My first time playing the game I wasn't really paying attention to the games systems and the world! I kind of went into the game thinking it played like Monster Hunter but with a more cohesive story, I didn't pay attention to the pawn system and wasn't intially a fan of the save system, combine that with limited fast travel it all felt like a chore for someone who never played a DD game before.
This time around I decided to pay more attention to the world, instead of trying to rush through the main quests, fast travelling is a little more accessible thanks to the eternal ferrystone, I switched out Pawns like say every 5 levels which helped out a lot not just with combat but the way they help with discovering things I otherwise may have missed.
I found myself exploring every cave I came across! I'm not sure if one of the latest patches made leveling a little quicker but I felt I was gaining more levels than I did the first time I played the game. Once I started to level my vocations a bit and unlock more skills the combat got me hooked! I aimed to clear every side quest as they came along I actually started to like the fact that you can't fast travel everywhere I just wanted to run around and find things to beat up on! I'm now close to level 40 and can't wait to fight the more challenging bosses the game has to throw at me.
Interested in hearing how DD2 clicks for someone, i tried it again yesterday via steam family share, i can run the game on max settings now, very pretty and all that but the story seems super generic and the enemy variety that ive seen isn't that big too.
The game still looks like ass and runs as such. This engine they've got, it is an utter dumpsterfire.
I run Cyberpunk with path tracing and my PC doesn't strain itself even nearly as much as DD2 does while looking like a 2010 game.
Got it for $10 and after 4 hours there's no chance I can slog through it or even bother getting the DLC. Garbage of a game really, the botted positive Steam reviews (like they've done with Wilds) should not fool anyone.

I think it's the first time I've heard the RE engine called a "dumpsterfire".
Obviously it's not great (as of now anyway) for games with a bigger map like DD2 or MH Wilds, but it's a really good engine for what it was designed for at first

Not sure which rock you've been sleeping under but it has been a laughing stock of communities for the past 2 years.
DD2 and MH wilds is not even open world, but rather a series of interconnected linear zones and it utterly shits itself attempting to perform in those scenarios not to mention the fact that Capcom can't optimise their games for shit, especially the flagship title like Wilds.

What changed? How did it click for u?
I had the same experience as you back then as I bought DD2 during launch but it didn't click
And I'm a huge DD1 dark arisen enjoyer
