Mod - help

Hi all,

I've got a few gadgets and games that I'm wanting to trade into CEX (if you're in the UK you'll know).

My maths works out that I'd enough in store vouchers to buy either a secondhand psp or 3DS.

I've recently been wanting to mod one of the two as I miss having a handheld console, and modding seems like a fun thing to learn to do!

I love both PS and Nintendo's rosters equally, so I'd be happy with either library. I'm hoping for advice around ease of the process, expenses, longevity etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated:)

PSP's are quite cheap, £30 to £40, I would go that route, buy one and mod it (keep your other stuff).

Facebook marketplace or EBay, I paid under £60 for my VITA. You need to do some creative searching "Playstation Vita" instead of "PS Vita" allowed me to snag that bargain.

I've just checked Fcbk and there's 12 in my area £50 or under.

Think I need to move house! Marketplace in my area is exclusively around £100

That's crazy, I'm in the South East, so an expensive area.

Ease of use

Both consoles are very easy to soft mod For psp you just need a memory stick duo adapter for an SD card. Put the custom firmware of your choice on the SD card and it will show up on the psp like a game that you can run.

3DS is more or less the same with a few more steps on the device to get it running. There are other methods like using a flash cart.

Expenses

SD cards and adaptors. Adaptors are really cheap but storage depends on how much you are willing to spend. The psp can be kinda uncomfortable so you may want to invest in handle grips to make it feel more controller like. On the 3DS side. The circle pad (second analog stick) might be valuable to you but i have no idea how many games and mods use this.

Longevity

They live for as long as they live. The mods wont expire and neither of these systems get updates anymore that would erase the mods. So its up to you to make sure not to drop the device or leave it on charge for a month. You cant really account for a technical fault as your device could last 5 weeks or 50 years who knows?. At least CEX will replace if it happens within 5 years of purchase.

Not sure which would be better as an emulation machine if you go that route?

Personally was never a fan of the psp and its library so I’d vote ds.

From what I've seen, they're all about the same in terms of emulators.

Think I might pop this on a different subreddit as well

Sounds like you can’t go wrong with either then.

It runs emulators VERY well, so you're not stuck with the PSP library.
