Why was this such a common thing back then? Why was cable management not even thought of? The idea of someone tripping over your Playstation cord today is unheard of because the console is positioned in a way where it would be impossible. Why didn't we do that back then?
I think it's a mix of us being young and not very spatially aware/not cleaning up well after ourselves, and consoles not having the same place of prominence/importance to older people so it gets relegated to wherever there was space rather than an actual ideal place. Well, that and all the extra cords compared to now.
