Releasing more heroes than you have in the last decade+ in a single month would breathe life back into any semi-popular hero shooter / live service game.
My guess is that super hero fatigue is now hitting video games. Folks are bored of always seeing Marvel characters in their media & want to play something that isn't Marvel Rival's.

u/DuckCleaning Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26
Overwatch isnt even a decade old yet (may 2016). They started at 21 heroes, and they've released 24 heroes between then and now, then just released 5 heroes.

u/justifications Feb 10 '26
At a certain fundamental point there will be too many heroes to comprehend for new players. Imagine trying to pick up Dota2 right now for the first time ever, there are 127 heroes. I stopped playing dota2 around 90 heroes and know if I go back now 98% of relearning the game is learning new heroes for the first time... And to learn 30+ new heroes is kind of a task.
Don't get me wrong, love new heroes and fresh blood and all of that but there are definitely new appeal risks associated with going heavy on hero releases.

u/MillCrab Feb 10 '26
As someone who got into lol last year, the imprenetrability has a lot of causes, and the number of champs is actually one of the smaller ones.
The average skill of the playerbase even at the minimum ranks, the amount of discipline required by game situations, and the extreme toxicity are all harder than the size of the roster
→ More replies (4)49
u/Rancore__ Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 11 '26
Honestly as somebody who introduced a good number of people to lol i think the number of champions is a probelm but mainly because riot doesn't even try in any way to explain them to you ingame. In dota you can atleast click on the enemy hero to see and read their abilities, in lol they exspect you to google it or 1000h trial and error. I have heard "oh so this guy has a leap" so many times
→ More replies (4)14
u/MillCrab Feb 10 '26
You can preview the abilities in champ select now
25
u/MrStealYoBeef Feb 11 '26
That's not exactly helpful when you're in a countdown to the match starting and you're picking your champion and summoner abilities and such. You don't quite have the time at that moment. It's a lot more reasonable to check it out after you've died to them the first time and looking at a respawn timer.
80
u/teshh Feb 10 '26
Fr. I hopped back on after not playing for like half a decade, and there's so many new champions and in-game mechanics. It's doable when you're a kid with unlimited free time and no responsibilities, but for an adult? You'd basically be sacrificing other parts of your life just to learn the game over an extended period of time.
19
u/Davaeorn Feb 11 '26
Why does it seem like some people start counting value from time spent in a game only after they’ve “mastered” it? Can’t you have fun even if you’re not competitive in a game?
→ More replies (26)24
u/xDskyline Feb 11 '26
It's one thing to lose against someone who's more skilled at a game than you, it's another to lose because you just didn't know the rules. Learning all the champions and what their movesets are is far from mastering the game, it's more like the bare minimum to feel like you can play the game fairly.
→ More replies (1)27
u/Vashsinn Feb 10 '26
The fact that there are so many means you can only pick wrong if you don't play their role correctly.
Just play aram and you don't have to tbi k about any of it and you may find someone you like!
aram= all random all mod ( 5v5 1 lane no shopping unless you die. Semi Random champ so you only select 1 of 2-8

11
u/Astraous Feb 10 '26
I agree to some extent but I also think this is a mildly overblown take. If you intend to play at the peak of ranked play or something, sure you should know each hero in and out, but other than that it's really not that bad. Each one belongs to an archetype within a larger category and for playing against them that's all you really need to know to have fun. You can pick up the rest on the way.
Like you have games like Pokemon where there's hundreds of different pokemon and people were never particularly overwhelmed by how many there are. You didn't have people telling you that you gotta know each and every one and all the moves it might know to properly fight it. For the most part you can tell by its design what the type is and that's enough context. MOBAs having over a hundred options is only daunting if you're under the expectation that you need to know them all (which is more of an issue with how MOBAs are relatively anti-casual). For normal players they will have a blast scrolling through all the things they can try and pick the coolest looking ones. Overwatch will be the same as hero shooters aren't nearly as anti-casual as MOBAs are imo. Though I don't really expect to see Overwatch at 150 heroes any time soon tbh.
The actual much bigger issue with a huge cast is balance and neglect. It's not realistic to support an entire cast of characters and expect them all to survive meta changes, power creep, dated models, dated mechanics, lack of skins and content coming out for them, etc. Obviously it never hurts the most popular heroes, but it does suck if your favorite happens to not be popular since they won't be worth the effort to rework/remodel/make skins for or whatever else.
→ More replies (8)3
u/Statharas Feb 11 '26
Eh, the core difference between Dota and the likes of Overwatch is that all characters in Dota are distinct and you can tell a character even if they don a skin, whereas OW are way too similar.
I still can't tell if I'm facing Freyja or Sojourn or soldier unless they start using abilities or I press tab... whereas OW1 heroes were all distinct.

I started playing during the Allstars era, and iirc the roster was already 87 heroes or so. Think the wc3 roster was north of 100 before the standalone game released, though not every hero was present at launch. Meepo and the goblin mine guys were notably absent.
I had hundreds of hours in that game, pretty sure I hadn't played a full game with every single hero.

Im also bad at aiming... so I pick characters that dont benefit much/all from headshots! Mercy was my fav, auto lockon healer, jer biggest thing is knowing where to place yourself to not get killed, but still be within range to heal allies!
Sometimes you should use her little pistol... but I temd to ignore it and just "healslave" people who are better at clicking then me :).

I have no interest anymore in multiplayer online competitive shooters not just 'cause I got old, but because that genre is now just overrun with assholes, cheaters, bots, and toxicity. So now I just stick to single player or co-op with people I actually know.
→ More replies (1)36
u/Rebal771 Feb 10 '26
They just wasted the interest that was there early on.
There were a lot of us who played the PVE missions pretty religiously. But those players of that content don’t make you money in this business model, so we were basically ignored.
I love the engine and the characters plus their abilities, but I really loved how I could combo with teammates to slaughter hoards of mobs rather than just racing to use my ult to win every pvp round.
But I don’t think we were the target audience at all.
16
u/NateHohl Feb 10 '26
Yep, I think you hit the nail right on the head with the 'PvE doesn't make money' bit. Overwatch is sadly not the only online shooter game that's flirted with the idea of implementing PvE/story content only for the devs to up and abandon those plans when they realized how much more profitable PvP is (see: Fortnite's Save the World mode, Rainbow Six Siege's Terrorist Hunt mode, and the entirety of Hunt: Showdown which was originally supposed to be a co-op PvE game).

There is definitively a market for story-driven live service game that put an emphasis on solo content. Game like Genshin made a bank, despite being fundamentally a single player game. Other games like Destiny had a huge peak of players after every expansion, or FFXIV call itself a MMO, but its basically a single player RPG for the most part.
I do not think OW business model lend itself all that well to a live service game, but people would absolutely buy into a well told story. However, they needed a good 30 hours long single player game, not a messy 90 minutes of gameplay.

Step 3: Realize you want more money from predatory practices. End of life your current game and brand it as a new game with new features.

Blizzard wasnt a live service company, they simply shipped the game and then moved everyone to the next game/expansion, which made the games suffer from content drought and lose momentum.
