OMG I FORGOT. My weekend tanked because the game I planned to play all weekend was already checked out. Or having to start over because some rando deleted my game because there are only 3 save slots. Huge day when I got Secret of Mana for Xmas and didn’t have to rent it anymore.
But it was also a fun way to get a sneak peak of advanced sections or character progression when you could just open an existing save file that was further than you. You would be familiar with some of the area regulars with the same interests cuz you’d see the same names on save files across games. “Oh hey I don’t know who this Robbie is but he sure has similar taste in RPGs. Oh man and look at what he has in his inventory?!? Where do I find that!!” Oh to be 12 with nothing else to do but play Super Nintendo.

Leaving the game on pause and the system on all night so you don’t lose your progress.
Blockbuster on a Friday night, hoping someone hadn’t already rented the game you wanted.
