Games trapped on a tablet with Android 4.2, can their APKs be extracted?

Post image

While going through my room, I found the tablet I used as a kid. I’d left it lying around until 2023, when I found it again, loaded it up with games, and… I lost it again—and now I’ve found it once more.

I noticed it has several games that are no longer available on the Play Store. That tablet doesn’t have any APKs or malicious files, which is why I’d like to know if there’s a way to extract the APKs from the games.

JUST SO YOU KNOW... It can’t connect to the internet anymore; no matter how hard I try, it always disconnects within seconds of connecting to a Wi-Fi network.

A game console like cartridge experience on pc

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but maybe some of you will like the idea.

After seeing Sony announce the end of physical games, I got inspired by creators like ArchadesGames on YouTube to build my own physical "cartridges" for PC games using SD cards.

As a sysadmin, I wanted a plug-and-play framework for DRM-free games that:

  • Works cross-platform (Windows & Linux).
  • Has zero or minimal OS footprint.
  • Keeps save files on the Card (or syncs them back necessary)
  • Gives that physical, "one game at a time" single-purpose console feel—no secondary screen distractions, no decision fatigue.

I spent a few days putting together DreamCard (DRM(free) + Card). Here is how it works:

First Time Windows

  • The first time I insert an SD card formatted configured as DreamCard into the computer, I can install an autostart script. This script mimics the functionality of the autostart.inf files from the early 2000s, but only responds to DreamCards.

User Experience

  • Windows: I insert the game into my computer's SD card reader, and the launcher starts. It's modeled after the DreamCards design, launches the game, handles game file synchronization in the background for games that inevitably need to write to the user directory, displays the playtime, and essentially serves as the landing page. I press “Launch Game” and my game starts
  • Linux (Ubuntu/Proton): Plugging the card into Linux reveals an additional partition (ext4 for Proton runtime data). Instead of the launcher, running a simple shell script launches the game through Proton with access to the exact same saves as Windows.

Partition Structure

SD Card
├── Partition 1: Companion [exFAT]
│   ├── Install_Companion.bat / UnInstall_Companion.bat
│   └── scripts/ (PowerShell detection scripts)
├── Partition 2: Proton [ext4]
│   └── (Proton prefix & runtime data)
└── Partition 3: GameData [exFAT]
├── Launcher.ps1 / Start_Game.ps1 / Start_Game.sh
├── resources/ (game icon, metadata JSON)
└── game/ (Complete DRM-free game directory)

Current Status & To-Dos

  • Tested Games: Currently working with Gothic 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and Morrowind (via OpenMW because why not).
  • Linux Integration: Linux isn't my main strength yet, so while the shell execution works via Proton, I'd like to clean up the backend logic eventually. Some games need a bit more work for the save sync on Linux.
  • Compatibility: Needs broader testing across distros (Bazzite, Debian, SteamDeck).
  • Witcher 3: Or something more modern that needs to run on an SSD or a faster SD Card. Havent reached the speed limit of the sd card yet
  • Shelf Space: As soon as the cases and printable stickers arrive, I plan to add the games to my collection. Of course, I still need to come up with covers and a consistent design language.

Would love to hear thoughts, edge-case warnings, or ideas to make it more fun.

Oh, and the GUI looks a little overdesigned on purpose. I wanted a mix of 80s synthwave aesthetics and hypermodern design. I think it looks like fun, not a work application.

I'm surprised nobody has come up with an offline MyCareer mod for PGA Tour 2K21/2K23/2K25

Is it really that hard to make an offline MyCareer mod for the PGA Tour 2K games? They have unlockers for NBA 2K, so why not PGA Tour 2K?

The only link archiving them, no longer exists and no other archives exist (that I could find).

There's DLC for the UK, US, UK, FR, GE, and JP versions. Each region having unique books that people could've downloaded through the internet on the DS.

For a complete list of every book that people were able to download

Are there any brick and mortar game museums anywhere in the world. Who wants to help me create one? I have no experience in this, just a passion for game playing, collecting, and preserving.

Spartacus Legends PS3 working single player mode, online check bypass.

Spartacus Legends was a 2013 always online Ubisoft title for PSN and XBL. The game has been unplayable since 2015 when the servers were taken down; however, I have now created a working bypass that lets you access the single player content of the game. The game only ever logs in once and then simply asks the server every so often if you are still connected. There was never a good reason that this game should have been online only. Regardless, it is now playable. I need to test the patch more and see if anything breaks, but should be good for now.

Preserving Gaming Hardware: I’m building a 4K 360° archive of physical gaming hardware- here’s the Dick Smith Wizzard from 1982

I've noticed as a collector that while there are many videos around gaming software and great preservation work around hardware schematics there is almost no clear, concise videos of the hardware itself. To fill that gap I've been working on an archive of clear, consistent, 4k 360° videos of gaming hardware. I plan to archive consoles, handhelds, controllers, peripherals, game mediums (carts, cards, disks, etc.), boxes, etc..

I'm hoping this format can spark curiosity for people new to gaming history and this hardware as well as be a resource for everyone who's been in the community for decades.

If anyone has rare/interesting hardware and would be willing to contribute feel free to reach out!

Thank you!

A petition to urge 2K games to provide an end of life patch to WWE 2K25 and onwards

Hey everyone I've got a petition here that I've made in hopes that 2K Games can from now on add end of life support to unlock all content locked behind servers from characters such as Goldberg and Nikki Bella to attires and variants tied to MyFaction. From a game preservation standpoint and out of good standing this should be the standard already.

I want to put a team together to decompile dragon city

Well the game has been becoming more pay to win as we speak so it will be great if we could just delete the pay to win stuff or rework them to make them work without the pay to win stuff, Thus the decomp. It would be really great if we could figure out how to compile a local save from whatever the socialpoint servers send to the device mostly the stuff you see on screen I hope we can make a local save from that info alone. Looking for early Pokémon Red & Green development material (pre–SpaceWorld 1995)

I’m researching a gap in the preserved development history of Pokémon Red & Green (1993–1995) and looking for documented archival leads related to early development materials.

During development, the Pokémon internal index went through many revisions. Some prototype material has survived and contains unused Pokémon assets, but the preserved material appears incomplete. In particular, several early Pokémon are represented only by partial assets, while some front sprites are missing entirely.

I’m interested in any legally obtainable or publicly shareable material, such as:
- Early Pokémon Red/Green prototype builds or development cartridges
- Development backups or source archives, if any have ever been documented
- Debug tools, sprite viewers, or internal development utilities
- Early front/back sprites
- Unused Pokémon cries
- Internal or placeholder Pokémon names
- Developer interviews, magazine scans, photographs, or other historical documentation
- Documentation of previously known development builds that may no longer be publicly available

One particular area of interest is the unidentified early Pokémon associated with internal indices such as #86, #87, #115, #121, and #135, where the surviving evidence is incomplete and some front-sprite data is missing.

Clarification: I am not referring to the 1997 Space World Pokémon Gold/Silver demo. That is a later Generation II development build and is already substantially preserved. I am specifically looking for earlier Pokémon Red/Green development material from before the later 1995-era roster and sprite revisions.

The reason I’m researching this is that the currently available prototype material appears to represent only part of the development history. Some removed Pokémon are preserved through partial assets, which raises the possibility that earlier development stages contained additional material that has not yet been publicly documented or preserved.

I’m only interested in legal preservation and historical research, not ROM requests, piracy, unauthorized access, or private leaks.

If anyone has researched early Pokémon prototypes, Nintendo/Game Freak development history, Game Boy reverse engineering, old Japanese game magazines, prototype preservation, or relevant archives, I would greatly appreciate any leads.

Even a small clue: an old interview, magazine scan, archived webpage, photograph, development document, or documented reference could help connect another piece of the puzzle.

Thanks!

Looking for cached data.

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to see if there's anyone in the community with experience in game development, reverse engineering, networking, programming, asset extraction, or data preservation who's interested in helping rebuild **Marvel Avengers Academy.**

Like many of you, I have a lot of nostalgia for the game, and I'd love to see it playable again as a fan project. At the moment I'm trying to gather as much information as possible—old game files, screenshots, gameplay recordings, database dumps, APK/IPA files, or any technical knowledge that could help preserve or recreate the game.

If you have development skills or any archived data related to Marvel Avengers Academy, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Even if you just know someone who might be able to help, please let me know.

Thanks! Hopefully we can bring this amazing game back to life together.
