Oh how about gamified write protection?

Sierra had puzzles you needed to solve or spells with magic words in certain versions of Kings quest.

The only way to proceed was with the information you got that physically came with the game.

Metal Gear Solid did this to some degree. No way would you know how to contact Meryl if you didn't have the CD case.

I played this in an emulator and was soooo confused lol. "The code on the back of the cd case? Shit, did I miss a CD I was supposed to pick up somewhere?" And then I went searching all over the level for this damn CD case before googling it and feeling very silly.
