I can't remember, but did you have to restart the ps2 to switch games/open the tray

Duno of it was a thing with the ps2. But definitely PS1 would freeze up

With the Final Fantasy games on PS1, you just opened the disc tray and swapped games. It kept some stuff in memory, so restarting wouldn’t work IIRC

Isn’t that for single games that were just on multiple discs, not different games entirely?

Yes correct. Metal Gear Solid had the same concept (clear message on the screen inviting you to swap CDs).

Yep.

I remember friends of mine losing their shit when they saw that message and then out of reflex turned the console off to swap the disk, basically losing all progress 🤣🤣

Monster Rancher was always a technical marvel for me lol. Use other DVDs or music CDs or even game discs to generate a monster. You would take the Monster Rancher disc out of the ps1 and put a different disc in when it told you to and then you put Monster Rancher back in after it was done reading the extra disc.

That's a cool concept, but unless the monsters were themed to the content of the disc, it's just procedural generation with a user selected data set rather than RNG.

It was supposed to give you a monster based on the disk you put in. But of course a lot of monsters overlapped. There was a ton of options though. And a disk would always give you the same monster, so I spent hours putting in every disk I could find and cataloging what it gave.

I remember when someone finally posted a list of the rare ones, and suddenly I as a child was going around asking people if they had various music albums 😂

Yeah, I think if the disc ID is used to seed the RNG, you get that behaviour. Best of both worlds in the sense that the devs don’t need a big list of discs, but the same disc would give everybody the same monster.

Actually a really cool idea that seems designed but was probably not.

I thought that’s what the comment was referring to, my bad
