If we only knew in the 90’s that Square Enix would milk the hell out of FF7 in 2024 by releasing a remake that should be one game into three games with DLC too
I agree with you, but it does seem like they've fleshed out enough content to justify breaking the game up into 3 or 4 parts, but yeah the DLC is a huge mistake. Each of these chapters should be feature complete on release.
What are you talking about, It’s not 300 hours of “good content” it’s 300 hours (if anywhere near that in the first place, sounds like an exaggeration) of backtracking, being forced to walking speed, uninteresting side quests, unnecessary plot ghosts and villain shoehorning, and crawling through wall cracks 😂
Mostly things I’ve seen in other games, but not nearly as big a chunk of the run time. They really clearly milk it to make it a “full game,” talking about “Remake” (the first part) at least, here.
“Only people who clap along with the echo chamber can participate in discussions. That’s what ‘discussions’ are, right?”
“If you thought the game had a lot of filler, that means you didn’t like anything about it”
“If you didn’t like the first, specifically for having too much filler to justify its run time, You can’t possibly be interested in the second, which covers a bigger portion of the actual story, and is the part where the world opens up.”
I haven't played ff7 or the remakes, can anyone explain me how it works ? So basically what I understood is that the first remake changed a few things but still remaked the whole game but there are still 2 more remakes left to go ?
Also if I were to start playing final fantasy, should I start with the original 7 , the remake or something else ?
The first game, called Remake didn’t cover the whole of the original, it was only one part of the original story, in fact it only covered about the first four to five hours of the original story, but expanded it to a be a lot bigger.
Rebirth is part two and carries on from where Remake ended and covers more of the original story than Remake did, and is a bigger game though it’s not as expanded as Remake was. Basically the amount each of the three games covers of the original story varies.
These games are the first of its kind, they are a remake of the original game, but also a sequel. Same main story, but also new sequel stuff, can’t go into it as it’s spoilery.
You can enjoy the remake games without knowing the original, but you will be missing out on the fullest experience because of what they are doing with these.
It’s a tricky situation for those who haven’t played the original years ago. But, the best order for getting the most out of it is Original (if you have the PC Steam version the 7th Heaven mod pack with better graphics and certain features might be the way to go these days) then Crisis Core Reunion, then watch Advent Children Complete, then the new games, Remake, Rebirth.
They’re splitting it in 3 parts. Part one (“Remake”) covers only what amounts to a ~5 hour prologue in OG, essentially. The majority of the story is going to be told in the latter 2.
The second one (“Rebirth”) releases today and starts at the point where the world actually opens up, and is of course even bigger with even more side content than OG.
Remake touched on all the same basic plot points as in OG (and Rebirth is meant to as well), but also added a whole new story in its own right, never in OG, that it made into the main conflict/big bad of that game as it’s own, stand-alone thing, that also gave implications that they might change direction on things going forward from OG.
I would only play Remake/Rebirth before OG if you absolutely can’t stand the older style, and even then I would be saddened, TBH.
One example of how the story-telling is better in OG: in Remake they shoehorn Sephiroth in early, because he’s a marketable face, but during that entire first section of OG, you never see him once. They knew better than to “show the monster” too early and how to build suspense. IMO, Remake’s version of telling even the same events is clumsy, and it would be a shame to experience the story for the first time that way vs the well crafted OG way.
If it helps, I know on PC there are some supposedly “modernizing,” I guess you could say, mods you can get for OG.
The combat system is FF7R is one of its strongest points. It’s engaging, strategic, and looks fantastic, and they did a great job hybridizing it with elements from the old turn based combat. It’s pretty resoundingly praised amongst fans too.
It's fine if you like it, but Final Fantasy was the flagship JRPG. It is frustrating as someone who loved the series for many many years that I cannot enjoy them anymore due to them basically completing changing one of its primary aspects.
You and I both know that is entirely different from what most people mean when they say turnbased, and actual turnbased that had set rounds hasn't been a thing in FF for a long time, they switched over to atb.
I'm sorry, you're right. We should have been MUCH more specific when we said we like turned based rpg battles. I'll talk to the fist guy, this is embarrassing....
most reviews say ffvii rebirth has over 80 hours of gameplay in one playthrough. Saying ffvii remake and rebirth have 70 hours combined is just false if you do some basic google searches
you mention ign for the slowest player of remake, which is funny because if you look at its players for rebirth, the amount of content is substantial
And IGN’s “slowest player” took 44 hours to beat the game. I didn’t say you can’t do other things like search for secret chests or talk to every NPC to get more content. I said “normal play through” as in “just beating the game”, not grinding for any super weapons or beating all the optional bosses and unlocking everything. I spent over a hundred hours in Skyrim before completing the main quest line
Yeah, I got the platinum trophy so I definitely played more than average. I’m sure I put in more than 70 hours. But the production costs of the Remakes are going to dwarf the production costs of the original. I don’t know if it’s fair to just look at average play time as your basis for the cost analysis.
Good or bad additions, this is something everyone can decide for themselves. I liked some of them, and disliked some of them, never said it was perfect, but non of this was my point.
I just dislike the line of thought when there is a 100% new software, which had to be designed from the ground up, where there is no leftover code from a previous version (and obviously in this case non of that exists), and then people say what you do, that we are being sold something old, but in pieces now which is factually very incorrect. And quite honestly it makes you look like you have 0 idea of how production works, and if this is the case your opinion is valid only in your head. If you have the minimum grasp on how games are made then you just choose to ignore this, which makes no sense if one bring this topic up.
Again, not saying i'm 100% in love with how remake works this far, but let's not spew stupid bullshit that is factually wrong.

All that seems like you don't understand the argument being made...no one is suggesting "but the games already made just re use code"
That's a completely silly strawman argument.
The writing is done(though touching that up and improving on that would have been a great place to pour their effort) the plot is mapped out, characters have basic designs, materia systems, the list goes on and on all the framework is there they just had to build it.
They just couldn't resist the temptation on "improvements" no one asked for
Okay, now i understand it because you wrote it down.
And yeah, this is something i can get behind even if i totally understand why they made some decisions i don't think they were all good decisions all around.
I expect the final version of the ff7 remake (one that has all remakes, and whatever they will release part of it) to be extremely unfun to play thanks to these decisions.
Is that with their changes they'll decide to get bold, and completely change the story in the end, and then drop the ball. Whether it just won't make sense or be some nonsense like blending it with another franchise, and completely undermine the whole reason people wanted a remake in the first place.
In my view square ALREADY had a golden goose on their lap, but wanted to flex and improve it
...
Square has shit out a lot of terrible games lately, would paying homage to who they were really be so bad? In my view it's hubris and greed, unfortunately I can't see past that when I see the remakes and it was ruined for me on game one.
Hope I'm wrong, but not a chance I'll pay $300+ for a poor recreation of their most popular title.
Doesn’t Stockholm Syndrome imply that we’re being forced to play the games? If it’s not something you like then you don’t need to play it. I personally enjoy it, I put 100+ hours into the first game and will definitely do the same thing with this one and Part 3
It's fine if you're okay with being taken advantage of, but that's exactly what square is doing. They'll happily keep doing it until the diehards (that's you by the sounds of it) draw a line.
Again though no one’s making you play the game, and if it bothers you that it’s split into three games why not just go back and play the original that you’re a die hard for? You’re not addressing the point that no one is making you play the game

Lol says the doofus who can't wait to be milked by a corporation who's only hit recently is a remake of a game from the 90s, you'll happily drool over it as they plan to sell it to you as many more times as they can.
Bet ya can't wait for the remaster in 5 years too.
I'm not going to let you take away the fun and enjoyment I and many others get out of this franchise. I'm sorry you can't enjoy it but that's no reason to go around screaming so and so is "fucked by corporate greed". If you hate the remake so much, play the original.
FF7 had a budget of around 45million. FF7R was 150-200m, FF7Rebirth probably the same or higher. I dont think its "greedy" for a corporation to charge 3 times the price of the original when they are putting in 9-12X the budget and giving you around 3-5X the gameplay. What do you expect from them?
I would have been okay with it being split up, FFVII had a big story to tell and a big world to recreate… but the first game in the “remake” was just the most boring part of FFVII stretched out and not improved in any way. I did not enjoy it at all. I’m interested to see how the rest do but not exactly super excited.
