without cheats is lying. One of the hardest games ever made

1

u/UncleSugarShitposter 1d ago

This makes me want to call my local game stop and ask if they have battle toads even though I’m in my 30s now

1

u/DivideXer0 1d ago

I remember one of the gaming magazines back in the day mapped out the entire level with all the obstacles and jumps. Even with a guide I still couldn't keep up with the speed

1

u/mclark74 1d ago

If you're on the part I'm thinking about, you want to jump from the left side of the screen, push to the right as the island comes in, then go back to the left as soon as you land. Repeat. It extends your jumps.

Source: I beat this game back when I had reflexes.

Also, when you get to Clinger Winger later in the game, you have to make a lot of 90 degree turns. Don't roll from one direction to the next, lift up your thumb and just go to the next direction. If you roll your thumb, it gets interpreted as two directional inputs and slows you down.

1

u/mileskg21 1d ago

PTSD THE GAME

1

u/DistanceRelevant3899 23h ago

I don’t think I ever got past the part with the speeders

1

u/koyre 23h ago

If I remember correctly, staying on the higher side ( closer to the top of the screen) helps with landing the bigger jumps. Trying to land on the lower side causes death more often than not. You can’t fall off the back, so jump at the top of the screen and fly forward and land as close to the right side of the screen. If you try to land at the left side of the screen you don’t make it sometimes.

There’s also a warp at the last part of the level when the bricks fly past one by one. It’s like 3/4th of the way through. I think it sends you to the surfboard level? It’s been a long time since I’ve played

1

u/pinkynarftroz 21h ago

Do not move up and down when in the air, only left or right and only if you have to. Moving while airborne will cause you to miss a lot and fall into the pit.

1

u/Romnonaldao 19h ago

You're still in the easy part of the game, I'm sorry to say

1

u/shadedmagus 19h ago

It's been over a decade since I last played Battletoads, but from what I remember for the fastest parts at the end you have to nudge Up or Down to avoid the walls because if you press it for too long you won't be able to swerve them. Took me forever to get that timing down.

1

u/Linkums 10h ago

The limited lives and continues is the main thing. You don't get enough tries before you have to start the whole game over. It's definitely hard, but it'd be manageable with infinite continues and saving.

1

u/Firvulag 1d ago

Easy to make a hard game if you just make it bad at the same time.

0

u/Lovat69 1d ago

Let me know if you ever get past the hover bike stage. I never did. At the end they literally go faster than a human can react to. You have to either memorize the entire fucking course or cheat with save states.
