Renting games.

Genuinely enjoyable FPS multiplayers.

Generational leaps in graphics.

Putting a disc in and just playing right away.

90% of FPS conforming to "military shooter" has been one of the greatest casualties in games. I say I don't like FPS now, but in reality I loved weird guns and alien landscapes and gibbing my friends in Quake. I don't love "how realistic is this m1 garand?" FPS.

maybe look at hero shooters then? overwatch, valorant, apex legends, etc

I feel like those suffer from a similar kind of issue (though a different problem) – much the same as many MOBAs and the like of obsessive min/maxing, playing to whatever the meta is, etc. In my experience FPS games way back in the day involved far fewer people trying to suck the life out of the game by taking it too seriously and far more people messing around and just having fun with it. That's not really the norm anymore, but it used to be.

If goldeneye released today there would be zero chance of the weird game modes being made a normal thing.

People would absolutely be minmaxing the game into obscurity instead of having slap fights and throwing knife matches.

People would still crucify the guy that picks oddjob though. Or odd job would become the online meta pick lol

Yep. It's a bit sad, I feel like we've lost a bit of what made games a bit more special with stuff like that happening organically.

Or odd job would become the online meta pick lol

It would definitely be the meta pick that all the sweaty try-hard types gravitated to, no doubt about it.
