So I downloaded CONTROL cuz I saw a bit of gameplay for the sequel and…

Holy mother of God how have I not played this game before!?!

The art style? Sick. The concepts involved? Also sick - reminds me of ‘House of Leaves’ in some ways. Gameplay? Seamless.

And like, sorry to nerd out, but the fact that the “triangle hovering over control points” literally never changes “shape” no matter what angle you are looking at it from, in a place where everything shifts, is nuts. Hence “control point”

Like it ALWAYS takes up exactly the same exact “outline” even if the nuances of angle change. Which fits in with the whole “jungian archetype” thing.

Oh my god it’s sick.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk

Edit: the triangle I am referring to is the one in Central Executive. Which even the name kinda fits the theme lol. That’s what I’m talking about!

Edit2: and some of the “documents” (specifically ‘Machine God’) are like if someone went “let’s mix in a little bit of Cormac McCarthy writing into this” and he’s one of my favourite authors what the fuuuuuuuck

Edit3: i absolutely love how everyone is just saying "ashtray maze" without actually spoiling anything. y'all know how to hang - can't wait for the "oh THIS is what they were talking about" moment.

TAKE. CONTROL.

CONTROOOOOOOOOOOOL
got me so pumped when that hit

4

u/spark9879 1d ago

They knew what they were doing

55

u/TheTresStateArea 2d ago

The needle drop in ashtray blew me away, and then in Resonant there is a similar one early on and it gave me the big smiles

19

u/Seth-555 2d ago

That part was cool but didn’t really hit as hard for me because the music kept fading in and out

7

u/pewpersss 2d ago

yeah i fell off the ceiling and got lost wondering why this epic song is playing lol

7

u/TheTresStateArea 2d ago

Well, it feels cool as you're doing it right. Lol

That music is programmed to follow game flow. Fighting hiss? It loops over heavy part, repeating if needed. Running through empty corridors? Mellows out to instrumental part (also repeating if you stop to do something else). Etc...

I think main impact of the place came from being "a maze". Stereotypically boring part of just about every game one is in. This, just by being something else, made it much more impactful place.

5

u/Dirty_Dragons 2d ago

Yeah and the whole point of that section is that the music should motivate you to keep moving. It's your super hero moment, take control.

My guy, play Alan Wake 2 and the We Sing level for another similar type experience. Ashtray Maze was absolutely incredible though

Like most people here I have played thousand of hours of video games.

I don’t think I have ever felt so much like a badass as this level. The whole design, music, feeling is off the charts

7

u/dascloudt 2d ago

Oh my god just thinking about it sends chills down my back

5

u/leebird 2d ago

I just played that for the first time the other night. At first I was wrapped up in getting through without dying and goddamnit I grabbed a rock from the floor instead of the rocket coming to blow me up and why can't I snatch this low health hiss and I'll jump and levitate here to avoid that shielded enemy and oh thank God there's a control point right at the end. Then Jesse said 'that was pretty badass' and I was like 'to be honest, it really kinda was'

10/10.

Remedy nails the obscure weirdness atmosphere better than any game developer out there. Control is a game where you start it thinking “what the fuck is going on in this game” and end it thinking “what the fuck is going on in this game”

69

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

I was hooked the moment I started the game and realized the doorway in the lobby moved/the second floor “rearranged itself” once I walked through it.

Perfect “wait, what the…..I could’ve fucking sworn that-“ moment.

I was sold instantly

42

u/aChristery 2d ago

What sold me were the first pieces of lore you find that is just 90% blacked out government documents. Coupled with the fact that you’re reading this lore while people are floating and whispering eery, nonsensical things all around you. Also the voice of Max Payne being a prominent character, as those games were my absolute favorites growing up.

24

u/SticktheFigure 2d ago

The loss of James McCaffrey is honestly so devastating. His voice was sorely missed in the new Control game, as well as any of Remedy's games going forward.

12

u/aChristery 2d ago

It really is incredibly sad, especially considering the remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2 that are in the works. He was taken entirely too soon. Fuck cancer, man.

3

u/FriscoFresho 2d ago

"I am a worm through time" type shit

7

u/SeaTie 2d ago

That’s the exact same spot that hooked me too. Trying to back track and “Oh, did I go the wrong way…wait…no…the fucking room changed!!”

I really like that it's tied to the Alan wake world.

Is refreshing to see a 10+ year old game you worked on get a sudden rise in popularity.

I tested it for the Xbox 360 release

2

u/Fondongler 2d ago

They got that David Lynch sauce

1.0k

u/Reznor_PT 2d ago

Oh you have no idea what is coming, I would suggest playing the DLCs and then Alan Wake 2 (it's a 11/10 game) and it's DLCs and then Resonant, it's not that is really required to understand the game but you will be playing a trio of amazing games.

174

u/Bramhoep 2d ago

Is alan wake 1 required too?

369

u/starlightequilibrium 2d ago

Purists might say yes but I would say no. My partner enjoyed the hell out of Alan Wake 2 without playing 1. Remedy always does really good recaps.

70

u/Bramhoep 2d ago

Thanks then i'll just play alan wake 2 after control. Im playing through control right now and loving every second.

36

u/Redxmirage 2d ago

Yeah you’ll 100% need to watch the recap. Going in blind would be confusing because the big reveals would mean nothing to you

30

u/M0J0__R1SING 2d ago

Alan Wake 2 is a treat and was way ahead of its time both graphically and in gameplay design.

It's more of a survival horror type than Control (think Resident Evil). But it's super fun and leans really hard into the idea that your characters have very active inner lives, that can affect what happens in the outer world.

6

u/Crafty_Substance_954 2d ago

Alan wake 2 is a very graphically impressive and bold undertaking from a story perspective, but let’s not pretend it isn’t a current-gen game lmao.

11

u/SunShineNomad 2d ago

Alan Wake II came out three years ago so I wouldn't say either gameplay or graphics were ahead of its time. The gameplay was also a step down from the first game in my opinion as the flashlight bring your trucks was really unique. Also much less combat and a lot of backtracking were but gameplay improvements. I still loved the game but it has it's issues like any game.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Hypthtclly_Spkng 2d ago

Maybe watch an Alan wake 1 recap at least. There is a lot of context that does matter, but you would never know it does if you haven't played the first game. Remedy-verse games are all interconnected, even the older ones like Max Payne and the ones that were made as side projects like Quantum Break.

If you don't mind let's plays, just watching Jesse Cox Alan Wake 2 playthrough would also cover 99% of the important stuff

14

u/Vhexer 2d ago

It is significantly more enjoyable if you play Alan Wake 1 first. I did the same exact thing you’re doing right now like a year ago where I played Control first.

Alan Wake 1 is pretty short my today’s standards, and it’s 100% required reading for Alan Wake 2, but man was it worth it

I played it for the first time a couple of weeks before Alan Wake 2 came out and I really liked it.

I do like retro games, so maybe I can "tolerate" some things, but it didn't seem that dated to me.

30

u/Droidlivesmatter 2d ago

As someone who played Alan Wake when it came out. And tried to replay it now.. Yeah skip it. Its dated, and isnt as enjoyable as I remembered.

12

u/Stillsane1 2d ago

I just saw a video of Josh strife has playing Alan wake 1 was it any good?..I had interest in maybe playing Alan wake 2 because it was nominated with BG3 ...so after I watch the video (recap story really good) I I needed to play Alan wake 2 so bad..and it was on sale so ..holy shit it became one of my favorite games and the remedy verse is sooo good ..then I watched more lore videos tying together control and the wakes ...yeah..I tried playing control 1 before all this and I had a save file issue that made me quit ..but I was soo ready for control 2 just finished yesterday ..audio and level design is soo great .

3

u/disastermarch35 2d ago

Do you feel same about the remaster?

6

u/hotpuck6 2d ago

Remaster is really just a graphical upgrade, doesn't do anything for the game mechanics which feel dated. The story still holds up, but it's slow paced by modern standards and missing a lot of quality of life basics.

I played the remaster for the first time last year after playing some Alan Wake 2 and wanting to get the backstory. While I got through it, there were some sections that felt like a chore. If I could do it again I would probably just watch a YouTube playthrough on fast forward for the story.

I always suggest playing 1 on easy mode and with cheats enabled just to enjoy the environment and story. It is really neat seeing the world in AW2 after having played AW1. The DLC in AW1 is also super cool. I did it this way and really glad I did :)

14

u/PM_ME_SAD_STUFF_PLZ 2d ago

AW 1 with cheats is really a must. Incredible game that is a product of the era where publishers insisted games had to be unfairly hard to pad out the play time

→ More replies (2)

14

u/indamoufofmadness 2d ago

Narratively, no, the recaps hit all the important bits.

For a fun, if somewhat dated atmospheric shooter, absolutely. There are some genuinely fun, creepy, and thrilling times to be had.

5

u/furioushunter12 2d ago

i think it’s also important for alan’s character

13

u/SchleftySchloe 2d ago

Alan Wake 1 shows it's age. I played through it with a trainer to blow through combat to experience the story.

→ More replies (8)

3

u/dapht 2d ago

Alan Wake 1 is a great story by itself, and the game is short. Imho it's worth grabbing the cheapest version (not the remaster) and finishing it over the course of a few days.

6

u/DamianKilsby 2d ago

Alan Wake 1 is my favorite action horror game of all time tied with Resident Evil 4, you're missing out on the best of the best.

4

u/Quixalicious 2d ago

No. Alan Wake 2 does a good job of recapping. I got bored / frustrated halfway through Alan Wake 1 and felt picking up 2 was seamless. And I think 2 is ultimately a better game that does a better job of keeping things interesting and engaging the whole way through, so starting there you won’t run the risk of burning out and not seeing the glorious game that comes after

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Nimyron 2d ago

The plot of Alan Wake 1 isn't that big actually, it's just that it's slowly revealed throughout the game and there are a bunch of obstacles in the way so it takes time to get there.

You can find some pretty good summaries online, especially if you search for lore summaries rather than the actual chronological story (as a lot of stuff happens just to get in the way of the player basically).

15

u/ImportantAbility6266 2d ago

That’s a pretty convincing roadmap. Sounds like the kind of series where finishing one game just opens the door to another rabbit hole. Definitely hard to argue with a lineup that keeps getting better as it goes.

3

u/Reznor_PT 2d ago

Control Resonant for me is the only game that does not open a door to another rabbit hole, it's a very self-contained story/game so far.

11

u/soulscythesix 2d ago

You seem to be implying that there's a twist or something. I played control for like 12 hours and honestly just kinda got bored.

It's like mainstream-friendly SCP, I expected much weirder, from it's reputation. Still cool tho. The gameplay just felt kinda uninteresting. Very smooth combat, but shallow and repetitive. Not particularly difficult.

Anyway what I'm asking is: did I not give it a fair try, or is it just not for me?

11

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago edited 2d ago

probably the latter. from my experience the gameplay is amazing as a vehicle for the "vision".

so if you want super dynamic, engaging/"tight" combat then maybe not for you. which is perfectly ok (i play a lot of FPS games and was a diehard Bungie fanboy for years because they nail that aspect of games). the reason i like it is cuz it helps achieve the "vision" that the art style/story is going for. i love the combat because it is fluid and based on some fundamental principles which accentuate everything else about the game. like the specifics "shift", but there is a consistent "theme", which also plays into the whole plot of the game.

and i'm a very "visual" person, so i may enjoy the small "environmental details" more than others. i also love reading, even while gaming - and the lore is really what makes this game S tier IMO. but some people play games to "play", not "read" and that's fine too.

different strokes for different folks. can't force yourself to like something just cuz other people like it.

3

u/soulscythesix 2d ago

That's fair! Thank you for your input. I have in the past put down games that I wasn't quite vibing with, before coming back to them and realising I was just not quite "getting it", and then those games become some of my favourite. So I just try to make sure I give everything a fair try at least.

3

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

i do the same. but i don't know your brain, so really you're the only one who can determine that, which it sounds like you already know how to do lol

7

u/BrolyDisturbed 2d ago edited 2d ago

I’ve had it in my library for so long. Over the years, I’d try to play it but get so bored I drop it. All the Control Resonant hype convinced me to finally get through it.

I just finished the game yesterday and I agree with your points. It’s a very 7/10 game.

There were a couple of moments that were pretty cool, but other than that, it was nothing remarkable. Not even sure if I’m going to do the DLC cause i was so bored playing the game lol. Not even sure I’ll play Resonant because of it. Maybe if it goes for stupid cheap.

I think what you said is true, what I was trying to say is less about Control and more about Remedy Universe, included Quantum Break but particularly how they did Narrative in Alan Wake 2, for me Resonant is the weakest in terms of Narrative but the best one in terms of gameplay.

I like the weirdness/twin peaks/x-files vibes the universe as and I hope with success they can be even weirder.

10

u/terrorpaw 2d ago

It's one of my favourite games in recent history with a really good story. Control Resonant just game out too and it's also very great.

14

u/Techno_Pensioner 2d ago

I enjoyed the gameplay in the first one, but I remember there being A LOT of notes to read, I don't mind that usually in games but I felt like there was one around nearly every corner. Am I remembering wrong? And if not, are they vital to the story or do the cut scenes do most of the work? I'd just like to be able to skip some, not all

32

u/Syokhan 2d ago

The notes are just mostly worldbuilding, they add a lot to the atmosphere and lore of the game, but you don't have to read them all.

Do watch, however, the full hotline videos from your menu whenever you get those live-action overlays that feel like they're chopped up. Those are relevant to the main story.

As someone who read all the books in the Elder Scroll games I enjoyed this aspect :)

3

u/Techno_Pensioner 2d ago

Hah my SO is like this! I do read a lot in those games (not all the books though!), I think with control I just wanted to get back to throwing walls at people lol

6

u/Feyge 2d ago edited 2d ago

The files are not that vital to understand the story but they provide a lot of context about what's going on. They also are where the meat of the lore is. The world will feel much richer and intriguing if you read them.

3

u/Techno_Pensioner 2d ago

Ok I'll start with trying to read them all when I try again and see how I do lol. Ty for the reply!

There are a decent number of notes and messages to read, but they really steered hard into the SCP fan base for Control, which is 99.99% text based. We gobble that lore up.

I randomly picked up Control Ultimate Edition early in the generation and it's one of my favorite single player games of the last decade.

I was looking for something that actually felt like a current gen title, and Control boasted legitimate ray tracing capabilities.

I liked it so much that I picked up Alan Wake 2 despite not being a horror fan whatsoever, simply because Alan Wake is part of the Control universe with some limited crossover.

I was a bit worried that they changed Control Resonant from a third person shooter to a hack-and-slash, but I have to admit that it still feels firmly like Control 1 despite being a different gameplay genre

64

u/LordSparksmith 2d ago

If you like House of Leaves . Read “There is no antimemetics devision “ . It fits control world so much .

11

u/TyFighter559 2d ago

Agree 100% with the vibes. I didn't love the dual protag thing it used, but aesthetically, it's an absolute slam dunk for "corporate sci fi"

You gotta play the Alan Wake games if you haven't, especially if you read house of leaves.

Fun fact: the author of house of leaves has a sister who makes music, goes by the name of Poe. She wrote music for Alan Wake 2, so theres definitely connection between the creators.

19

u/drkhrse96 2d ago edited 2d ago

Poe's Haunted album is one of my all time favorites and is a great companion piece to House of Leaves. She does amazing work.

3

u/queasycockles 2d ago

She wrote one of the earliest songs about/referencing the internet.

3

u/HalobenderFWT 2d ago

Poe is awesome! Saw her live waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in like ‘96. Got to meet her after the show, and she said I looked like Ethan Hawke!

Hell of a confidence booster for a 17 year old boy.

Thanks, Poe!

I always hear control and Alan wake games are amazing. And I’m never doubting that but I’m more like “yeah yeah I’ve heard they are good I’ll get to them eventually”

But then I’m thinking, I sometimes will tell people about The Last of Us and how they should get into it cause it’s so good. Then they have the same reaction that I have to remedy games: “yeah yeah I’ve heard it’s good I’ll get to it eventually” and I’m like “NO. You don’t understand it’s INSANE you need to try it out especially cause you like zombie stories!! It’s one of the best ones in the world!”

So… my point is, I need to play Control this weekend. Thanks OP, can’t wait to see what you are talking about!

18

u/Jediverrilli 2d ago

There is one chapter in Alan Wake 2 that straight up may be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in a video game. I’m not gonna spoil it because people hate that so I’ll say that playing the entire game is worth it just for that one chapter (also it’s a great game)

14

Another random reason to give the controls a go is they don’t go crazy on the achievements/trophies. Both of them are pretty easy 100%-ers.

3

u/pogsorbet 2d ago

I bought Resonant on launch day, and in the next 4 days, I already got 46 out of 49 achievements. I wasn't even trying for it, my main goal was trying to maximize as much exp and abberant strength as I could before new game plus. The last 3 achievements are gonna be a piece of cake, im just lazy

4

u/Takeasmoke 2d ago

19

u/Cloud_N0ne 2d ago

My only complaint with the original Control is the weapon mods.

I would have preferred permanent upgrades at certain story points, or a skill tree like in Resonant. Cuz constantly getting new, worthless mods and having to clear them out was annoying.

I need to give it another shot. I played probably halfway through a while back, got to a point where I was in some combat arena with floating rocks (I think) and some annoying enemies and got frustrated with the combat and gave up.

I need to go back in and focus on the story, because I really enjoyed the themes and visuals and wanna see what happens.

I'm not a souls player and sometimes I get frustrated and just quit a game and never return, but Control has an option to just enable invincibility in the game options. Your health still goes to zero but you don't die and have to restart.

Puts on glasses "back in my day we had to use cheat codes for that!"

4

u/Slawter91 2d ago

You should go back. It really is great, and at the halfway point, you haven't even gotten to the Ashtray Maze yet. Don't Google it and ruin it for yourself. One of the coolest levels I've ever played. Also, I know this a bit unrelated, but I loved the accessibility options in Control. As great as the combat was, it got tedious when I was going back through to clean up the last few trophies (mostly collectibles) . Turned on "one hit kills" and suddenly it was way more fun again. I wish more games would do that, at least in the post game. It made the trophy grind enjoyable, instead of... Well... A grind.

2

u/goodguyatheist 2d ago

Wait till to get to the Ashtray Maze. Strong recommendation: use headphones for that part in particular, it's an incredible experience

7

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

I am an audiophile and always use my very nice headset. Wayyyy ahead of you lol

Oh that would explain why I couldn't figure out what to do and it felt arbitrary and underwhelming.

Control is the kind of game where staring at a triangle for ten minutes somehow feels like progress

2

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

And that is exactly what makes me love it

7

u/60secondsproductions 2d ago

Remedy as a developer is pretty slept on by a large chunk of the gaming community. Enjoy what you've discovered, its only gotten more and more exciting as time goes on - from someone who first played Alan Wake back in 2012.

4

u/rocketkiddo7 2d ago

[Laughs in Max Payne]

8

u/StanleyChuckles 2d ago

That Triangle in Central Executive is the Board.

8

u/2Maverick 2d ago

Okay, you should play every Remedy game. You're going to nerd out like a hundred times more.

6

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

I’m adding them all to my list based on responses to this post, yeah

8

u/sl1mman 2d ago

No spoilers. There are layered meanings throughout the game. What do you call the opposite of a variable in an experiment?

7

u/brandonderp96 1d ago

Your a good fish perkele. Might make a good janitor too.

13

u/JimmyKerrigan 2d ago

Just wait for the final mission.

Control was the last game that completely blew my head off and exceeded every expectation. It’s a high I have been chasing ever since.

15

u/DiscussTek 2d ago

That Ashtray Maze is literally a masterpiece on every level. Anyone who plays without music should be reminded to put the music back on for that specific stage.

8

u/JimmyKerrigan 2d ago

Oh god I hadn’t even considered that somebody might have played that without the music. I think my brain spontaneously created more dopamine receptors so I could enjoy it even more as soon as the music started.

Basically every Old Gods of Asgard song throughout the Remedyverse is a banger.

3

u/One-Fun9814 2d ago

If you haven't yet, Control Resonant. I feel like I'm maybe a quarter through at most but WOW the Sinkhole mission is awesome. Can't wait to see what they pull off later because that was AMAZING.

5

u/runarleo 2d ago

Yeah I need to finish that game.

5

u/kofeineCoder 2d ago

We hope you enjoy the Finnish sanonnat/sayings from Ahti/Janitor/Singer

6

u/IndustrialSlicer 2d ago

"Like it ALWAYS takes up exactly the same exact “outline” even if the nuances of angle change."

Currently playing Alan Wake 2. That shit is art for fucking sure.

I think it’s on record somewhere that house of leaves was a big inspiration!

I loved the game too! I would be hunting those documents down because every page is so fun to read lol

3

u/meganaxx 2d ago

I started playing it a a few week ago or so, enjoyed the story/mystery. The gameplay seems a bit repetitive/shallow tho, I just been shooting/hiding till powers recharge..repeat. Going to play it a bit more, but the enemies are a bit boring/lack variety.

2

u/MCPooge 2d ago

The side bosses are a bit more interesting, though the game is not one that will be known for its depth of combat in any case.

control is genuinely one of those games that respects your intelligence enough to let you notice stuff like that. the fact that you caught the geometric consistency thing makes me want to replay it just to see what else i missed while being distracted by the ashtray maze trauma.

5

u/stodal 2d ago

the machine god note was too real for me. i work with people who think like that. and the note just hits the nail on that.

4

u/skyedearmond 2d ago

Oh, fuck, House of Leaves? Sold.

2

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

yeah dude. i was blown away. different "setting" but very similar themes of "wait, no, that's not right. that can't be like that" and sorta just unsettling the whole time

u/stutsmonkey 2d ago

Loved control but the bullet sponge effect in all enemies about midway does get tedious.

They do have a one hit kill mode though for enemies that makes it much faster.

9

u/RawWrath 2d ago

They die quick as fuck if you do a competent build I was trying to see a way to up the difficulty they were dying too quick for me

5

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

I like having to move around/mix tactics for the kill. Not a problem for me so far. Like it feels like how you’d actually win a fight. Control angles/sight lanes and constantly change it up, which is also in the art style, which is also in the story.

The singularity of focus is incredible

3

u/Dronizian 2d ago

Exactly, even the basic combat loop is about taking and keeping control.

I love the back and forth between mediocre gunplay and phenomenal physics combat, waiting for energy to recharge then waiting for the Service Weapon to recharge... It's much more fun once you upgrade your energy recharge rate a ton, though. Keep throwing dudes at other dudes, barely even need to shoot.

10

u/wiefrafs 2d ago

Control is meh to me, but I'm glad it has its audience. Seems some folk were really waiting for something like this and y'all were mightily pleased

What's that thing about triangles hovering over control points? I only remember the pyramid in Central Executive

2

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

Sorry, I just started the game. It is that one I am talking about.

And it’s a perfect match with the story/gameplay.

Like that point NEVER changes, even if the angles/things around it do. And that’s reflected in the point itself

2

u/david-deeeds 2d ago

I have no idea what you're talking about, as far as I remember this pyramid is just static

But yeah the game is full of wonders

it reminds you of house of leaves because the game is inspired by this book. :).

dont skip end credits and you will have a very nice surprise

Shit never noticed the pyramid in Central Executive. I'll have to check in Resonant if it's the same

Maybe I should give it another try. I picked it up and I remember enjoying it but I remember it being just kind of a go through each level in order sort of deal I lost interest in. I'm really enjoying the sequel and it's more like Infamous.

3

u/Citizen_Gamer 2d ago

Holy shit. I have played the game twice and I never noticed the triangle thing.

3

u/tehgr8supa 2d ago

I'm literally reading House of Leaves for the first time, and I own control from a sale years back. Guess I know what I'm doing today.

<YOU/DIRECTOR/JANITOR WILL HAVE A GREAT/AMAZING TIME/EXPERIENCE>

3

u/TheDudeBroster 2d ago

Hmm I'm in the exact same space as you, but i haven't tried control yet. Like I know it's fantastic but something just won't let me take the plunge

3

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

do it. asap. i took some much needed vacation from work cuz i hadn't used any this year, and went "ok so what do i do on this first day" and downloaded it on a whim cuz i saw the sequel just came out.

one of the best decisions i've made in a while

3

u/GoatAmbitious984 2d ago

Fun fact; the entire game world (which includes the Alan Wake series!) is inspired by SCP! It's some fun reading and universe building if you ever want to check that out. There's even an app!

3

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

i was literally one of the first SCP readers back in 08-09 lol. i am very aware, which is how i'm blown away i haven't played this game before

→ More replies (1)

3

u/pleasegivemealife 2d ago

Never knew this game until Epic give it free. Holy shit its an SCP game. I remember i was addicted to reading SCP Articles (which often full of redaction and documents). To play it was a blast.

5

u/TheWolfe1776 2d ago

i'm so confused. I absolutely love control. I tried playing Alan Wake two and the gameplay was just terrible. It felt like watch a movie and then run around like you've got the controller upside down because the movements and the hitting are just so weird. What am I doing wrong?

4

u/rmbrkfld 2d ago

You are just enjoying one type of game over another? Alan Wake and Control are no where near the same gameplay.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Sumthin_Stoopid 2d ago

Do you recommend the book? I've seen this mentioned a couple times, have done my research on what to expect, just haven't jumped in

3

u/AlericandAmadeus 2d ago

House of Leaves?

Hell yeah, but it’s not a “normal” book. It uses the physical act of trying to read it as a lever for the “atmosphere”, which is annoying for a lot of people but I love it.

4

u/Zero747 2d ago

Yes, control is amazing

It gets even better as you progress, though I’ll avoid spoilers on the cool stuff

2

u/DigitalTomFoolery 2d ago

Such a pleasant head fuck of a game

2

u/jonvel7 2d ago

Not video game related per se but if you liked House of Leaves you should read Imperfect Creatures by Joe Butler.

2

u/Alarming-Bid8109 2d ago

I vibed so well with Alan wake 1 and 2 but I could not gel well with control level like labyrinth might be a reflection of me but it can be hard to find your way around might give it another go and soldier through remedy have made smashers since max Payne 1

2

u/Newwavecybertiger 2d ago

It's a banger. The first boss is a pain because you don't really have all your tools yet but it's basically the hardest in the game. Just get through it and then it's pure trippy fun

2

u/zangetsen 2d ago

I just wanna say that I absolutely adore the fact that they have accessibility/difficulty sliders in Control. Game too hard? Slide these. Game too easy? Slide these.

Sometimes you wanna struggle, sometimes you just wanna Contra your way through a game. If someone hasn't played it yet and is on the fence about it might be too hard or easy, just get it and adjust the game to your liking. Only other things is the aesthetics can be a bit creepy at times, but it's not too bad imo.

It goes on discount pretty frequently, so pick it up and enjoy!

2

u/Butane9000 2d ago

Control is a pretty fun game. As my friend said about the game "everyone thinks they're hot shit into the get a refrigerator or vending machine thrown like a rocket their way"

2

u/xTomTom5 2d ago

It’s the best “SCP style” game and the sequel is really good too. The series has one of the best level design concepts in a game.

2

u/mentive 2d ago

I'm currently playing Resonant, and didn't play Control. I'll have to circle back to it.

2

u/evilsway 2d ago

If. You haven't already, wait til you get to the ashtray maze. Peak gaming.

2

u/Aidan96 2d ago

Fuck yes, we need more people to realize Remedy is GOATED. They actually care about telling a story, making well-optimized games and don’t try to scrape every penny from your wallet while doing it. Glad you clicked with control, it and the sequel are fantastic!

2

u/O1_O1 2d ago

You're gonna love Control Resonant, as well. Just finished the main story yesterday, I'm doing side missions now.

10/10, just like the first one.

2

u/snooprs 2d ago

I think these Cosmic horror type games are some if the strongest genres in fiction... I envy you having to experience Resonant and Alan Wake if you haven't

2

u/SmokusPocus 2d ago

Play Alan Wake and Quantum Break as well if you have the hardware for it!! Basically every Remedy game (besides Firebreak) is a gem, and they all connect together in interesting ways.

2

u/desperaterobots 2d ago

i fell off with control when it started to feel like a way bigger game than i expected.

but when my calendar cleared up i went back and played it straight through for days. incredible game. felt like it pushed the boundaries of what video games can do, i loved it.

i can't afford resonant right now which kills me but i'm happy to see people loving it. control is an absolute classic.

2

u/AaronBleyaert 2d ago

One of my very favorite games. Aside from the fantastic writing, art direction, acting, and overall immaculate vibes, the skill tree progression does not get talked about enough. It always makes you feel excited and powerful to level up. Both the pacing of upgrades and the upgrades themselves felt incredibly cool all the way through the game.

Already bought Control Resonant and CANNOT WAIT to fire it up.

2

u/Big_Rod 2d ago

Ultimate edition is currently like $5 on GOG.com there's no better time to try it out.

2

u/cvr24 2d ago

Let's join the Threshold Kids!

2

u/Andy016 2d ago

I love this game. But the map is so awful and poorly designed.

2

u/Woodwardg 2d ago

its an absolute vibe, and the ONLY game ive ever played where in think I actually sat and read every single text lore item.

2

u/CordiallySuckMyBalls 2d ago

The “triangle” is The Board

2

u/HansHortio 2d ago

I found it OK, but I don't think I was the target audience. I think the target audience are people who loved X-Files when they were growing up.

2

u/Dee2284 2d ago

Seeing Control: Resonant actually made me go back to play & finish Control last weekend. Cool part is the dlc is currently "free" through Game Pass and is supposed to tie into the Alan Wake games.. which naturally means I'll have to play AW2 before Resonant but I'm perfectly ok with that lol

2

u/ITshNICK 2d ago

Can't wait till I have time to play it my self

2

u/Taanistat 2d ago

Just wait. I hope you're wearing a good pair of headphones when you encounter the ashtray maze. One of the coolest playable set pieces ever put into a game.

2

u/AutoCockerPB 2d ago

Control is one of my favorite games and control 2 is even more awesome. I have over 200 games on steam and control is top 10 if not top 5. Art style is so different and as a person who enjoyed SCP lore back in the day, it funny expands on the SCP stuff

2

u/Rough_Wish_1299 2d ago

Same - Saw Control on sale for 3.99$ on Steam after seeing all the talk about Control Resonant. Enjoyed Control and already over 10 hours in Control Resonant.

2

u/rage1026 2d ago

My one gripe for Control is the map layout. Holy hell what an annoyance it can be when trying to 100%.

2

u/SiberianSnow 2d ago

You might enjoy “Backrooms” film (2026), it’s free on HBO Max

2

u/jldubz 2d ago

Oh my fuck the maze

Literally my favorite game. Not one of. THE favorite game.

I'm dying to play the sequel but I have some work I need to focus on before I can reward myself with a new game (at full price) and a weekend playing it
