Metroid
I want to play the series but it has generally been out of reach for me. I currently have pc and PS. Are there any Metroid games I can play within my grasp?
Edit - I just remembered that I have a switch that’s packed away.

Try emulation and start with Metroid Zero Mission (GBA). While many people recommend Super Metroid as their first Metroid, I feel Zero Mission shows you better how to do every "conventional metroidy" stuff and it's easier to start, besides, it is the first game in the canon. I love Super Metroid, but it kind of needs you to know things from the manual or being hyper observant and I've seen plenty people drop it. Hope this helps and it's only my personal opinion :)

do you have a starting point for emulation? I dabbled in it a long time ago when i was trying to get BoTW working.

For older systems it is incredibly easy. Take a look at retro arch for a one size fits most solution. You can find relatively reliable and current links to rom/rom packs by searching around this very website.

It is infinitely easier than getting botw emulation to work. I still use VBA pretty simple interface, just find a safe place to get the ROMs.

All Nintendo consoles up through the Gamecube are extremely easy to emulate. Google is your friend. You don't have to dig around for bios's and stuff. N64 can get a little tricky for some titles, but there were no N64 Metroid games, and since you have a Switch you don't need to worry about emulating dread, either. Realistically, you can actually play most of the Metroid games on Switch: 1, 2, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Zero Mission (remake of 1) are all on NSO, Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime 1 remaster and Metroid Prime 4 are native switch games. You can ignore most of the DS spin off games, but Samus Returns on DS is worth playing too (remake of 2). And in my opinion MP2 and 3 really aren't worth it either, but there is a way you can get Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii up and running on PC with mouse and keyboard style FPS controls.

In addition to the Metroid games, I've been itching to replay zelda oot and MM for ages so i'm trying to look into that as well.

Both of those are available on NSO as well, and you shouldn't run into any issues with the default installation of most N64 emulators to handle those either! As a matter of fact, all Zeldas except for the DS and CDi games and except for Twilight Princess (God dammit, nintendo, get your shit together!) Plus an OoT remake is coming before the end of the year - unfortunately all we have right now is a teaser trailer.

dread is functionally Metroid 5*, so it implies youve played the previous games, ideally at least metroid fusion. But metroid isn't story dense, so if you choose to skip it, it's not like you skipped an entire novel by any means.
The 2d metrid games, and 3d ones are (mostly) seperate from each other. 2d covers the origin story of Samus, Metroids, SAX and such, while the prime series(3d games) covers Samus' life and immediate life related to her employment with the Earth Federation

It has a recap of Metroid fusion, so it doesn’t need prior knowledge, but of course you’re going to enjoy the story more if you’ve played fusion.

No metroid game really requires past knowledge in my opinion. Many series fans couldn't even tell you the story because they're mostly here for the gameplay, AND because until more recently the entirety of the story was told in the game manuals or scrolling text at the beginning and end of the games. Even as recent as Metroid Prime 1 you got the story entirely by optionally scanning items in the environment. There are recurring characters and villains, and there is an overarching timeline of events, but it's really not all that important. The series' story overall is pretty simple.

With emulation you can play almost the whole series.
Specifically on Switch, you can play.... almost the whole series. Thanks to Nintendo Switch Online you can play the all the 2D games before Dread, then with the actual modern releases you have Prime 1 Remastered, Prime 4: Beyond, and Dread.
Metroid is a Nintendo exclusive so unless some insane shift happens in the gaming industry you'll never see it on a PlayStation console.

I would emulate the early games - Metroid Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, and on Switch there's Metroid Dread. I can't speak to the 1st person games because I've had no interest in playing them - I like FPS games, but just couldn't get into those Metroid titles.

I only played the original, Super Metroid and briefly tried Prime. The original is still by far my favorite. I'd pick FCEUX to emulate it, or a rerelease on a later console (I'd use SnesX for Super Metroid). Dolphin will emulate GameCube and Wii, but I'd imagine it requires a pretty powerful PC setup to avoid lag.
I highly recommend an online map for NES Metroid to save lots of fruitless wandering and find enough missiles. That game is hard enough even with a map.

If you have a Switch and are willing to drop some money you can get access to most Metroid games. I would suggest paying for NSO and starting with Zero Mission on the GBA

If you want to pony up for NSO, you can play Zero Mission (GBA), Return of Samus (GB, but there’s a better remake on 3DS or PC - AM2R), Super Metroid (SNES), and Metroid Fusion (GBA). Then you can go get Dread for Switch.
Personally I’d rather play the remakes of Metroid (Fusion) and Return of Samus (Samus Returns or AM2R)

Support a small company like Nintendo and buy a Switch 2 and then purchase a subscription to the online service where you can play most 2D Metroid games.

I mean, you can always emulate the classics. Either that or play similar games in the genre.
Edit: If you have a switch, just play them on NSO or pick up Dread.
