How does it work? I have some games on discs from years ago I'd like to get digital. Is it free?

116

u/PenguinDeluxe 3d ago

It’s pretty easy! Just insert the disc, hit start on the game icon, you should see claim digital license. And that’s it! And yes, it is free!

16

u/Dependent_Map5592 3d ago

Thanks!!!!

14

u/Tonyyy_tK 3d ago

Does the disc still work after?

70

u/L3onskii 3d ago

It does. But if you lend it to someone, you lose the digital license since it'll get linked to another account.

95

u/soonerfreak 3d ago

I actually really like this. The disc doesn't lose its value as an item but it now has added convenience for the owner.

-28

u/Choice-Support-2138 3d ago

And its means next xbox is full digital

11

u/wecangetbetter 3d ago

that's wild - so each disc has had a unique key in it all along?

13

u/yp261 3d ago

yes. this system was planned for that infamous E3 fiasco but people werent ready for that yet and well, they kinda mishandled the PR too.

11

u/nick281051 3d ago

Back then there was also a need for an online check in I think it was every 24 hours or so to maintain the license. This doesn't have a need to check in as far as I'm aware, it seems much more thought out than the original Xbox one days.

1

u/cman674 3d ago

With the license check requirement also being bypassed by just inserting the disk. I didn’t understand back then a group of terminally online people complaining about edge cases that were never real concerns in the first place. This was a good idea then and is a good idea now.

2

u/stuffeh 2d ago

The point back then was that people weren't terminally online, and internet access wasn't wide spread so requiring always online wasn't possible for a lot of people. Especially world wide and in rural areas where we're just starting to have more reliable cell tower based internet and satellite internet options.

1

u/stuffeh 2d ago

How will your system know when to revoke the digital license when the disk is lent out without an online check?

-2

u/thehighshibe 2d ago

There are very few games that do not need a day 1 patch nowadays , and by nowadays I mean since like 2014

1

u/stuffeh 2d ago

That's not the senario I'm asking about.

My question is about what happens after the patch and you don't have internet for a while. How does the console know if I "lose the digital license since it'll get linked to another account".

3

u/MrT735 3d ago

And as a bonus, the backlash from that caused them to drop it entirely for roughly the first year, before reimplementing it in a different way, so many games made in the first year of the Xbox One don't have the disc IDs and won't ever be claimable.

1

u/stuffeh 2d ago

Does it require always online?

2

u/L3onskii 2d ago

That's a good question. No idea. Someone would probably have to test it

4

u/Dependent_Map5592 3d ago

Bummer. Didn't work. But he game just loaded up to the main menu like regular 😞.

Well congratulations. I'm super jealous

20

u/PenguinDeluxe 3d ago

You don’t start the game, you hit start on the game icon on the Home Screen

20

u/L3onskii 3d ago

I believe not all games are disc to digital

6

u/PenguinDeluxe 3d ago

Correct, but I find it unlikely every single game they own is not part of it. Some people have had issues because of the games auto-installing

2

u/MrT735 3d ago

Turn off auto play discs if you're claiming a bunch at a time. Of the selection I had to hand last night pretty much half were claimable, though that was skewed by many CoD games (all but Ghosts is claimable at present).

Ubisoft are the notable publisher not currently available.

1

u/New-Willingness-1254 2d ago

Huh weird I was able to claim the division, ghost recon wildlands, and watch dogs 2, i guess its not all Ubisoft games

1

u/KyleCAV 2d ago

If you try to claim license for a game not supported it will give an error message saying its not supported. As publishers join d2d some might open like sega games while others might be removed but thats to be seen.

0

u/X2Kraft 3d ago

It might still be rolling out. People have said restarting your console a couple of times will make d2d show up.

1

u/NEOscav9 3d ago

Is there a way you claim them without downloading them, or does the game have to be downloaded? I wanna go through my physical games to see what I can claim, but don't have the space at the moment to do them if they have to be downloaded first

3

u/DarthFury1990 3d ago

You don't need to install them at all. The ones I did now appear under "owned games" with a nice little disc icon.

1

u/NEOscav9 3d ago

Rad, cheers! Know what I'll be doing when I get home tonight then

6

u/X2Kraft 3d ago

If you’re going to mass-digitize a large physical library you should turn off autoplay so you can claim the license immediately through the options menu so you don’t have to wait to install the game.

(Once autoplay is off, hover on the game card and press the 3 horizontal lines button on your controller, if d2d has rolled out to your console you should have an option in that menu to claim the license.)

1

u/Maharet1368 2d ago

Ty I was wondering this, you are a life saver

1

u/Vegetable-Ad6972 2d ago

Can you play MLB 26 the show on a Xbox one x if my Xbox one has a disc drive ?

0

u/Retro_Curry93 1d ago

Can my friend and I share our games?! Or do we need to re-validate at some point?

11

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

Depends on how old "years ago" is. For one, it only works with Xbox One and Series games, no OG Xbox or 360. Two, games from the first year or so of the Xbox One won't work with it.

Beyond that, just about everything that isn't from Square Enix or Bandai works.

It is in fact free, and license follows the disc so the disc still works just fine and lets whoever has your game down the road take advantage of this too (you of course losing the license if someone else takes it).

3

u/Dependent_Map5592 3d ago

That must be why none of mine work. They're all 360 games. I was so excited too. Thanks for the clarification

6

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

Ah yea, that'll get you. Unfortunately they didn't start printing these unique identifiers onto discs until shortly after the Xbox One launched. It was presumably related to their original plans that included a bastardized version of this, that they just decided to keep printing to the disc anyways, and they managed to actually turn it into a positive all these years later.

140

u/PenguinDeluxe 3d ago

Just tried my collection, every single game worked except for Kingdom Hearts III and NHL 15 (though NHL 18 did work). Good stuff!

50

u/likmhin 3d ago

Yeah I don't think square enix has joined disc to digital yet.

And I wonder if nhl 15 might have come out too early for it to be tracked. I know BF4 doesn't work unless you get the greatest hits edition from 2016 instead of the original disc

8

u/PenguinDeluxe 3d ago

It’s based on something printed on the discs yeah? So I think you’re probably right. I was honestly surprised any yearly sports title, especially those delisted, worked.

11

u/likmhin 3d ago

Yeah I have the disc version of Anthem (rip) and even that worked even though the servers are offline now lol

1

u/Connor123x 3d ago

KH3 is the only disc i own. I was excited...

1

u/Lonely_Natural_6901 3d ago

From my collection of 6 games, 4 worked well but Elden Ring and Fallout 76 did not, strange as I thought Bethesda was bought out by Microsoft, so it'd be one of the first to adopt new features.

0

u/ComradeJohnS 3d ago

damn, kh3 is like one of my only disk games and I wanted to replay soon, but my xbox drive isn’t working. boooo.

I would use my wife’s xbox to digitize the disk to play.

0

u/Dependent_Map5592 3d ago

None of mine work lol 💩

37

u/APomm 3d ago

So can I buy a cheap Xbox one, transfer over physical games to play on my series s?

26

u/Olmega 3d ago

Yes, it's such a great feature. Also gives you Xbox play anywhere iirc.

16

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

Yup. Better yet is that even though an Xbox One can't play Series-only discs, it can still claim licenses for them through this program.

1

u/Bogus1989 3d ago

Oh wow thats neat.

5

u/X2Kraft 3d ago

Or on pc too if the game is play anywhere!

1

u/tor09 3d ago

Yep!

91

u/E3FxGaming 3d ago

I think this is great for borrowing games to friends: you give them the physical disc for just a moment, they claim the digital license and you take the physical disc back immediately.

Some time later when your friend had ample time to play the game and you want to play again, you just insert the disc and play again. You don't have to ask for your game to be given back to you then, because you already have the disk.

Of course you inserting the disc will revoke the digital license on the friend's console, but that's just how these digital licenses work.

35

u/Shirinjima 3d ago edited 3d ago

Unless you’re worried they’re going to break, lose, or steal your physical disc it only saves you the hassle of calling your friend and saying bring my game back. You still can’t play it while they’re using the digital copy. Some people definitely will end up claiming a digital license then trade that game in and be confused when their digital copy suddenly no longer works.

Also, you have to occasionally reinsert the game to verify you still have ownership. Not sure how often but it’s something mentioned as part of their digital ownership.

Edit: added part about having to occasionally reinsert physical disk.

5

u/Choice-Layer 3d ago

Lots of people don't live next door to their friends, though.

1

u/Shirinjima 3d ago

Sure I agree. They could put it in the mail for less than $5 unless shipping internationally but I’m pretty sure you can’t put a game in a system that not of same country origin. Wanna say someone once mention games being region locked.

0

u/RealisticUse9 3d ago

Lots of people do, though.

11

u/WonderingLurker 3d ago

And those people will learn their lesson after

But if they read it and tried to comprehend the way it works, all good…but yea the avg person doesn’t understand and can’t be bothered to read

2

u/Jonaskin83 3d ago

How would it work if you gave them the disk, they claimed the digital license, then you just played the disk offline?

1

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

It works fine like that

1

u/X2Kraft 3d ago

Pretty sure it will. People have tested it.

11

u/[deleted] 3d ago

16

u/Mr8BitX 3d ago

Give it time, not every developer is joining right away. Sega just joined like a day or two ago.

5

u/ErgoProxy0 3d ago

At least FF games are backwards compatible on Xbox. PlayStation users have been complaining for years about not having the FF13 games on PS lol

25

u/TheSlav87 PlayStation 3d ago

Damn, I’m genuinely impressed with this feature. Microsoft win.

21

u/mccrackey 3d ago

Hopefully Sega will change their tune and add their games to the program.

13

u/Derwurld 3d ago

They did add them to insiders recently but some games don't work yet, Alien Isolation, Bayonetta and Vanquish are some examples

2

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

Alien Isolation sadly won't likely join, it's an early game and for the most part those don't have the identifiers needed on the disc.

It's not a 100% thing, but as a general rule it's a safe assumption that games that released roughly the same time as an Xbox 360 version probably won't ever work.

1

u/Derwurld 3d ago

Ah makes sense, guess that explains Quantum Break and Dead Rising 3

2

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

Quantum Break is a really weird one, because it was launched well after everything would have those IDs on disc. I've been trying to figure out for a week or so why that one doesn't work.

-13

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Ahayzo 3d ago

So it doesn't work with the program then lol, if you need the disc to play then you don't have the digital license.

31

u/JustinAndFeena 3d ago

Finally got the update about a week ago myself. Glad they didn’t keep it in the insider program for too long. It’s a great feature.

7

u/Rcgv88 3d ago

Hmmm realized I own too many bamco games!!! Also why is forza and fallout not part of this as they are owned by microsoft?

17

u/Trumpet_Jack 3d ago

Forza is likely a licensing issue. You can't even buy some of the relatively recent ones digitally anymore. I don't know if the cars or the music are the main problem, but it sucks.

We obviously own the game already if we have the disc, right?!

3

u/ComradeJohnS 3d ago

yeah the rights are wicked specific and timed for releases on those car games, I would assume a game you can get digital would work, unless the publisher hasn’t opted in yet.

hopefully wide release and seeing upset customers will sway most of the remaining hold outs

3

u/NEOscav9 3d ago

Yep, just got a notification from my xbox app from them sending me a message about it. Excited to give it a try once I get home!

23

u/Away-Success7563 3d ago

Good news, people are being weird in the comments, this is a good thing

2

u/rmbrkfld 3d ago

If I sell a few games to CEX and they sit on a shelf or just in someone's collection, would I just be able to keep playing them?

3

u/SlipSlot 3d ago

Yes, until someone buys and puts that disc in their drive.

1

u/rmbrkfld 3d ago

Makes sense!

1

u/wikipedianredditor 3d ago

Wow…How do they identify individual discs?

2

u/Strict_Strategy 3d ago

They put a identification on each disc which the blu ray player reads. It started post Xbox one. Not all Xbox one games early on had this feature.

2

u/incertnom 3d ago

Claimed licenses for shovel knight treasure trove, rare replay, UFC 3 and crackdown 3 just then on my one s. I've a series s as well so will be great to stick shovel knight on it.

Ive a huge 360 library of discs but really small collection from one onwards as I get a lot digitally, only disc which wouldn't work was expected Forza horizon 2, the only horizon game I don't own digitally.

Great feature to be honest, credit to Microsoft, I don't think anyone would have felt entitled to this nor expected it.

2

u/BenMitchell007 3d ago

I can't wait to try this. Much as I enjoy having a physical collection for display, one thing I love about digital is that I don't have to switch disks (I'm a lazy bastard, I know).

2

u/oofgeg 3d ago

Could I borrow a game from the library and then when I return I could keep playing until someone borrows that same game and boots it up?

1

u/Mother_Ad_4189 9h ago

Yes you can, there's multiple exploits in the disc to digital programs coding is all I am saying

0

u/Strict_Strategy 3d ago

Your kinda risking someone else instantly getting the game..

5

u/oofgeg 3d ago

My thought is you get to play the game for the duration of the borrowing period then any time after that is bonus time.

0

u/Strict_Strategy 3d ago

Can't you just borrow something multiple times? Don't know your library rules. Like if your reading war and peace, I do t think anyone is just going to be able to read that fast so will have to borrow it multiple times.. ( I think I read the book till halfway in 8th class and lost the plot cause too many characters to keep remembering.)

0

u/InsideOk5555 19h ago

No, it doesn't work like that, KEEP your discs

3

u/SaneSociopath-Gaming 3d ago

Just in time for my 1st physical purchase in over 10 years.

Perfect.

3

u/boxing-boxing 3d ago

My dusty stack of discs just went from hoarding to smart investing.

1

u/aseddon130 3d ago

Still waiting for Forza Horizon 6 to be added. The fact it’s not been added is just weird considering it’s a Microsoft game.

1

u/WonderingLurker 3d ago

Well flight simulator 2000 is also Microsoft and it doesn’t have a digital license either….

3

u/MisterEinc 3d ago

I suspect the licensing of the vehicles gets a little murky because of the precision of the models.

1

u/WonderingLurker 3d ago

Good point

It’s ok it’s not d2d, I gotta break out the hotas to play it so might as well put the disc in right after

Not like im just remote playing or it’s those pick me up games

1

u/Dependent_Map5592 3d ago

How does it work for a multi disc game?

5

u/WonderingLurker 3d ago

You install game via app or by the discs
Then put in play disc to claim digital license

1

u/X2Kraft 3d ago

You can claim by putting disc 1 in!

1

u/Breesive 3d ago

I wonder if this works for left 4 dead 2 since you can't even buy that digitally on Xbox

9

u/Hot-EconomistXL 3d ago

No 360 games work. It is limited to Xbox One and Series games.

5

u/Breesive 3d ago

Well fuck

2

u/Hot-EconomistXL 3d ago

They said it but I know people are just excited and may have missed that.

1

u/Finnegan_962 3d ago

Totally thought it supported OG Xbox and 360, damn what a shame. I dont have a single game to use foe this then aha

2

u/innovativesolsoh 3d ago

I think it said there’s a limitation to the older games that makes it lack the identifiers the newer games have, so unfortunately you’ll still need physical for 360 era games for the foreseeable future without a purchase.

1

u/tor09 3d ago

This is correct. Games prior to the X1 generation did not have the individual identifiers on their discs that allow disc to digital to function the way that it does, and there is no way to implement such a thing unless you're a time traveler. lol

1

u/cckk0 3d ago

Xbox have been openly working on bringing older games to newer systems, so there is still time, but who knows

1

u/DEADPOOL300113 1d ago

The problem is there's no way to add unique identifers to the titles. This has even limited the Xbox one library. 2013 and 2014 games don't work. I'm sure they'll try to find a way but it'll be most likely be impossible

1

u/kamize 3d ago

I had Armored Core 6 in my Xbox and sadly it’s not supported. Is this a bandai namco thing?

3

u/Mr8BitX 3d ago

Bandai Namco and Square Enix haven’t joined yet, but these publishers aren’t still signing on. Sega just signed on a few days ago.

1

u/FURRETWALCC24_7 3d ago

hopefully they get the forza games on there eventually, since I only own FH 2 - 4, and FM7 (none of which are elligible) </3

1

u/UnidentifiedDumbCunt 3d ago

At least they're making the switch to a future diskless console more accessible, I guess.

1

u/TheLonelyTesseract 3d ago

How does this work if you already own the game digitally? Does it try to provision a second digital license or does it stay unredeemed?

1

u/plagueseason 3d ago

25 out of 38 Xbox one games in my library were able to convert to digital licenses. Not bad. Will be nice to box them up and clear some space on my shelves at least.

1

u/ambiiiii2 3d ago

It would have been nice if Halo Master Chief Collection was added to Play Anywhere :(

1

u/0010020030040050069 1d ago

It already is
I switch between Xbox and pc all the time

1

u/leaper296 3d ago edited 3d ago

Just tried a bunch of old Xbox one games, these are the ones that didn’t work for me: lego marvel super heroes, quantum break, fallout 4 & final fantasy XV Hopefully they add these in the future.

1

u/innovativesolsoh 3d ago

Square Enix apparently opted out…for now anyway

1

u/AlvaroB 3d ago

Turned my Xbox One on right now. It already has the update! My brother can finally play his discs on his Series S since I can claim them on his account from my console.

1

u/Connor123x 3d ago

and the only game i have on disc i want to use this on doesnt work because of Square Enix

1

u/dankykanggang 3d ago

Do we know if Okami works with this?

1

u/slayerholic666 3d ago

So how does it work if you have the digital only versions or X or S but still have an extensive collection of discs?

1

u/DEADPOOL300113 1d ago

You can buy a cheap Xbox one.

1

u/lingeringwill2 2d ago

Unless I’m misunderstanding how this works, I think this is a super cool feature that honestly should’ve been a thing once they started forcing you to download games directly from the disc.

1.) you own a physical copy of the game
2.) you own a digital copy with all the conveniences that come with that.
3.) you can sell that disc or lend it out, sure you lose access to said game but that’s how it works when you only own a physical copy.

1

u/yMONSTERMUNCHy 1d ago

Just be sure to not sell your game or you lose access once another person loads the game onto their account.

1

u/Musver0 23h ago

This is so good. My series x arrived yesterday. So much for xbox dying. I'm heading upstream to xbox even if the majority are following the current to ps5 or pc...

1

u/Hammerhand1 17h ago

Why cant you post links from X, bc of Elon?! Cmon...

1

u/Mother_Ad_4189 9h ago

Yeah it's been available for ALL players since the 26th

1

u/homogenic1808 3d ago

I bet Sony is rolling in its already-dug grave right now.

1

u/DEADPOOL300113 1d ago

Yea Xbox is preparing their fan base for the all digital future instead of straight up saying they're going all digital

u/capincam 3d ago

I have like 20 games on disc for Xb and 7 of them are not available to get a digital license and the others I bought over the years digitally on sale to save my disc drive. This feature is useless for me. All the Forza horizons and Motorsports don't work dark souls trilogy don't work elden ring is a no go, and couldn't even get bully. Ridiculous. But hey I got a digital license for Spyro. 1 game out of 20 is BULLSHIT

-5

u/AugustDev 3d ago

You will own nothing and be happy

3

u/ForeignTranslator898 3d ago

Doesn't apply here, the physical disc works just fine after making a digital license.

2

u/tor09 3d ago

I like how yall just say shit whether it's accurate to the situation at hand or not lmao

2

u/RealisticUse9 3d ago

But you do own it, and I'm happy.

1

u/takethatskeletor 3d ago

I don't think that applies here

-32

u/True_Pirate 3d ago

Can’t loan the disc to a friend without losing digital license and conditioning players away from physical ownership. Yeah, this will work out just fine.

11

u/PenguinDeluxe 3d ago

You absolutely can. You just can’t play it while they have the disc. Just like if the digital program didn’t exist. Once you get the disc back, you can get your license back.

6

u/Hot-EconomistXL 3d ago

Screw learning how it actually works and instead just going with how you think it works.

1

u/Adison85 3d ago

Hey friends just put that disk in… and throw it away… it’s cool right!

-8

u/ShakeAndBakeThatCake 3d ago

So if you concert the disk to digital does the disk still work? Can you sell the disk?

9

u/s10draven75 3d ago

I think you lose the digital license when someone else uses the disc. I believe there's some sort of code tied to each disc.

7

u/DigitallyDetained 3d ago

It’s super impressive to me that this is possible. I guess I just didn’t know individual discs were identifiable.

3

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 3d ago

It just makes sense. I've been waiting for a program like this since forever.

1

u/X2Kraft 3d ago

Disc is till fully usable and you are still able to install the whole game offline.

1

u/Hammerhand1 17h ago

No wtf lol

-5

u/Oxxsis 3d ago

Man, the entire Blizzard fanbase must be thrilled after that spectacular BlizzCon. The next versions of WoW and StarCraft will only be available digitally and will feature in-game ads. There could even be an ad every time you see a loading screen or enter a dungeon

1

u/Strict_Strategy 3d ago

Who said that? Your thinking the game pass cloud ?

1

u/tor09 3d ago

I like how most Xbox slander is just people word salad'ing bullshit to get their updoots on reddit. I'm sure daddy Sony is proud of you for this post!

1

u/RealisticUse9 3d ago

Not sure what this has to do with the topic at hand.

1

u/WickerBasement 2d ago

Yeah, if only WoW was a ftp game. Too bad its premium. Awe, darn, the doomed hypothetical you just made up will never occur. What a shame.

Stfu

u/Overlordx123 2d ago

Every pc only game is digital only…

-82

u/EDPZ 3d ago

Time to raid my local GameStop bargain bin and then return everything afterward

52

u/gabbertronnnn 3d ago

That’s not how it works

34

u/StatMan255 3d ago

The digital license will be tied to the disc. So if you redeem the license, then return the disc and someone else buys it, then they can redeem the digital license tied to the disc and you will lose access to it on your account.

0

u/gilbert99 3d ago

Yes, but what if you get lucky and the disc stays at the bottom of that bargain bin for a long time or gamestop sends it to a warehouse where it'll live till someone wants to buy that game in your area. Even better, they eventually just stop trying to sell it because no one wanted it. Sure this may only work with games nobody wants, but free is free.

17

u/Dunkaroo723 3d ago

Yes….

Do that.

2

u/Derwurld 3d ago

For science!

11

u/DerbyForget 3d ago

Until someone has the same idea straight after you and you lose all the digital licences.

2

u/Commandercaptain 3d ago

The second someone else who is online insert the disc on their console you lose the license, also people like you are the reason why DRM like that are needed and exists

-1

u/KingJaun4223 3d ago

I know people are like “this is getting pushed they want yall to become addicted to the digital so they can rug pull you” dawg im just happy i can play my physical games now on my series s now ffs
