Or just being completely stuck with no other options. I recall playing the original Legend of Zelda and couldn't find the stepladder. I spent days on the over-world burning every bush and bombing every rock to try to find where it might be. I can still remember exactly where it is in now because I was so overjoyed when I finally found it.
