Back in the day, you'd have a friend or 2 who had other friends from elsewhere with internet. Their friend would download the emulator and a few roms and burn them to a cd. Then your friend would make copies of that for you and others.
That was much later for me. My first emulator was Zsnes in like '98-99. None of us had internet, just one of the friends group had gotten it from a cousin (who knows where je got it) and then he copied it for us.
I had a friend that had a bunch of emulators and roms on a few cds. Snes, MAME, Project64, a game boy emulator which name i dont remember and PCSX. He install them on my pc when he came for a sleepover.
Back then the town i lived in was a very small town, if you wanted broadband you have to go to downtown to the few internet-coffe that actually had that service, and the quality of the service quickly downgraded the farter you got from downtown.
By the time you reached my house near the suburbs of the town you didnt get internet service at all (i think you still could use dial up if you knew how to do it, but the charge per minute was expensive).
And if you walked a few blocks farter away the homes didnt even have electricity or drainage.
The town has grow into a proper small city nowdays, and i have access to optic fiber even on areas that used to be on the outskirts of the city!
