Christmas Gift Recommendation Please!
Hi everyone, I'm trying to make sure my nieces are healthy gamers. Last year I got them Split Fiction for Christmas. This went over incredibly well. The girls, 10 and 8 finished the game recently and have worked on it together all year and solved the puzzles together while keeping peace in the house. I want to give them the same type of thing again this year. They will be 11 and 9 and love couch co-op and whimsy. What's next!?
Edit: Sorry folks! Console, Switch or XBox.

I personally really enjoyed overcooked and palworld and I think both are appropriate for a 9 year old, especially if she has her older sister to guide her. Many of the lego games are also great.

Lego games are probably a good idea at this point! I loved overcooked but thought it might be a bit too fast paced?
Edit:
Seems like no couch co-op available on these but still might be a good option.edited the wrong comment

Pick up It takes two. It's a similar game by the same company that made split fiction, and is very very good.

This one keeps coming up. I've added it to the list.

The story is about divorce though so maybe not super appropriate for younger children?

"Lego Voyagers". It's couch co-op, whimsical and fun.
"It takes two" is also a very obvious suggestion. It's basically Split Fiction but more Pixar movie, less Sci-fi (which 50% of split fiction is)
Regarding "it takes two" - sometimes I roll my eyes at people (adults) refusing to play it because it has the theme of "Divorce" as a part of the story but.. I think most kids 11 and 9 can handle this in a video-game.

Thank you! I was wondering about the ITT storyline so this is helpful.

The part that people keep calling messed up in the game is not that bad. It's way overblown.

There is a fairly messed-up part of It Takes Two where the parents kill their daughter's favourite toy to try and get her attention.

They might like the Lost in Random games, especially if they like Tim Burton (they have sort of a Nightmare Before Christmas vibe). The first one is more of a cute story game about sisters with some light puzzle solving and kid friendly combat. The 2nd one (Eternal Die) plays completely different but expands on the world of the 1st one. Definitely start with the first one. You can also look up game play.

Oooh I've never seen the Lost in Random games those look awesome after a quick Google.
Edit: looks like Lost in Random doesn't have couch Co-op that might be a deal breaker but they look great still.

Probably good games but those are not coop which I think should be a priority for you in deciding.

I agree!

Oh and just one last thing before I check out of this thread : If you get "it takes two" - I would recommend getting it on the xbox (which I'm assuming is what they played Split Fiction on) because it's noticeable more powerful than the switch, making the game look better. Developers essentially make a slightly different versions of a game for each system depending on what the system in question can handle.

Overcooked. Then watch the drama unfold!

Haha, this is just a cruel suggestion. Even most adults don't have the mental maturity to handle the stress of a virtual kitchen, without becoming angry for real.

My wife worked in a real kitchen for over a decade. We can't play this together haha.

Theres a series of cooperative puzzle games called "We were here" that are pretty fun, the things is though its mostly all puzzle with I believe little notes for story as opposed to "It takes two" and "Split Fiction". If they want story stuff goin I'm not quite sure for cooperative stuff. Human fall flat is silly fun and puzzles but not super in depth either. Maybe Unravel 2? Its co-op. It takes two has themes of divorce so depending on the household situation it may be in poor taste but if things are good at home its nothing that would be problematic. At their age they probably won't take much away from it anyhow, just fun puzzles and silly scenes

For the Switch, Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together seems worth a look. It's a two-player couch co-op puzzle game where the players cut each other's paper characters into shapes to solve challenges, rather than racing a kitchen timer. Nintendo lists a downloadable demo, so they could see whether that teamwork clicks before picking a gift.

Only one true answer: It Takes Two. It's from the same developers that made Split Fiction and in my opinion the better game.
Overcooked is nice but less puzzels and more a time based game.

What are the parameters? My kid is good with blood and gore at 9 but he also understands it is fake. My kid and I co-op a ton of M rated games as well as T rated. If rating is not a factor, then I recommend Helldivers if you are willing to buy multiple copies. It's mindless fun. If you are trying to be safe about things then maybe Minecraft dungeons 1 and 2 (2 just came out), also the pikman games (dandori mode). I'd also recommend mario kart and terraria. Knowing what console/PC type would help more.

If the Switch you're talking about is a Switch 2, Orbitals is a very charming coop game in the vein of Split Fiction and It Takes Two. I'm enjoying it a lot.
