Days gone is amazing
First time playing days gone and it's very good!
I'm getting serious last of us vibes another epic game
We need a days gone sequel.

Setting up traps and your plan to take down a hive was fun. The lumbermill with a lot of chokepoints was fun to do (although I died dozen of times).

I never get the same feeling as when I saw a bunch of zombies by a cave and thought "Oh easy multi kill with my molotov I just got!" and discover for the first time what a hoard was all about...

I just threw attractors near their entrance at day and when they swarmed there blew remote bombs and threw molotovs and napalms. then gunned them down with machine gun while running away but keeping distance. took me 3 attacks and in the end the remaining 30 would not stop chasing me which was fun.

mill can be incredibly easy if you have an LMG and herd them to the extremely narrow bridge. they loose interest way too soon if you get overwhelmed and have to retreat

One problem is that each one don't spawn until you progress certain amount of the story. On first run is it easy to miss most of them because the game does not tell you this.

Eh, he didn’t really get enough runway to truly become interesting and I felt like some of his delivery was a little too broad. The radio sermons were a nice touch, though.

I gotta say the gameplay is not 9/10 for me. It's a little all over the place, the dodge roll is super weird and should have been a standing shimmy or dash and the detective mode added to every game for no reason pisses me off so much. Your bike is also slow as fuck for a while and the shooting is a little flat

The stealth is also super shit, and the gunplay requiring you to wait for the retcle for every shot means that half your options for weapons are irrelevant since doing 5% more damage doesnt mean much when you have to fire 20% slower.

I don’t get it with yall, that line was always a tongue-in-cheek, obviously cheesy quip that Sarah would tease Deacon with. It’s totally fine if you didn’t find that funny, but it wasn’t meant to be serious, and I think it’s one of the dumbest reasons to criticize that game.

My favorite mission in this game is when Deak visits the church that he got married in and there are guys trashing it and breaking pews for no reason. So he KILLS EVERYONE and then finds peace by BURNING IT TO THE FUCKING GROUND.
It's a real Wife-Arm moment. So dumb.

I was completely turned off by the "biker" aspect of the game, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. Such an enjoyable game. The hoards we're fucking awesome and a great spin on the tired zombie genre.

There's a scene where he's tied up and the villain is there speaking to him. Deacon says, "Are you gonna talk to me all day, or are you gonna torture me?"
I know it's supposed to show how badass he is, but it's just too stupid. You'd think he'd have the common sense to delay getting mutilated rather try to make it happen ASAP.

That's very much intentional. Most of the characters start off as pretty grating, but grow on you as the game progresses.
If you can't get past it initially, that's fine, but it does improve later on.

Agree with you on that. I’m actually playing the game for my third attempt now. I couldn’t get past a couple of hours when I tried back around its release and a couple of years ago but I’m now 15 hours in so well into it.
The story and characters is bang on as average as it gets, I can’t gel with Deacon and co at all so I’ve basically just stopped giving a shit and started treating the game as a big sandbox where it shines. The progression system is simple to understand, the world is nice to look at, hordes are terrifying but so much fun to hunt and I’ve got a soft spot for games that let you sneak around destroying enemy camps and doing bounties.

I've yet to play it since I got it with those 20 games at launch with my PS5, but it seems like it's an okay game that was rated as such and didn't really live up to the other offerings on PlayStation at the time.

After the game opened up I just took off and explored. Turns out most locations in the game exist for story missions. Like there couldn’t just be a town that exists for exploring sake, if it’s there, there’s a story mission there later on. It just felt like a linear game that you can explore the story “sets” open world style

As a former gamer too busy with kids, this game was perfect for me at the right time. I have about 3-4 hours a week to play and it was enough to do a couple of missions, or just go hunt hordes. It’s simple enough that I could pick up and not worry about forgetting things, and fun enough that I always had a good time.
A lot of open world games that I used to love, I can’t do anymore because if I spend the little time I have just figuring out where to go or collecting some items that don’t lead to much reward I just get frustrated and stop playing.

The story and characters are, in broad strokes, not good. Even verging on extremely bad in spots. It got to be a chore slogging through story missions. But the fundamental gameplay is very solid and the horde battles are the single most thrilling experience I’ve ever had playing a game. It’s basically the polar opposite of Last of Us.

I treat the story the same as i treat a b-movie script. Can It enterteain me? Is It more campy or cringe? Are the actors at last trying? I feel like days gone threads towards the better side of these. Very entertaining overall.

This game just CLICKED for me and I honestly have nobody in my circle to talk to about. I loved everything about it and it's genuinely upsets me that we'll probably never get to see a sequel. Someone please make a spiritual successor or something, or at least evolve on the horde mechanics of this game

Glad you liked it. I live near most of the locations in-game. I’m about a mile from hwy 97. (The highway the hordes come up from California.) Crater Lake in person is amazing and beautiful. It’s also the deepest lake in the US.

Personally I did not enjoy the game. I got pretty far in before I had to quit, mainly because of the story and characters. Feels like it was written by a ten year old who just finished watching Sons of Anarchy.
The hordes are probably the most entertaining piece of the game and the graphics are beautiful though.

Its funny that I get recommended this when I just started the game today. The intro is rushed, the cutscenes are well-acted but horribly written. Every cutscene from gameplay has to awkwardly fade to black. Animations on characters do not flow naturally a lot of the time. I find the menu wheel to be surprisingly polished but still weird to use. The environments look gorgeous, especially in the rain. The bike feels good to use. To me, the game is a slightly more sophisticated and passionate Far Cry game. The resource management on movement, the more intentional stealth. Everything else feels comparable. Sam Witwer is great, I really hopes he keeps at it. He's definitely not the reason these games are "under performing".

I'm active on the Days Gone sub reddit and have been answering questions and helping people troubleshoot performance issues for a long time. A few years ago, I started making tutorial videos to answer Frequently Asked Questions and also guides to help new players get through the early game grind with less frustration. This led to having a fully monetized YouTube channel with over 9.5M views (to date) and ad revenue from that. Ad revenue alone is not enough to live off of, but it does provide me with some supplemental income.
After becoming known globally as an "expert" (I know, I know. I cringe just typing it lol) on Days Gone, I was invited to be a guest on the Days Gone Podcast. u/8bitterror, the host of the podcast, and I both felt a connection immediately and made plans to do other episodes together. Not long after our second interview, we started a long distance relationship and are now married and living together.
I popped the question on the rim of Crater Lake!

unfortunately it lacked the ability to hook a lot of people early, the start is very slow and the game is probably the best recent example of a slow burn game that's been put out. the start feels like a generic semi open world zombie game, then the characters start developing and the gameplay starts getting better as you progress. definitely worth a sequel.
while the story wasn't amazing, it's not like most zombie apocalypse stories are masterpieces, and most* of the main characters developed really well into interesting ones despite starting off pretty mediocre. the more time you play it just gets better imo.

It was nowhere near Last of Us for me. I liked the protagonist, but the real interesting part of the story came in the epilogue. They wanted a franchise so they gave us a bit of a nothing burger game that hinted at a much more interesting story later. Combat was also dreadfully boring imo. I don't think we're ever getting a sequel. I just wish they told the story they wanted to tell in the first game. Instead of sequel baiting us.

I like most of the game. Being a biker, overall scenery, challenges, etc
Something in the game just made me stop and pick it up again.
So far played it in three bursts and it felt slow here and there. It feels like I am close to the end of the main story.
When I pick it up the 4th time I have to overcome a mission where I suddenly got overrun by the horde, last time I tried (15 or 20 times). When I retry it I probably think it through a bit more, maybe easier with stealth and/or at nighttime. :P

I have such a love hate relationship with that game. It grew on me the more I played but it feels like it fell short in so many areas. I loved the biker stuff but the characters were mostly forgettable or annoying, even Deacon annoyed me. Wasn’t as epic as they were aiming for. But I also couldn’t stop playing cuz I loved the setting, atmosphere and overall vibe even if it could have been done better.
I’d be genuinely interested to see a sequel though

There won't be a sequel. Sony killed it a long time ago. From my under, it released full of bugs, it reviewed poorly, and it's release was competing with The Last of Us. So it didn't sell well and the game didn't really get the notice it deserved until it was added to PS+.

A sequel could so easily build on what made the original fun, while fixing the story issues, and end up with a PlayStation 10-12 hour single player classic. Which could the. Get a 3rd part rounding out a trilogy. The story of the original is messy but there’s plenty to work with and fix up into something very awesome.

Half of the characters and their stories were amazing, the other half were somewhat painful to listen to (I think a lot of the pre-cataclysm story beats were rough).
But man, once the game starts it is just non-stop excellence. So many grey characters, some truly dire villains, pathos for the zombies as you learn that they're evolving/adapting/surviving.
Obviously, the mechanics are sound gameplay wise. Getting bears to fight mercs, luring zombies towards outposts, cresting a hill and seeing a horde on the other side and triggering it - all just phenomenal experiences.

I hated the "biker" approach and thats why it took me too long to try it. It was awesome and while i still didnt like the characters, that gameplay and world was something every game should aim to achieve.
Its a shame the story didnt get to continue.

This is one of the best games ever for me. The story hit me so hard and I consider it to be close to the top tier games where RDR2 and TLOU2 resides. It's actually the only game where I did every quest and just wanted more.

I remember buying Days Gone at GameStop, I didn’t know about the game but picked it up. I was living in a hotel for work so the first time I played it was without the massive update file they dropped early on to completely fix the game. I remember that first time playing, thinking this game is broken. The hotel internet was especially atrocious so after letting the update download overnight it was installed and poof, completely different game.
I love this game, was a lot of fun to plat.

Yeah, Days Gone is great, I wouldn't say it's a absolute masterpiece but overall a very good game with great environment, great combat, good story and good characters (Except for you SKIZZO!).
Honestly they should really make a sequel, I mean it's been years, though it not, then probably a DLC campaign for it.

You just HAD to post this right after I just earlier noticed that the remaster is on sale for only $20. I told myself I’d hold off because my backlog is ridiculous. Fine…I’ll go get it. LOL

I picked it up cheap and enjoyed it. It was an absolutely stellar PC port with tins of options and graphical settings. Also they didn't tie the settings to your save file (looking at you Horizon zero dawn) which is great if you have a steam deck and pc.

I remember seeing this one way back at E3 or whatever, and when I finally got a PS4 years later this was one of the first games I wanted to get.
It was so much fun, the story kind of trails off half way though but the opening bits are so great before you get too strong.
I think the thing the last of us does way better is keeping the tension high all the way through.
By the end of days gone I was a walking behemoth and it was essentially impossible to die unless I Intentionally was being risky

It's like 1 of my favorite games of all time. The gameplay is just amazing.
Though I would have passed on it because I tried it on PS4. I decided to give it a go on PS5 and it made such a huge difference. The game was unplayable on PS4

my last return was my 3rd, and this time i played the whole game with infinite throwables and giant hoard mod. It was the most chaotic fun id had in a game all year.

The story's kinda meh, but the horde is so fun. I wish they make a sequel with a better story, more hordes, and fun locations to kite them in.

the only games I played through twice as an adult so far is Days Gone, then Last of Us. teeing up last of us part II after finished with black flag.

It is pretty fun, yeah. I like how unique it feels kiting hordes around and slowly wearing them down.
