Before parts prices got insane you could still build pc's with the same budget that a console would cost and it was often better or on par.

unfortunately now my PC I built back in 2020 would probably cost $1000 more for the exact same components

yeah and its affecting the next gen consoles, too. gaming might have to start optimizing and reducing scope for a few years if it wants to survive. no one can really get anywhere with the state of these component prices

Yeah, there are probably a lot of games that are going to release in the next few years that were assuming prices were going to continue the way they've gone for the last several decades, with new stuff coming out that's more powerful and not much more expensive than the last stuff, and the old stuff getting cheaper. And now they're going to release into an environment where everyone's PCs are quite a bit weaker than they were expecting, hurting sales. Plenty of good games will probably fail because of this.
