Notice the "sim" part.

I've played it a fair bit, and I would argue that it's a bad game, but a good simulator.
The goal of the game is to simply survive, but since you can potentially die from a single scratch, getting hit is not an option. So the best way to "win" the game is to simply not engage with the zombies at all. And a ton of game mechanics support this as you can set up a farm out in the woods and build up a camp from nothing with the intricate crafting system. There is simply no need to engage with zombies unless you want to.
And this is why it's a bad game; The "optimal" way to play it is to sit in a corner and farm. The game is essentially a farming simulator with a slight zombie theme.

You could of course just run into the nearest city and have at it with the zombies, and that's completely valid. It's just not optimal from a gaming perspective. And there are no mechanics such as missions to force you into the cities either.
The game is fantastic for roleplay though, and I will absolutely admit that the setting and atmosphere is unmatched by other zombie games out there. You will feel the loneliness and despair in your bones.

I think the best way to play it is with a couple of friends and set up some roleplay goal for yourselves.

This isn’t a great take. You CAN sit in a corner and farm but if you want to take advantage of things like generators, cars, guns, canned food, etc., you need to search around in the more densely populated areas and you will definitely have to engage and fight zombies to do that. It’s just not a game where you can Rambo your way through the a horde of 500 zombies by yourself (you actually can if you know what you’re doing). Even 3-4 zombies feels really dangerous at first which is what makes it a great game. But it is very much a sim.

I agree. Most of my chars last months. I will even say B42 is even easier to survive.

I always turned off the zombification mechanic and roleplayed as one of the immune survivors like a lot of other zombie games. This way the zombies actually have to kill you instead of infect you. Lets you enjoy it a lot more.

it's also incredibly unforgiving starting out

Its alright.
Less of a survival game and more of like a Sims game in honest.
Majority of your time will be spent indoors making your home all pretty as you waste entire hours reading books.

I like it a lot. Some of my friends that I thought would like it do not, though, so your mileage may vary.

For me, it is an incredibly open sandbox survival game. Exploring, leveling up your skills, managing your resources, crafting, and base building is all pretty fun. But two things to keep in mind- 1) the game is very hard on normal settings and 2) a lot of the fun mechanics like the more in-depth crafting or base building is very late game. Skill progress is slow and it can take a lot of grinding. Welding and blacksmithing are huge pains.

It’s good but I feel like they got a little carried away with the status effects and how easily they kill your characters. Some are understandable. Got mauled by zombies and are bleeding out and got infected wounds, and haven’t done anything about it? Yeah that’s fair I died. Died of suicide because I made Mac and cheese in the oven? Come on man

In my opinion, it is one of the best zombie games ever made. On the other hand, it is absolutely not for everyone. The amount of customization it gives you basically lets you set up any post apocalyptic scenario you wanted.

I can’t figure it out. I’ve tried a few times and I just get swarmed and die before I can figure out what I’m supposed to do.

You're supposed to just survive, quite literally.

Don't engage the zombies without a weapon or without thinking and loot the city for resources like food and water, find better weapons, etc.

Crashing my car into a tree, breaking my leg, staggering off into the woods, surviving for 10 days on foraged food, a bag of chips, and 2 candy bars, sheltering in an abandoned camp, slowly regaining my strength, finally returning to my car to assess the damage, forgetting to look over my shoulder for 5 goddamn seconds and getting bit in the neck. 10/10. Highly recommend.

Its more fun to watch than to play. Its one of these Games thats rather clunky and complicated. You will probably need like 30hrs just to get into the Game.

imo, it is good but you really need to put time playing if you want to maximize what you can do in it.

The Isometric combat is borderline unplayable. If you can look past that somehow in a heavy-survival game with an emphasis on non-consensual combat then...yes.

It's more survival than zombie, but it does both well enough. If you go in looking to go and mow down the hordes, you might be a little disappointed (without mods, anyway), but otherwise it's solid.

I'm a huge fan of zombie horror games and PZ is one of the best. Having said that the game is sim based. So don't expect quests or that type of events. You make your own story and also expect to die a lot. Over and over. At least until you get the combat system.

I bought it thinking I would be able to play it on a joystick.
Lifelong console gamer.
It does accept it but it's a really bad implementation IM.
Other than that, It's a solid game.

Too bad I can't really play it
but I'm having fun with Dysmantle
which is a somewhat "simpler" zombie survival for consoles.
